Root Ask question's here (Dont flood the root topic, please)

After doing alittle research i found it google had pulled it from the market (twice now i think). And the chinese one i haven't the slightiest clue what that is. But if you search xda-developers you can find the offical thread there with offical releases.

I don't necessarily want to remove these, but here are 3 items listed in Titanium Backup not on the list:
certificate installer 2.1 update 1
checkin service 2.1 update 1
com.android.providers.application

There are many other files like this that I have no idea if they should or can be removed. I'm satisfied with the way things are now; I've removed the obvious bloatware and left everything else.

What else can a rooted phone do that an unrooted phone can't do?

Don't forget, a complete Ti Backup backs up data as well as apps. Those three look like system data files, leave them alone.

A rooted phone can install customs ROMs, kernels, themes and overclock the processor (the Ally runs stock at 600mhz, most people have been able to speed it up to at least 729mhz).

Among many other things :D
 
everytime i try to root with the adb commands in cmd prompt it starts up the daemon tools and it kicks pdanet offline and then i gotta log off and log back on again (on windows 7) to reconnect with pdanet. Any solutions??
 
i'm having trouble rooting my device. I've dowloaded several different files and renamed them to update.zip but none of them have worked as of yet. the same error occurs when i select to install new packages from the recovery menu.
It says error in sdcard update.zip status 7. what dies this mean? what do i do?

Have you tried z4root or universal androot? I know that they are both removed from the market but i'm pretty sure you can still find them via 4shared.com
 
I have a rooted ally running velocity v03. It powers up, runs through the LG, Verizon, Droid, Droid Eye. Prepares the SD card, and loads up the screen where the dots are for the password. Gives me a notification that the USB Debugging is on. Then does a soft reboot to the droid screen. I tried using allyrr to recover, but it gives me a JIT error.

allyrr2 got me into clockwork recovery once, but clockwork mod gave me an error also. It said that the security code something was not correct.

If anyone can help me, please let me know.

I have successfully run Z4Root on my stock Ally. But my only interest at the moment in doing this is to move apps to my SD card so I will quite getting low memory messages every time I want to install an app. I don't want to install a different ROM, and at the moment am not interested in overclocking.

I tried to research Apps2SD and A2SD and both took me down some very convoluted trail with a lot of stuff that seems to make the Linux-based rooting process at the beginning of this thread look easy. :p Needless to say I don't want to go that way.

So is there a way to move apps to the SD, now that I am rooted, that is as straight-forward as it was to run Z4Root? :confused:

BTW, if anyone is having trouble finding Z4Root I found it on the XDA Forum this evening.

You first need to partition your sd card before you can use apps2sd and I found a decent video on youtube that shows you how to do that and will walk you through it step by step. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dMxzqATMFg He says that you need to reflash velocity when done which I don't remember if I had to do that but in your case you can just use your stock rom. Once partitioning is done you can flash apps2sd. Hope this helps a little bit.
 
Thanks, I really do appreciate the help. But fortunately for me, I was able to accomplish it already with the help of some of you good folks, especially "Dots".

There is so much helpful info on here it can seem a bit overwhelming the first time you try to sort through it. But when in doubt, it always pays to ask for help. I'd also like to say thanks to the Ally IRC channel too!

I have a silly question. How does z4root work? Do i just copy the apk onto my ally, then run it and hit root, and then voila? My SW Version is VS740ZVC and I rooted successfully before with the cmd line method, then lost it in an OTA update. I would like to have root again and I've read that this is only/easiest method with my SW.

Yep, download the apk, install it, then open up z4root and click root.

Simplest and safest way to root.
 
so i installed the new market vending.apk on this forum and now when i open the market its the new one, but when i try to do anything on it the vending.apk force closes...

Just keep in mind that it is a well known issue that Z4root sometimes doesn't work on the first attempt. For me it worked in temporary mode. Then after rebooting and trying it in permanent mode the next day I had to make 3 attempts before it finally worked. And it can take anywhere from 2-10 minutes, so when you see the little wheel spinning what seems like forever, keep an eye on the time. If it takes more than 10 minutes, reboot and try again. There is a change to the message on its blue screen when it is successful and will announce it is going to reboot the phone.

But yes, it is that simple.

Scenario - You have Pattern Lock turned on. You press the power key to turn on your screen. You then have "X" amount of time to start entering the pattern. If you don't start in that time frame the screen turns back off.

Is there a way to lengthen the "X" amount of time before the screen turns back off?

Is there a way to deodex manually? I've been checking all the forums and have yet to find a way to do it on my Ally. I have the ZVC updated rom stripped down and I don't want to lose my settings. I also want to just know how to do it manually. Also which settings shouls I save to my sdcard in order to retain my browser bookmarks? I hate doing that every time I flash something new. Thanks everyone for your hard work on this little phone. It makes tthe free upgrade worth learning this system.
 
Within the various ROM's that I have enjoyed I have located (in the zipfiles) the folders for alarms, notifications, ringtones and such but have not located the place where the wallpapers are. I'm probably blind but can someone enlighten me? Thanks..:confused:
 
That's a good question. I used Root Explorer and searched the whole SD card for "wallpaper". The only 4 returns were items found within a Titanium Backup I had made. I am now searching the internal memory to see if I can find them in there.

I found several returns in the path:

data/data/ listing .APK files, .XML files, and .ODEX files. My guess is that they are contained in an XML file or whatever an ODEX is. I think the APK files listed are the apps used to display either static or live wallpaper. But I'm new to this so if I got it wrong someone feel free to chime in. :)

Finally, I looked manually in the /data/data folder and saw things like:

com.android.wallpaper
com.android.wallpaper.livepicker
com.android.magicsmoke

I think Magic Smoke is one of the live wallpapers I had used at one point. I am not familiar with these kinds of files starting with .com, but I think this is the place the wallpaper files are stored. Hope that helps.

Having a peculiar problem and I havent been able to find a thread with an answer. I've been running the AOSP builds with no problem. Went to flash the new Punisher ROM - flashed fine, but been having a problem linking my phone with my google account. I enter my credentials and I always receive an error about an unreliable data connection and I can not sign in. This happens both on 3G and WiFi. So I try Velocity, same thing. So I try stock ROM, same thing. I go back to AOSP builds and it signs in flawlessly. I've tried every permutation I can think of but it never works, except in AOSP. Ideas anyone?
 
Ok, the damndest thing. I found a backup made in TB of the CheckIn Service that I made when I had the original out-of-the-box stock rom and restored it, then rebooted. Now it let me sign in successfully.Market crashes on open tho. Still curious as to why this might have happened?

The default wallpapers? There stored within the framework. You could just create a folder labled "wallpaper" in your microSD card.

Did you format EVERYTHING before flashing the new ROM's?

Is this with the default marketplace? Trying installing a newer one, if that doesnt work, install the absolute latest 2.2 one. If all else fails re-flash your ROM.
