[APP] GrooVe IP - Google Voice VoIP

To receive calls with the app you'll have to forward calls to google chat in the google voice account (google.com/voice).

Because of this announcement you may need Google credit to make/receive calls outside the US Official Google Blog: Calling from Gmail now in 38 languages, with lower rates to over 150 destinations

So far people we know have been able to use the app without credit outside the US, it may be because their account was created in the US.

First of all - Thanks for a great product!

2nd - all your instructions & support has worked as described!

3rd - not sure if GV credit systems refreshed immediately but tested with my father calling from Vietnam to US & me calling him from US, & it appears no credits were deducted either way.

Will check tomorrow.
Sorry for being a bit unclear with the original question.
But basically it was mobile to mobile call internationally and GIP performed as advertised on both of our EVO's.

Thanks again!

No problem. Glad it worked for you. Our testers are also able to still make calls from overseas. My guess is it's only restricted if your account was originally created overseas.

Well I confirmed today & my father's Google Voice account was not charged for any International GrooveIP calls originating outside of the US.

Most excellent App - free Wifi everywhere!

Thinking about getting a Motorola Atrix 4G running Android 2.3. Does the app support the Atrix?

Yes. It's one of the phones we test and develop with. You'll have to change a few settings in the app. Like turn on echo cancelation and enable audio processing (under troubleshooting). We also increase the mic gain a bit too.

Hi, Just bought the app the other day and I love it but, I cannot receive calls. I can call out and the reception is perfect but no one can call me. I have a Optimus V rooted running the Bumblebee 2.4 Rom and all accounts are logged out.

Hi swann,

It is a great app! Glad it's working well for your outbound calls.

Did you consider searching this thread? See my post here for a possible solution. Are you able to answer calls with Google Chat on a PC?

Bad news - we may have run into some trouble with the outgoing calls/txt from Vietnam.

Just checked the online SPCS billing & noticed some international calls & text were being charged the exorbitant SPCS roaming rates.

I am trying to gather up the info & see what happen.
But on the surface, it appears that I can't originate calls from outside the US without being charged the domestic carrier rates.

Comments?

Only way the carrier would get notified of calls is if the calls went over their network and not over the app. The most likely way this could happen is for incoming calls. If you don't have them forwarded to google chat and they are forwarded instead to your cell number that would use your cell network.

GrooVe IP does not provide SMS, not sure what you are using for SMS. Easiest way to block the native system would be to put the phone in airplane mode and only enable the WiFi.

You are correct on the first point: the billings were only on Incoming calls as of now!
I just checked my father's account & calls were being forwarded to Google Chat, Sprint, & his home phone.

>>> Am I correct in assuming that I have to uncheck the Sprint & home options when traveling abroad?

Sorry about the SMS, they were going thru the native system. Guess I'll have to goto airplane+wifi mode.

Thanks.

He can use the official Google Voice app for SMS if he wants. That will send and receive SMS using his Google Voice number and uses the data connection only. Just set the Google Voice app to never make calls.

In his Google Voice account (google.com/voice) uncheck Sprint & home (if no one's home) when traveling abroad.

I'm having trouble with outgoing audio quality on a Nexus One. All of my testing is over wi-fi with a good DSL connection. I used an Obi100 with Google Voice before, so I think the Internet connection is OK.

I have to keep the earpiece volume high or I can't hear callers. I adjusted the mic gain down to -5 to reduce the echo the callers were getting. Now callers say I'm too quiet, and I'm dropping out on them. I've tried audio processing and echo cancellation, but they didn't seem to help the outgoing audio. Incoming audio seems to be OK no matter which settings I use. I think I may have adjusted some settings too far, and I need to start over.

What audio and troubleshooting settings work well on a Nexus One? If I want to reset Groove IP to its defaults, do I just uncheck everything under audio and troubleshooting and then set the speaker and mic gains to 0?

You can clear the app cache and data from the android application menu. That will reset everything to the default state. I'd recommend setting the keep screen alive checkbox if you're making calls over WiFi.

I have read through and I have seen people with the same problem but I haven't seen a solution to the problem. I have seen people with the same phone and it works for them and then some say it doesn't work. I will wait and see if snrb will reply and see what they say about the problem.

Are you able to receive calls when the screen is on? What happens when someone tries to call you?

I'm assuming you've forwarded calls to Google Chat already in your Google Voice account.

In version 1.2.4 you can try enabling the Partial Wake Lock in the troubleshooting settings.

This was an expensive lesson to learn. ~$200 in international roaming charges in 7 days out of 30 so far(@@!!).
Unchecking these options in our web GV account settings & going to airplane mode. Arghhh, I am so mad I didn't know about this before.

Thanks for the directions!

Just to add to this since my Dad just incurred $200 in roaming charges because we didn't follow the above steps when using GrooveIP overseas:

Turning on airplane will grey out all the Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Data settings.

I cannot receive calls at any point whether the screen is on or not, I have set to stay awake. Yes, everything is set to forward and I'm signed out everywhere too. When someone calls it just rings on there phone and does nothing.

Did you ever have your account linked to a sip service like pbxes.org? If that link still exists calls could be going there. Do you receive calls in Google Chat when you log in to gmail on a pc?

This is the first time I have tried out a voip service. I cannot receive calls through anything-Google Voice or Groove IP. Now for some reason i cannot even call out with Google voice from the PC, I can still call out from my phone with Groove.

Have you completed the registration for a google voice number? Where they call you back and you enter a verification code? If calls aren't forwarded anywhere you'll likely have to contact Google Voice support.

Yea, when I signed up, I got the call and entered the number and everything went through.

If it doesn't even send calls to Google Chat when you log in on a PC then there's little I can suggest. You'll likely have to contact the Google Voice support to see why calls aren't being forwarded properly. Alternatively you can try creating a new gmail and google voice account to see if that fixes it.

GrooVeIP does not show on top in this scenario. Groove IP starts ringing first and then native phone starts ringing. There is no way of getting back to groove ip and answering the call through it? Is there a setting to bring Groove IP to the top?
Ditto. This is very disappointing. I can make free outgoing calls with GrooVe IP, but incoming calls use my minutes when Google Voice forwards to my T-Mobile number.

Ran over the last few pages and haven't seen this mentioned...

When I'm using this on wifi and get a text message, it disconnects my call. If it matters, I'm on a Nexus One on TMobile.
