Atrix vs Inspire

Out of curiosity, what issues that single-cores won't have?

There is _no_ advantage to a single core over a dual core and a dual core can potentially have more efficient power usage, better performance, etc.

When (assuming vs. if :) ) the OS is updated to use dual cores, many apps are already multi-threaded, so then the OS can schedule tasks across the multiple cores, also, schedule multiple single threads from many tasks across multiple cores.

At worst case, you're running an advanced, single core CPU that exceeds the speeds of many current CPU options (and has an incredibly fast GPU), at best case you get a massive performance boost for ALL computing chores from browsing, to video, to gaming, to UI, etc.

If the dual cores made the phone significantly more expensive, I'd say it's a trade of potential performance vs. price, but based on current information, the Atrix is going to be right in line with single core phones.

I totally agree. Some people keep using the fact that Froyo can't utilize a dual core to the fullest, but I have learned from buying technical devices over the years that as long as the price point is right, it is always best to buy the most advanced hardware available. There is plenty of room for Motorola to upgrade this phone over time to bring it to it's fullest potential. Gingerbread? Honeycomb? And with it only being $150 with contract, it's an amazing value.

This phone has the hardware of the future, and it will continue to grow.

The Inspire, which is being release at the same time, is based on hardware that has been available in other parts of the world for 6 months. It's a "catch up" phone for ATT and HTC for only $50 less. Don't get me wrong - I believe HTC is the best out there for Android and can't wait to get one eventually... but this first effort isn't good enough.

I can't wait to see what mwc and ctia bring. I get an upgrade in nov so :-)

Yep. Desire HD/Inspire has NOTHING on ATRIX!! Not even worth comparing!!;)

I'm just saying... the better phone is the Atrix 4G. Clear cut. For most people on AT&T it will be... especially looking at these rumored prices.

I think a 4" display is perfect for someone like me so I'm not going to be picky about the screen size anyway.

While this is all perfectly technically true, my personal experience with non-optimized extra cores goes something like this.

Non-optimized:

Within a single app - no advantage
Running multiple apps - "some advantage"
Boot up and shut down - "some advantage"
Switching into and out of various tasks..."some advantage" (or in this case it will be pretty much instantaneous.
Gaming performance or the odd software that is written to utilize multi-cores (especially media (flash videos, games, input/output situations) - huge advantage.

What i am saying here is that even non-optimized dual core will end up being a (to get VERY technical here_) "tick or two" faster than a single core running the same software. I can't explain this..but it is something i have noticed over the years. It wont be the unleashing of performance it COULD be until the software plays catch up but it will be a tad faster guaranteed. (clock for clock)

If this goes anything like it did on the PC world...we will be 2 or 3 generations into the multi-core chips on phones before we wake up one day and see the "wow" factor as the potential these things have come to fruition...then we will look back and wonder how we ever got anything done without multi-cores.

The first dual core intel and AMD chips did virtually NOTHING for xp/vista in the early days. Only in around the 3rd iteration of these chips with full 64bit vista and 64bit multi-core threaded software did the chips really start to earn their badges of honor. (although there was the odd game/number crunching/office app/media encoding software that utilized the cores way before that).

Now days....we can't even IMAGINE going back to single core chips to accomplish what a quad core I7chip can do, and so it will be on the phones one day as well.

But this will most likely not be the case (please don't shoot me) for the early ones like the Atrix.

Dollar for Dollar The Atrix definately wins. Being 30% more expensive...id say its probably a tie (bang for buck wise) this go around. Factoring in Motorola and blur combined with being locked.... Well i just don't know. The Jury is out.

We will have to see the final reviews before that can be decided (value wise).

I think a good analogy would be that the Inspire is kind of the Apple (Highly polished UI, established Hardware, should be a great user out of the box-well tested and mostly bug free) while the Atrix is kind of the enthusiast performance PC (better specs, less fluid software with the potential of having a bug or two here and there, will most likely will require some tinkering, work and patience from the owner before its where it ought to be (with the potential for a nice pay off for the effort).

very well said :)

really why because of dual cores? there are many things that make this phone crappy without its webtop dock.

locked boot
motoblur
no sideloading
gonna have no full ROMs
Only a 5mp camera
plasticky cheap body

so whats left dual cores? That really isnt gonna make many people buy this all the other stuff added to the value now big whoop

I would say the dual-core, 1gb DDR ram, larger battery, and the high-res screen are more important than the things you listed, but that's just my opinion. Everyone values things differently.

so whats left dual cores?

- Dual core
- 1gb Ram (a game changer speed wise)
- 1930mAh battery (a game changer battery wise)
- 4g HSPA+
- 4 inch QHD display

As for the camera being "only 5mp". Apples iPhone 4 has already shown that more mp doesn't improve picture quality.

As for the locked bootloader. Most people aren't hackers and buy the phone for the phone itself.

Just because your personally dissapointed about the accessory pricing doesn't mean this isn't the best phone out there. Period.

Cosign on posts 1 and 2

Post 3, no one is bashing the phone per se, but several are saying they aren't as excited and will look for a different phone because of the price point of the dock. Which is funny, because the dock won't even be possible with other phones.

And the post I quoted, how many people do you think your first 4 reasons actually applies to? 3% of the users? 5%? And the IP4 "only" has a 5mp camera and it's shown to be better than other 8mp units on the market. 5 will be just fine, I'm sure.

And "just" dual cores? How bout the 1g of ram? That's not a huge positive? How many other phones on the market share that feature?

The phone, all by itself, seems to be a pretty awesome unit. If the leaked info is true about the docks price, yeah, that's a shame. I have no intentions of getting it anyway.

locked boot - if the phone runs like it should I won't need custom roms

motoblur - i don't see what all the hate is about it's not that bad

no sideloading - there are ways around this even without rooting

gonna have no full ROMs - again if the phone runs like it should I wouldn't need them

Only a 5mp camera - it's not the mp that matter it's the lens. The iPhone 4 has a 5 mp camera and takes pics and video just as good if not better than any 8 mp phone camera.

plasticky cheap body - I'll wait till I hold it to voice an opinion on this.

Now the cons for the Inspire.

No dual core
No ffc
Screen res isn't as good
no notification light
only a 1230mAh battery
not as much RAM

It depends on what each person wants.

screen wont be much better believe me read some reviews of the Desire HD and now the Inspire the SuperLCD with that size and pretty good resolution look amazing. Inspire 780 MB DDR ram the Atrix 1Gb not really a big difference especially when froyo utilizes only 512MB. The battery life i believe will be relative i think the inspire will make it through a day easily and the atrix maybe two but in the end if you charge it every night or every other it doesnt matter. As long as you can make it through your day your good. So in the end the dual core is the only real plus and if your not using the webtop or playing excessive graphically intense games its not needed ether

Is the ram on the Inspire DDR? I hadn't read that. Not questioning you, just wondering.

I still think 9-12 months from now, dual-core will be a nice thing to have. It's good that ATT is getting lots of android phones this year though, because obviously everyone has different wants and needs.

its a possibility yes the ram i have to double check on if its DDR
