AT&T buying Tmobile?

B2L

Android Expert
I just read an article on engadget stating that AT&T agreed to buy Tmobile for 39 billion dollars. So what does everyone think? Will it be for the better or worse? When I had AT&T their customer service sucked and their 3G speeds were slow as hell. Plus they are more expensive, it looks like I might end up going to sprint depending on how everything works out.

They say it will take a year for everything to go through.

I read that a couple hours ago. I think it sucks. I just switched to Tmobile right before the Nexus S was released and I have been loving their customer service and pricing. Hopefully AT&T is better than they were a couple years ago when I had them.

And... If I can't keep unlimited data I won't think twice about leaving. I will be going straight to Sprint. I am guessing Sprint will be the new home of the Nexus line anyways

ATT is really good now in customer service and signal. I'm also positive they will allow grandfather plans as they did when they bought Cingular

How do you suppose they'll integrate T-Mobile's AWS network with their 850/1800 MHz network? Think they'll adopt the 2100MHz band from T-Mobile exclusively? I could see that killing signal quality in low visibility places...

I think the aws will be used for 4G along with At&t 700 mhz which it has a huge amount while the rest of tmobile spectrum will be used to continuously strengthen 3G

I'm just thinking in terms of current phones. None are compatible with each other's network, and as they slowly get people to buy AT&T phones, switching from T-Mobile phones, maintaining T-Mobiles network will just become a huge money pit. And then you have phones like the Vibrant 4G and Optimus 2X that are brand new and may not even be supported next year.

Your not thinking it through at all. They won't do that if you go read on ATT website it explains it. The phones will be Pentaband and utilize all the spectrum

That's just great!!! I left that ****ed up AT&T to go to Tmo. AT&T sucks here in SoCal. Bad service, slow, dropped calls, crappy phones. Now I get them all over again. I'm sure they will ruin Tmo and get rid of unlimited data and raise the prices. **** AT&T!!!
I'll got to Virgin if I leave Tmo

the service you have with tmobile will stay the same as now att will own the spectrum your service is on so att wont suck in socal anymore

I don't really give a rats ass about AT&T having better service, it's the damage they will do to Tmobile, not just in poor cell service but with customer service and pricing, as well. Cingular was a good cell service until AT&T got it, I was with them for many years. Just like everything AT&T touches the price goes up and the service gets bad. Their bottom line is profit not service. Tmo will suffer for this purchase, that's a guaranty.

It will suck for those of us on even more plus plans since we have no contract. I am thinking about switching to simple mobile since they use tmobiles network. But that just might disappear when at&t takes over. I am sick of paying what the carriers want. Everyone has to admit that you pay way too much for what you actually get. The only companies with decent prices are virgin mobile, boost, cricket, straight talk, and simple. I'm so sick of paying $90 per line every month. And you know that is just going to get higher with at&t.

Thats cool that your psychic whats the 6 winning lotto numbers? I also have been a customer since pre cingular days when it was AT&T. If you actually did research and looked at facts, the service will improve dramatically, better speeds, coverage, spectrum penetration and a almost instant rollout of LTE, AT&T customer service has gotten much much better and I'm sure they will roll in Tmobile service. No need to through a tantrum its unbecoming

Ya know for someone that's NOT on Tmobile and doesn't have a Nexus S you seem to think you know it all. I don't have to be psychic to see what AT&T has done many times before, you'd be blind not to already know. Humm, let's see... Long distance service, local phone service, former cell service, broadband service, cable TV service, current cell service. Every one has gotten worse and the prices raised over and over.
You must work for AT&T or you live under a rock.

I was on tmobile and had a Nexus S and I also have had an active line with AT&T since they were AT&T pre cingular. My service on that line has only gotten better. The reality is this I looked at all the evidence and this is the situation. IT MAKES SENSE! Tmobile has been shopped around for the last 5 years and if you followed the financials like I do, you would see that if they didnt sell soon Duetch telecom was gonna close up shop.So it was either now or when the shut everything down and AT&T would buy them for 50 cents. Now that AT&T purchased them the spectrum that isnt there for tmobile to EVER get 4G will be there and those 34 million will now be able to have LTE one day, both companies signal will increase easily by 30% and get faster and better.
If you dislike this there are options, Simple mobile, Metro PCs, Virgin, boost, cricket, Sprint, verizon etc etc

And this addresses the issue of higher prices, bad customer service, more dropped calls, no unlimited data plans HOW?
Doesn't AT&T have the worst customer service according to JD Powers? Didn't AT&T stop unlimited data plans? Wasn't that AT&T that sold iPhones, for years, that wouldn't send and receive pics, until they got sued? AT&T has the most dropped calls, the most dead spots and the worst phones. And that's just their cell service. In the last year my home phone has gone from $19 a month to nearly $50 a month since AT&T took over from SBC. I've been calling them for over a month to shut it off and no one answers the "shut off" line.. Does that remind anyone of AOL???
Make no mistake, AT&T will ruin Tmobile. It might take a year or two but they will ruin it.
I'm sure everyone in the Nexus S / Tmobile forum sleeps better now knowing your personal service on AT&T has gotten better. But this has nothing to do with HTC or an AT&T contract.
There is not ONE company that AT&T acquired that has gotten better or more cost effective. Ray Charles could see that!
You're like the chicken that voted for Colonel Sander.

The iphone with no sms/mms had nothing to do with AT&T that was all apple not giving the iphone that functionality because they wanted people to use email. So please dont rewrite history. Your phone plan is a prime example, when a company such as SBc or tmobile keeps pricing so low there is no money in the coffers in the end what happens? You either go out of business or someone buys you out. You can tout tmobile customer service all you want but it obviously wasnt that great because even with the awards they couldnt hold customers and bled money like a hemophiliac, hence the sale. Your rant about the most dropped calls, worst phones is subjective and is not fact. There are many people 95 million that are on AT&T and if it was as bad as you make it they would be the ones with 34 million getting assimilated. Just like the verizon iphone was gonna take so many people away from AT&T because their service was so much better, yea i saw that. I see people leaving verizon to go back to AT&T, look at the engadget article about that. So before you call me the chicken who voted for Sanders. Why dont you put the kool-aid down and like i said you have options go pick whats best for you

Coming from AT&T, I can personally attest at just how bad it is. They loved trying to charge me for services I never used or even signed up for. They had a habit of giving my lines some free service for a month (without telling me or even giving me the choice) and then when I didn't cancel that service that I didn't know about at the end of the billing period, they would charge me for it from then on. Calling them up to take care of the overcharges was a nightmare every time. On several occasions, they would just hang up on me when I refused to admit to the charges.

Network coverage was easily as bad, and I live in a fairly metropolitan area (San Francisco Bay Area). It wasn't unusual for me to miss calls and then receive a voicemail notification some hours later, without the phone ever having rang. Same with text messages.

The final straw was when they decided to shut off their 2G network in my area, rendering my 2G Smartphone useless. They let me trade in my old 2G phone for a "comparable" 3G phone. But by that, they meant I could trade in my $500 Smartphone for some shitty feature phone.

I was on a grandfathered plan, significantly cheaper than any of their other plans, which was the only thing keeping me with AT&T, but after all that, I decided to say screw it and switched to T-Mobile and pay an additional $5 per month.

and now everything you love about tmobile in san Francisco will stay the same just be called AT&T next year

I'm not really certain how it all works, but from my understanding, our phones only connect to Tmobile's cell towers? So for some people, if they live on the edge of the cell towers reach, they will get crappy reception. But if AT&T and T-mobile cell towers become shared and could be accessed all at the same time, then wouldn't reception improve overall?

Only thing I don't like about this merger is how AT&T caps their 3g/4g. Though I don't necessarily hit the cap (I use maybe 1-2GB a month), I just don't like to know it's there.
