[APP] GrooVe IP - Google Voice VoIP

I love this app, but lately I've noticed I keep missing calls because by the time my ringtone starts going off, the person calling in is already being sent to voice mail. I can have my phone in my hand, hear the first buzz, and look down in time to see the missed call indicator. This happens on a strong Wifi signal, not sure if it happens on 3G. Are there settings I missed (or messed up) or is this because I use custom ringtones? Running on Optimus V, stock rooted.

Hi brother,

See my post here.

You can't adjust the number of rings in GV, so if your phone's WiFi is asleep and misses the call, you don't know you even got a call until GV alerts you of a missed call.

The solution of always keeping WiFi on works, but it's less than desirable for battery life reasons. AFAIK, that's the only way to avoid missing incoming calls.

I don't think that's my issue, I have it set to keep WiFi on always due to some other issue a few months ago. I don't worry too much about battery life! The last time it happened I was browsing the web, so I know the WiFi was active. I tried calling it from another handset, heard it "ring" at that end something like six times before my handset even responded. Could something in my network be causing this delay?

What phone do you have? What OS?

Did you try calling your phone with the phone awake and the sitting at the home screen? What happened? Install Advanced WiFi Lock and try calling your phone again when it's locked.

Optimus V, stock (2.2.1) rooted. I did a quick test with Advanced WiFi Lock, and that seems to have resolved it. Odd, seeing as it's happened before while I know the connection was active. I've seen stranger things happen though...
I'll be testing tonight with a variety of handsets calling in on different networks and post back my results.

I wanted to say that I just got back from a week in Mexico and used GrooVeIP on my Galaxy 10.1 tablet. My hotel had free WiFi. I used it to call my kids every evening and talked for at least 30 minutes every time (once for over an hour). I paired my Bluetooth headset with the tablet, and it worked brilliantly. The connection was solid, and the kids said the sound quality was better than when I would call on my cellphone.

I travel to Mexico at least monthly and my cell bill was getting a little out of hand. This was easily the best $4.99 investment I've ever made. Paid for itself in less than 10 minutes.

Have a new version of GrooVe IP that adds a troubleshooting setting that should do the same thing that Advanced WiFi Lock does. So in the next version should be able to just enable that setting to get the same results.

Yup. Your High Perf WiFi Lock setting fixed this same issue for me. :)

That's cool. That lock isn't available on every device, we found on some devices the partial wake lock fixes the incoming calls not ringing right away issue. That's what the Advanced Wifi Lock app does. So added a new checkbox to get the partial wake lock.

Issue is that Google Voice will only forward the call to one sign in to Google Talk. In earlier versions GrooVe IP signed in at a lower priority so calls were always going to gmail. Newer versions GrooVe IP has a higher priority so calls should come to the app. I think it would be difficult to add a toggle, plus you'd have to restart the app anytime you changed the toggle. Will look into it.

I think an easy way to do it is to have an option in the setting that chooses the priority between gmail and GrooVe IP (restart required). If I choose gmail priority, it will run like the older version. If I choose GrooVe IP priority, it will run like the newer version. Does that sound feasible? Thanks.

It is likely feasible. It takes a few minutes for changes to process on Google's side. It won't be a trivial change so I would not expect it to happen soon. I have added it to the list.

What you could do is forward calls to both your mobile number and to google chat in your google voice account. When you get an incoming call GrooVe IP and your regular phone will ring, GrooVe IP should show up on top if you are on WiFi. If you wanted to answer from your native phone, you could press the home button to get back to the native incoming call screen.

GrooVeIP does not show on top in this scenario. Groove IP starts ringing first and then native phone starts ringing. There is no way of getting back to groove ip and answering the call through it? Is there a setting to bring Groove IP to the top?

Good Morning,

Thank you so much for your time and effort making this app and supporting it. I have installed it on my daughters optimus v running on virgin mobile and it has been great. Recently though, it is only running when she is on wifi and not off her 3g data. When she's not on wifi, the icon goes red and she can't do anything. I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I haven't been able to figure it out (I'm new to android and to the forums). Thank you in advance for your help and keep up the good work!

Make sure the allow 3G/4g calling checkbox is checked. What happens if you open the app when you are on 3G? The login screen should try to login and if it can't it would return an error.

Are you on WiFi? Does your provider support voice and data at the same time? If you lose your data connection when making voice calls and you aren't on WiFi the app will be signed out when the native system starts ringing and the GrooVe IP screen will not come back on top.

I am on Wifi and my phone is GSM (T-mobile vibrant). I dont have a data plan, so my 3g traffic is blocked. However the phone still overrides the grooveip connection.

Any ideas on how to solve this issue???

I got my daughters problem fixed (somehow data got turned off) and decided to install groove ip on my Samsung Replenish. It looks like the sound coming out of the speaker and not the earpiece is a Sumsung issue with grooveip. Any thoughts on troubleshooting this with the Replenish? Thank you in advance for you time.

Hi,

These are generally the troubleshooting steps if voice is coming out of the speaker not the earpiece:

- Enable just the Audio Routing checkbox in the Troubleshooting section.
- If that does not work, disable Audio Routing and enable Audio Processing
- If that doesn't work, leave Audio Processing checked and also check Audio Mode Fallback

If none of the above works you can also repeat the above with the Wifi Tablet checkbox enabled.

I'm using a xoom and my wife mentions that there is a delay when she answers before I can hear her. sometimes as much as 5 seconds.

After that then the delay is much less (still longer than a land line, but I'm not expecting miracles here, and definitely tolerable :) I'm not sure if this is a problem with the app or just a problem of routing calls through google chat.

Also one request is when using a Bluetooth when you are on a call, or the phone is ringing have pressing the button on the Bluetooth either answer the call or hang up instead of enable/disable Bluetooth.

thanks for your great app!

Sorry, I realized I said the problem wrong. When someone on the other line answers and says hello, I don't hear it until the second or third hello, the first few seconds (sometimes up to 5 seconds) are dropped and then the call is connected and everything works fine.

this is on a motorola xoom.

What kind of network is it? Have you tried any other networks?

by network I assume you mean, 3g or WiFi? I've tried it on several different networks in that regard 3g and WiFi at serveral different places including different ISPs. Does that answer your question?

additional info (sorry it's spaced out but as I re-read it it seems like I'm missing important details)
The other party will answer and say hello a few times, but on my end it acts like the phone is ringing when after a few seconds to me it sounds like someone just picked up. When I receive calls I don't seem to have this problem.

It's an issue a few other people have. It'll depend on the network you're using. The connect message from Google is either being dropped or delayed. Which is why you still hear ring back.

My father is traveling to Vietnam & has GrooveIP installed on his EVO with the associated Google Voice account & of course - he will be on WiFi connection only since it is a CDMA phone not an international GSM phone.

Questions:

1) If we make calls to him from the US - using GrooveIP will it ring on his GV app or his GIP app?
2) If we make calls to him from the US - using Google Voice will it ring on his GV app or his GIP app?
3) Will either of these US originated calls be charged the Google prices or is it free?

thanks for any clarification.

To receive calls with the app you'll have to forward calls to google chat in the google voice account (google.com/voice).

Because of this announcement you may need Google credit to make/receive calls outside the US Official Google Blog: Calling from Gmail now in 38 languages, with lower rates to over 150 destinations

So far people we know have been able to use the app without credit outside the US, it may be because their account was created in the US.

I'm not 100% sure but I think they mean placing a call from a computer and not a mobile device.
