Root Ask question's here (Dont flood the root topic, please)

Is this with the default marketplace? Trying installing a newer one, if that doesnt work, install the absolute latest 2.2 one. If all else fails re-flash your ROM.

I've reflashed SEVERAL times, wiping data, cache and dalvik before each. Latest market too.

Guys if you have any questions dont post in root topic, post them here.

Thanks.

Well i have rooted b4 but i just had to get a new phone shipped to me because my last one got wet. but for some odd reason when i try to root using universal Androot, it goes through all of the normal procedures but then it says "Failed ! No---Fu goo---"
can anyone help me?

i have just rooted my 4 day old ally using z4root. then i backed up the stock rom and flashed velocity 0.3 with rom manager. everything went well. but now i keep getting asked to update. i know that im not supposed to so i dont but is there anyway to stop it? also, before i switched roms, i had a picture of my kids i took with the phone that i used for my wallpaper. and at some point i formatted the sdcard and lost all the pictures i had taken but the picture was still on the wallpaper. i have looked for it in astro but cant find it. anyone know where i could find it? its not a big deal but i know its still on there cause i had to flash back to stock to bring back my contact list and it was still the wallpaper. thanks!

I'm a super noob at this, so i'lll explain the best I can. I rooted the ally with UniversalAndroot before the recent OTA or whatever update. Then I updated the ally while rooted. I tried using Barnacle, and it said it couldn't getSU. On a side note the problem started when I updated barnacle, and it didn't work, which is w hy I chose to update the ally in case it would fix Barnacle. So I then update to 2.1update1 (vs740zvc), and Barnacle still couldn't get SU. I tried to reroot with androot and also z4root, with no change. I just want my wifi back for xbox live, help please!

Edit1: btw I'm not dumb, just not familiar with all the slang and abbreviations here. I'm also 100% sure the debug option and the allow 3rd party apps options are both set to where they need to be. The one click root apps just plain don't work. They all say they rooted successfully, but the superuser apps for both androot and ialso z4root don't grant superuser permissions, they either crash (noshufou) or they do nothing ata all when an app requests SU. I've tried numerous combinations of temporary and permanent rooting with both apps to no avail.

Open terminal simulator - type "su", hit enter, type "ota -d" will disable updates

The picture is saved in the system for the duration its used, cant be retrieved with out dangerous maneuvers into system files.

WIth z4root, UN root the phone, power cycle then go back to z4root and reroot - should work then - if not let me know and we will get your root back with ADB SHELL

I hate to be blonde but could you clarify a few things for me? I'm fixing to try Velocity 0.4 & want to do a CLEAN & FRESH go of it. I've been using CWM during my 3 months of learning with my 1st smartphone(LG Ally:)), but have come to understand that Amon-Ra is the better way to go.

1. If I understand correctly I can use CWM to flash Amon-ra (Aloha) recovery 1.2.5 then do the send, menu, end thing & that will boot me into Amon-Ra instead of CWM?

2. If above is correct I could then proceed with the Amon-Ra way of flashing etc, & not have a need to use CWM for these tasks anymore?

3. How can I totally wipe out my SD Card (ext's and ALL) to start from scratch again. I run windows vista if that makes a difference in your advice.

4. Now feel free to bash me for asking what I'm sure is obvious to more knowledgeable people!

I tried to search for Sd card information today. I have the stock card which is class 4, I was looking at the class 10 cards and wasn't sure if going for a 16 Gb card would be worth the investment or should i just stick with the 4gb card. I don't have a lot of music on my phone and I believe the biggest partition i can place on my card for apps is 512mb, correct? So i guess my question would be class 6 or class 10 for best performance. I know you can move your cache and dalvik to the SD card so this is why i am asking. Currently I am using Punisher and thinking about velocity.

Thanks

Ok I got my new class 10 sd card today for my Ally. I am using punisher rom and using clockwork rom manager. I go into clockwork and want o partition my sd card , not worried about info on it. So i set the ext partition to 512 since tha tis the biggest i can get for that partition for apps. Now when I choose th swap file size I figured i would do 128 mg it is a 4gb card and don't plan on filling the card up with a lot of extras but when rom manager wants to reboot the phone it hangs on the LG screen and goes no farther. I first tried a 256 swap , I thought for best, didn't load on that either. Pulled battery and now on the 128 and still hanging. Need some advice on how I should proceed.

Thanks

*Edit* It seems that I can't reboot into recovery mode. I am trying to reflash Punisher to make sure everything is where it should be before I try to reformat my SD card and put apps back on there. Any ideas?

thanks again

I recently had to switch to Amon-RA Recovery from ClockworkMod, due to issues I had with ROM Mgr and Velocity 0.4. You might consider trying out Amon-RA Recovery. Lots of members recommend it.

Where Universal Androot and asroot2 manual method failed, z4root was a resounding success. Thank you all for this highly informative thread.

I was looking for an application that makes it easier to uninstall stock apps I don't want. In the past, I had visit the filesystem and delete the .apk files manually.

I found Root Uninstaller by Android Text [1]. It looked like exactly what I needed only it wouldn't successfully uninstall anything. It said it worked, but the little buggers kept re-appearing.

Silly user, I forgot to mount /system as rw instead of r/o. I used Root Explorer by Speed Software [2] to make that easy. No mount -o remount,rw from the terminal needed.

Now my phone has no unnecessary bloatware!

ok, I'm a little embarrassed, a lot actually. For some stupid reason I got the stupid idea in my head that it would be a good idea to go back to stock (from a backup) and do a factory restore and wait for FroYo. When I was done with the restore it said there was an update available so I installed it hoping it was the official Froyo (I know, I'm that stupid). Naturally, it just happens to not be froyo and in the process of updating I lost root. I've tried everything, Androot, z4root, and of course ADB. Originally I rooted with ADB so I know I can, but when I try to now I get this

$ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/2423/fd/3

and it stays right here for ever. Any ideas?

Is anyone having issues with the phandroid app? Since upgrading to 2.2.1 I've had some issues especially when browsing recnt favorites.

IIRC the manual root method does not work with the newer update... ZVC or somesuch. z4root will fail sometimes more than once before it works, its a little tricky.

Yes, when I open a forum up the posts are all out of order date wise. I have to sort the things every time. Kind of annoying.

Ok, so here's probably another goof ball question but I'm gonna ask it just the same. If I had another device that wasn't activated on a Verizon acct., could I still play with the rest of the device (without phone/txt & 3G of course) if I connected to the internet using only WiFi? Would the Android portion still function normally, apps, gps, market, etc?

i have an ally, successful root with Z4, and running velocity V4. and i love it!!! my question is this. my wife has a vx11000 (not a smartphone) is there a way to root this phone or does rooting only work on smartphones?

i lost root after update 2.1.1 and froyo 2.2 superuser still installed, universal androot says rooted, and i cant root or unroot. when i plug in my phone via usb and debugged, can install android adb as well. tried one click, z4root, and tried to remove superuser via terminal emulator....nothing.

Have you tried to flash back to a point before the update?

Questions 1 and two are correct, in fact its recommended to use ra for velocity .4

Question3: you can format your sd card with windows but because android is a linux system be sure to format with NTFS file system which is read by both windows and linux
