are we ever getting gingerbread?

normally i would just "tuna burger?" this, but this time i have to ask... i'm not seeing the connection...

WTH does a windows laptop vs desktop debate have to do with the question carrier/manufacturer's ability or plans to update a phone's OS ? None of which has anything to do with microsoft or PCs ? I'm hoping there is something i missed.
Sometimes we get a little distracted. I know I ought to have a longer attention span than...oh! Shiny!

OK all this talk of windows and gingerbread has me thinking of something that's been on my mind a while. Folks have wondered why android and chromeos need to exist separately but i say let google do what google does. what *does* weird me out is Chrome, the browser, on Android. That almost makes Android the big brother. Could we be using android apps on windows thru Chrome someday ?

I'd imagine it would look something like THIS.

Any thoughts ?

Some of the software changes made at request of virgin mistakenly broke the over air update function and is not fixable so there will not be an official gb update.

Ok, so how about updating via your computer? or is it not possible to update the OpV because we do not have software comparable to the BB RIM?

I hear ya about the money...I was half joking when I said I probably wouldn't have my V by mid-2012, only 'cause the thing is pissing me off so much the last few days it's taken all my resolve not to throw it against the wall.

It's not that I'm not a fan of rooting; just a fan of whatever works for each person, and up til now not rooting has worked really well for me. I'm starting to rethink that, maybe (see above, lol). Now don't everyone start bugging me at once. :p I'm still not doing it until my warranty is up, if ever.

I am also considering rooting in the looooooooooooong run.. I hate to say it, but the OpV came in with a couple of crappy stock apps, the twitter one and I forget what the otherone is... I started watching rooting vids trhis week... I don't like the fact that there isn't yet an app that you install, execute and zap! rooted phone!...
I find it hilarious that some kids talk to you about rooting as if it was not a big deal, as if you are already an expert on Linuz and as if you are nerds like them... (I know this question is probably for another thread, but do any of you have any reliable sources to learn Rooting the OpV from??)

Actually it is Linux. ;)

I am a software engineer with 15 years experience, and I am not comfortable with rooting an Android phone. I have rooted other android phones on Verizon, but in those cases I had the software from the manufacturer that writes to the ROM, and I had a copy of the original ROM to reset the phone back to stock. Even then it was a nerve wracking expericence because I did not want to end up with bricked phone and have to pay $500 to replace a phone off contract.

I used to work for a locally owned cell company, and I was paid to hack their smartphones. We had the original Titan, and the boss wanted them to function as GPS units for the cell tower techs. So, equipped with a company phone and a spirit of adventure, I learned. That's why I have accounts at PPCgeeks and XDA that are almost three years old, but I've never posted there. Androids are much less scary to tinker on, but that's just my opinion. The big thing is to not feel intimidated. There are many good reasons not to root your phone, but fear shouldn't be one of them.

@Godsdragon - The root subforum here has everything you need in the stickies, plus several active members ready to help you out almost every step of the way.

Zank you guyz... really I do know how to zpell...:D
I will go to the thread and stick my nose there, rather than look for vids on youtube... Good idea and zank you again...:p

They blocked the lgupdater as well. We can walk you through the process. I just rooted two more last night its not to bad just can seem intimidating.

Let me think about, read about and watch about it first.. I rooted my first android (samsung moment) or so I thought, so the whole thing really is a steep learning curve for me...
Thanks though.. :)

Jager + Eggnog = Drunk Kitty. Might have to try that one, he's not too much into catnip.

Jager = my cat. (it means hunter, plus he looked like a tiny black jellybean when we got him. figure that one out hehe.)

Ok..Thank you... How about a page with rooting language definitions, specially for ROM, RECOVERY,FLASH, ETC ETC.. I do need the whole "enchilada" of defs...(would they be by any chance on any of those two pages you posted? (I skimmed thru the first one only but did not see defs)):o

Thanks again!:o

Rom is a modified version of an operating system. Flash is installing through your recovery. Recovery allows you to do allot of thing such as flashing and backing up its great for recovering from an error aka the name recovery.

A page like this one? The best place to start is actually here. El Presidente has collected the best guides, how to's, and how not to's in one place. Plus, he keeps it updated with links to the best guides and such as we write them. Everything you wanted to know about root but were afraid to ask!

This page of the thread is like a roller coaster- laughter at the beginning and now I have a massive headache and nausea...:p
