Are there any Bible apps?

The Best Bible program I feel is CrossConnect ESV .
There is also an option for a listen of every chapter in the Bible.
None can compare.

Just found this forum and it is awesome. My wife and I have HTC Desires and love them. I did install the CrossConnect App and I must say I really love this app. It is quick to find any verse you are looking for. Jcru if you wrote this, great job!!

I did not quite understand the purpose of loading the extra module (online version) ?? it seemed pointless to do that when the app itself has everything I need. Am I missing something??

I wanted ESV and something quick so I can use it to read in church. I tried to find something for the Kindle but that seemed to be a lost cause. It would be really nice if this type of program was also available in a Kindle format.

Did you try YV for ESV?

I did not but I will load it up and check it out as well. I see there are quite a few posts liking it. I just installed the other one first and really liked it. The one thing I am not thrilled about on the CrossConnect is that the verse numbers are so small that I can't see them. I am only 42 but I have to wear reading glasses and those vs numbers are tiny! they should be red which would make them more visible as well.

I will certainly try the YV for ESV as well and post my thoughts on it.

Man, you ever ridden a Tarus and then got into a Cadilac :D . Not knocking the first one I loaded but the YouVersion is totally amazing!!! . That is just what the doctor ordered.

I am thinking that I can load the Java version on my wife's Eee tablet as well. I could not find a good "read the Bible in a year ebook but I bet the Java version of YV can be loaded on her tablet (laptop). I am anxious to get home and load YV on her phone and try the Java version on her Windows 7. Very glad I found the forum!

This actually solved two problems in one. She and I really wanted to get a 1 year reading plan and this has many to choose from. I showed her how she can log on with her tablet to read with it or she can just use her HTC if she wants to read from there.

I got her a Kindle recently since she reads all the time. she loves the Kindle. I wish there was some way to have the reading plans on the kindle. that would be the icing on the cake. We have ESV study Bibles so that is the version we will read. Maybe someday the YV folks will make the basic reading plans available in Kindle format for free or minimal fee on Amazon, then the plan could be downloaded to the kindle and then you would be totally free to read on which ever medium was the most convenient that day.

They have the text for the plans, it would seem that it should be pretty easy to just submit it to Amazon in the kindle format. There are lots of free books on Amazon so someone had to sumbit the books to Amazon for free download.

Do you think YV would consider doing that?

As of now, I don't know of a specific Kindle version. It still can be accessed, of course with a Kindle that has internet connectivity, but no offline version exists.

If you create accounts, your reading plans are available anywhere you two are connected.

YouVersion was created with an emphasis on connectivity. The downloadable translations are an extra blessings. I'll ask the folks in charge if a Kindle port is in the works.

Tre,
I started my reading plan today :) I have a question. When I come across a verse that I want to look up references and meaning on, can I do that within the YV mobile app? My selected reading version is ESV.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

There are no in-depth study Bibles just yet. When you longpress the verse itself, you should.get access to "community notes" which are basically introspective/academic insights into the verse in question. You can also add your own.

I have found that these notes can be tremendously useful as study tools. Some pastors actually put out entire sermons in the notes section for Live events.

As far as the Kindle goes, I just heard back from the pastor who oversees the project: Amazon had, at one time, put a limit on size of apps for Kindle. They are gonna check if the limit is still on place; if not, they are open to looking at demand.

Hopefully, I interpreted what he said correctly... :)

Hey Tre,
That is great. I can't see how there would be any size restrictions when you look at some other stuff in the Kindle library. What would ideal is if they took each version and made that its own Kindle book. So in other words, don't try to cram every version into one Kindle book. Just my thoughts.

I purchased the ESV Study Bible on Amazon and loaded it today so that coupled with the YV reader should be a really awesome combination!

Thanks again for all of your answers and assistance !!

I like And Bible - There are lots of free bibles, commentaries and dictionaries to download and use off-line and because it is open source you can always improve it if you don't like it. There are also lots of foreign language bibles available and a number of interface localisations if your first language is not English or you like to read the bible in another language.

Having said I like and use And Bible I must confess I am biased because I am the developer and there are lots of other terrific bible applications available for Android and the main thing is not the application but reading the Word of God.

YouVersion NIV available for a limited time on your Android and iOS devices. This means it is one of the versions you can use offline.

The "And Bible" app is my preferred Bible application on my phone and my tablet for the time being. It has Strong's Hebrew and Greek, which are REALLY helpful. It is easily the best free Bible app out there, in my experience.

Once Olive Tree releases an update (WITH SPLITSCREEN!) of their Biblereader app for Android, I'll probably end up spending a boatload of money on some heavy-duty books for that. They have some really great resources, but the interface is pretty terrible at the moment, and you do have to pay a lot for those resources.

I still have OliveTree on my device. It is pretty good, and their service across platforms is phenomenal.

I will check And Bible out. Sounds compelling.

I've already downloaded this, it's the NEW 2010 edition of the NIV. I was using it just last night in house group. So great to be able to use it in off line mode. YouVersion has been the best Bible app I've used.

Daily Bible has been mentioned. I'll give that my vote. Tons of devotionals, daily verse, multiple translations, and the list goes on.

Saw the post about And Bible and that seems really nice also. Possibly CadreBible also. They said Cadrebible is very much like E-Sword is what I use on my desktop.

And Bible is put out by Crosswire Bible Society, which is the same group that puts out E-Sword and Pocket Sword.

Thanks for the info Zebulon. I've used e-sword from Rick Meyers (e-sword.net) for many years. I'm assuming you meant "sword" from crosswire, not "e-sword". I see crosswire has "jsword", "macsword", "pocketsword".

I just got my android and found this thread trying to find a good offline Bible. Thanks for all the feedback. I was very encouraged about how old the thread is and yet didn't find any garbage thrown in by folks not really looking for a Bible.

Based on the thread, I think I'll try YouVersion first. OliveTree looked compelling, but I've paid for the NASB a few times now in print, electronic and ... well.. would rather not buy yet another copy.

Oh... there has been garbage... the mods just clean it up very quickly.

YouVersion is becoming more accessible now that they have offline Bibles accessible.

Olivetree is fantastic too, in that if you purchase a Bible, it stays with you, across platforms. I have had them on Palm, BlackBerry and Android.

hi all - i'm looking for a bible app, but in french which hopefully will have daily verses notification.
The ones i found, are either plain french bible, or daily verses only in english. Please HELP!

Thanks!

I'd be grateful for any recommendations as well for what you think the best three apps are. I have only just got my first new phone for over 5 years a Defy from an N70 so am still just getting used to it.

I was previously using PhoneyBible which I thought was quite good. It was very basic though but simple and easy to use. I don't know if I can install this on Defy as it is a Java app? I have tried once or twice but had these paused download issues. I have since selected Lifechurch.tv Bible from the Android Marketplace. I'm not sure if this one is any good or not I have only just got it downloaded and installed so will check it out and report back.

If you have any other recommendation's I'd appreciate it. I guess having one that I can also search for keywords or small phrases would be useful. I think PhoneyBible was just KJV or NIV I can't remember which. I do like to look at and flip between different versions though for the different language and wording.

Cheers,
John
