Root Ask question's here (Dont flood the root topic, please)

As death2all110 said VZB patched it.

Just a little something i observed with the OTA and rooting.

For me Universal Androot 1.6.5 beta 5 said it rooted it but when i tried running barnacle still got the error for no root. So i decided to try Androot 1.6.5 beta and it worked. Also androot 1.6.1 rooted it for another person.

Just throwing that out there.

I've got 1.6.2 beta 5, worked great. I hadn't realized I was outdated.

Please help, i was doing a restore from another thread back to v6 and everything was going smoothly my phone went to a screen that says Downloading do no unplug...so after the software on the pc kept telling me no connection i would just keep trying again and after so many attemps it didnt let me retry anymore...so after trying hard reboot removing battery etc. this screen remains....please tell me i didnt brick my phone any advice is welcome....... i am pretty computer savy so i will try anything command promp. etc...

Hi all,
I rooted my ally using Universal Androot. Added Titanium backup, Barnacle, velocity ROM and cleaned her up. However three things changed after rooting. My screen does not lock inspite of checking the Require pattern option under Settings. The home button does not take me to the Home screen. To get back, I have to press the back key repeatedly. Thirdly, pressing the Call button does not take me to the Phone app.

Anyone else face this problem? Any advice on fixes besides a re-root?
Also, any suggestions on getting APPS2SD without the cyanogen mod?

Thanks.

You're best bet is to do a reset. You do this by turning off your phone, then holding the home, VOL UP/DOWN button, and the power button until it turns on. It will reset it back to factory settings, but all of your apps and whatnot will still be on there, you just have to go under the Market and reinstall them. I just had to do this, so you shouldn't have problems.:)

I need help with my rooting. I done all the steps and after I put /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh in at the $ area, all I get is opening similar to this [+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/15767/fd/3. after that shows up, I get nothing. It doesnt say successful or anything. just sits at that with a blinking cursor. no # sign or $ sign, just a blinking underscore. any suggestions?

The rooting thread should really be updated with this...

If you have the most recent update, this method will no longer work. Universal Androot, however, does. It's even in the market now.

I was successful in installing Velocity 0.2, signed_clockwork_to_RA_aloha, and a2sd_ally_Velocity.2.zip. However, after I followed the instructions on installing GNM_TURBO4.zip, when I rebooted, my phone gets to the Droid I and loops endlessly through the Droid logo and eye sequence. I did clear the caches as directed, and I even tried flashing it again with the same result. The only way I could fix it was to reinstall Velocity 0.2.

Can someone please advise me? Thanks!

EDITED: Never mind - I found elsewhere it was the app2sd program causing the issue. I've got Turbo on now. GTG!!

when i uncheck the usb debugging, the computersays foun new software and i hit install software automaticly and it says the download failed or something..... help?

Not sure where to post this, but here we go:

I recently made a backup in clockwork recovery. Before doing so, I noticed that I had a voicemail (the icon appeared on the status bar). I did not think to check said voicemail until after I made my backup. I checked it and the icon disappeared. I then, did some stuff with applying themes (making sure to clear my cache and dalvik cache and making more backups before applying the new themes). I later restored my first backup that I made (today) and now I can't get rid of the voicemail icon. I rebooted the phone, called my voicemail to see if I actually had a new one, but it did nothing to get the thing off my status bar. Is there anyway to get rid of it? Or should I restore one of the backups I made after checking the voicemail and just apply the theme that I wanted.

Edit: Nevermind. I got my mom to call me and leave a voicemail and when I checked it, the icon disappeared.

Also, where are these backups stored? Thank you.

Also, where are these backups stored? Thank you.

There stored on your sdcard depending on which recovery you use. If you are using clockwork they would be in /clockwork/backups or something similar to that on the sdcard. With drellidee's amon-ra recovery they are stored in a nandroid folder on the sdcard.

Ally or Moto Droid 1? I have an Ally with Velocity .3 and JIT kernel running at 787 and around 9 MFLOPS. You think the droid is worth 100 bucks to pickup from a friend and OC? what are the benchmarks for the droid? is it THAT much faster and smoother wen modded?

My ally keeps randomly showing that the sd card was unexpectedly removed. I haven't done anything to damage the hardware. I had the v0.3 rom and with ap2sd, it would freeze up, reboot, then boot loop on the velocity boot image. is it because it's the card that came with the phone. It did that before I even knew about rooting. also I would like to change the eri.xml in the framework to say my name, but all I can find is instructions on how to do this on a moto droid. I can't get it to work for me. any suggestions?

I feel well a little squishy and warm but my incompatence with technology is feeling like I'm a little slow what does linux adb in directory and wget followed by a link what do I do with that I see these instructions and fury and a great deal of confusion consumes me please explain what it all means even lamer

nah not worth 100. my gf has one and i put the simply stunning rom and oced it... it looks nice but my games run a bit faster on my ally (maybe due to the smaller screen?). its kinda like trading a v6 camaro for a v6 mustang.

you need the android sdk (found on the official android site) which has a program called abd in the tools folder. one would use windows cmd as an administrator and would type C:\android\sdk\tools or something like it(install directory) to access adb. this creates linux shell on windows and talks to your phone. if your looking to root use the newest copy of universal androot and you will be fine, the old copies don't work.

try pluging it in the wall socket, idk it works sometimes, then try ally rr which i believe is your best bet. i bricked my phone once and it was the only way i got it working. if not try holding the combo of buttons to enter recovery while its turning on. if all else fails try to flash it again with the lg tool but after running ally rr, access to fastboot might allow the computer to see you ally as a device again. just remember to turn off your anti-virus/firewall first. (it can screw up the process)

First of all what the heck did myfishbear get b& for? Can't see anything in recent posts... hope it's only temporary, the guy seems to be pretty helpful... :confused:
(edit: I see that's now been addressed! Yay for helping a guy out :) )

Anyway, I'm stuck at "asroot2". Most people seem to have failures where asroot2 simply doesn't give them a root shell, but gives them a shell none the less (and claims "success"). Mine does nothing, it just hangs when I run asroot2, and while it hangs, it makes a copy of itself and both processes use full CPU time (each one using 30..45% CPU). If I run it with no parameters it gives me "/data/local/asroot2 args", kind of a basic way of saying "tell me what to do, dummy". Still no luck.

I've had the ADB and terminal tools on my unrooted Ally for quite some time, so I had more of the root process already done than I thought. Now as I get more and more sick of the background apps launching (city ID, amazon mp3, and a random assortment of apps I've installed over the months) and running in the background, I figure it's time to gut this thing and clean out all the crap.

I've applied each update that's come OTA, in hopes that they'll fix the buggy software bundled with it. My version shows "SW version VS740ZVB", "Firmware version 2.1-update1", "Build number ERE27". I'd like to try to avoid "restoring" (resetting) it if at all possible... I've got a good number of apps and customizations I really won't much like to have to reset :/ Just wanted to be able to take screenshots and remove the crap from the phone ;)

Any ideas?

If your on VS740ZVB this method will no longer work as it has been patched from my understanding.

Use Unviersal Androot from this site to get rooted. Android Ally

Awhhhhh's, crap. That's what I was afraid of. Well, good to know, I googled the heck out of it and haven't had any luck finding any info about any patches having broken rooting.

No problem with downgrading anyway, since none of the OTA patches have fixed any significant issues - only fixed the home wallpaper alignment when switching orientation modes. I've got a falcon on mine and when I'm on the center screen, he's perfectly centered on the screen, but if I switch to landscape and back the picture would be off to one side until I slide screens, kinda annoying. Now that's fixed, but everything else is still broken, hence it's time to take matters into my own hands ;)

edit: HAH! Awesome! Didn't even need to downgrade or anything! "Woot! Your device is rooted!" - happiness! Thanks for the pointer :D

So this first part is a copy of a previous post of mine that covers my history so far & should help with the new questions I have,...just remember that I'm a noob at all of this.:confused:

I took the plunge, after months of reading (trying to get smarter) & rooted my Ally with Universal Androot 1.6.2, (worked flawlessly), then installed ClockworkMod w/Rom Manager v2.5.0.4 (had some issues at 1st) Had the damnedest time Rebooting into Recovery, even manually(send/menu/end). The app acted like it was doing what I told it to till it got to rebooting. the triangle with the android would pop up for about 1 second then it was blank followed quickly by the LG logo where it would bootup like nothing had been done. I got this same result when "Reboot into Recovery","Install ROM from SD Card","Backup current ROM". But being the bullheaded soul that I am I just keep pushing & occasionally things would happen. I finally got to do a Nandroid Backup of my work so far. Then I got brave and flashed my 1st ROM, Raptor v0.1. Again with the persistence & slowly success. However things seemed to run kinda slow. So I got brave once more and flashed the Velocity 0.2-aloha. I will go back to Raptor to try it out but for now Velocity is doing better for me. Both of these flashed using "Install ROM from SD Card" option with zipfiles. I also checked both options,(backup & wipe) that CWM offers. Now things started working better. I'm having less problems with CWM, however the "Download ROM" option still doesn't seem to work, (error occurred while processing the ROM list). I have copied 3 backups of successful ROM installs(stock w/root & CWM, RaptorV0.1, Velocity V0.2)to a file on my computer for future use if necessary. I followed info given, courtesy of the following links;

1 http://androidforums.com/trident/17...ally-big-release-fast-android-2-1-stable.html

2 http://androidforums.com/ally-all-t...overy-roms-includes-screenshots-recovery.html

So now I've reinstalled most of my fav. apps & widgets when it occurs to me that I haven't setup A2SD. Once again I read then choose to go with the info I found @;
http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/191916-a2sd-multi-roms-ally.html & http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/192571-howto-partition-your-sdcard-a2sd.html

I even tried to partition the sd card from recovery but didn't have the "clear option" to do so. Here are the following options that I'm presented with;
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced

Now if you're still with me after all that, just trying to answer anticipated questions from all of you, I'll get to my questions;

1. With Killertonez's method all is good till step 4. I don't see that option using CWM and can't seem to find any way to setup any ext's at all. Ideas, tips?, am I crossing the wrong fingers????

2. With Savoxis's method during step 3 I choose the biggest, step 4 I choose 0. I send it on its merry little way to do its work then reboot. When I look at the sd card I don't see anything that looks like a partition. I check for the partition in the terminal enumerator by typing "df" then enter. What am I doing wrong???? Am I blind????

3. Once I'm successful with the job of partitioning, I'm assuming that the correct file to use is the a2sd_ally_Velocity.2.zip file in my configuration. I don't think I've changed the kernel(plz refer to history above as I'm a noob & am not sure of what I've done). Any objections????

4. And lastly, after doing all this work will this allow me to swap ROMs & still have all my stuff ready to import,backup, & setup manually or will it be up and running when I finish flashing a new ROM?

:confused::confused::confused::confused:
Thanks in advance for any help!

yeah check here Android Ally and copy androot to your phone and run it to root your phone...just use the newest copy... this allows app programs to be ran on your phone. tethering shares your phone's internet connection but vzw charges you extra for that so i never tether.

please help im running out of ideas. i get all the way to the $ type in
"/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh" and get a "not found " message. what am i doing wrong?
