two methods of rooting, that i have found to be the easiest, are Gingerbreak(rooting your phone by using an app) and Superoneclick(using a one click method by using a program on your computer).now both methods root your phone, but the rest,(installing a recovery, and rom) you have to do on your own, which may seem scary when reading how to do so, but as long as you follow the instructions to the letter, then you will think, "that wasnt that hard at all!"
Besides, "are we ever getting gingerbread?" doesn't really matter in there.
Even though both are owned by Sprint, they don't work like that where one subsidiary will upgrade the rom for another subsidiary. Otherwise dozens of others here on the forums would of posted about it a long time ago. The only way you're going to get 2.3 right now is if you root the phone and install a custom rom. If you're not willing to do that, then you will have to wait along with every other VM customer with an OpV for them to publicly announce an OTA upgrade. When they do this, everyone will know about it (just like last time when they did an OTA update for the Intercept... it was all over the mobile news sites and on forums).
