Well. I regret reading this article. I sat here thinking geez... ppl call 911 a lot n I never have. Lol. Well my fiance was driving n we were rear ended at a red light. Were fine.. but it made the 911 call fine. I was using gps nav and a few other things. It connected okay but five mins later after thr emergeny mode went out my mom called n I answered... talked for one min before the phone restarted. I have never had a problem with my phone rebooting while on the phone.

Edit: Actually its been messing up and freezing n being sluggish since. Odd.

glad everyone was OK.... now you know why .. I think this 911 issue can be a very big issue.

can you imagine if your accident was much worse .. and you could not call 911 to get help out to you ASAP for your love one? How will you handle that? I would want to kill someone!

I use my EVO to routinely make calls to 911. I report stranded motorists, those who have been in collisions, and people who are broken down in traffic who need the police and/or a tow truck. I have done so at least a half dozen times with my EVO, and in each case, it enters emergency mode upon my dialing 911. After the call is over, it prompts me to exit by touching the Menu button and then selecting the Exit Emergency Mode. It works every time and has never rebooted.

Thursday, while driving home on a rainy night, a pickup directly in front of me hydroplaned, crossed the centerline and opposing traffic lane, jumped the ditch, and ended up mowing down a split-rail fence, which brought it to a stop. I pulled over and went to check on the driver (in a downpour), while my wife called 911 on her EVO. Since we were on a country road, my wife could only give a cross street that was about a half mile from us. When she couldn't do any better, the dispatcher said, "Wait. Oh, I see you. I know exactly where you are." (I suspect she got the GPS fix from the phone.) The police and fire trucks arrived within ten minutes. (No one ended up being hurt. The fire trucks came because we saw a blueish electrical flash during the impact, which we mistook for a power line coming down on the truck. It turns out the truck did not hit the power poles, but one of the fence posts impaled and exploded his battery.)

How'd ya 'test' a 911 call? Did you dial 911 and tell the operator that you were just testing if it worked on your cell phone?

I work for 911. You are always welcome to test your phone using 911. It is however, very important to stay on the line and tell the operator that you are just testing your phone. We are required to try and make contact with any abandoned calls. So please stay on the line and talk to the operator. It does waste time if we have to call you back to find you were just testing your phone. I will be testing my evo for this to be sure there are no problems.

This has happened to me a number of times.

I dial 9-1-1 and the phone reboots subsequently it also reboots everytime I turn on my GPS.

I haven't called Sprint about it yet. I will be tomorrow.

Since the two EVOs in my home are the only phones I have this issue does worry me quite a bit. I tested my phone by making calls with the GPS running using Google Navigation and had completely variable results. The first call disconnected and rebooted the phone immediately. The next call took nearly 3 minutes before a reboot. A third call lasted 20 minutes before I just gave up and ended the call on my own.

I also made a test call to 911 from both of my EVOs without any issues, but I'm not sure this was a definitive test since it didn't activate the GPS (911 operator said they would only identify location with towers).

I emailed/called Sprint who then contacted HTC (or so they say) and their opinion is that a new EVO would fix the problem. Not really sure how this could be a hardware issue.

I've also had a few random reboots at other times when the phone is idle, but no issues with constant GPS reboots like others have reported.

never had this problem on sprint using other phones, as I could exit with i believe a combo of keys but both wife and i needed to dial 911 today at same time and we are stuck. Doesn't seem reasonable to either take out battery or reboot. no options on menu or other settings venue, nor does app killer help.

No exorcist needed, just do a little reading, then root and flash an AOSP rom. The demon's name is Sense, btw

As I recall from several threads dating back to last Fall, the issue affects a small subset of Evo's. And actually, the issue stems from the Evo rebooting while GPS is enabled and in use. A lot of people were complaining their Evo would reboot in mid navigation use.

Not everyone had this problem. I use Nav all the time and my phone has never rebooted. So it's unclear if the problem is with the Evo or something that the user has done (maybe installed something that doesn't play nice, etc).

As for resurrecting old threads, people should remember that some people arrive to these forums based on Google searches, and sometimes, Google finds an old thread to be most relevant. So don't fault people for reviving old threads.
