Root [Avail] [Guide] Partition SD Card (for more user storage)

WARNING!
THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING!
(SD CARD AND YOUR CURRENT ROM)

I am going to explain how to partition your sdcard for more user app memory..
This will give you about 1GB of storage to store more apps on!

1. Backup everything from your sd card and apps
(this will format your sd card and apps)

2. Boot into clockworkmod

3. Go to advance

4. - Partition SD Card

5. - 1024M (1GB)
(recommended for smaller sd cards)

6. - 0M

After this step the phone will just sit there for a while just leave it alone and it will say done when it's done!

Important!
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition

Reboot your phone/ or install a custom rom (your choice)

Download Link2SD from the market

Run Link2SD and a thing should pop and click on ext2 then reboot the phone..

Hint:
If you want all of your apps to your sd card then go into Link2SD click setting, and make sure Auto link is checked.


Note:
I am using a 16GB Class 10 sd card so I set my partition to 2GB instead of 1GB!

I am always running short of Internal Memory. Sometimes I only have 1 MB or two free. Is there a way to clean it up. I see that you have 113 MB free. That is a lot of free. :hmmmm:

and go to settings->applications->manage applications,then click on each one and if there is an option "move to sd card" click it.Also,whenever you download new app to your phone,this app will ask you to move it to sd card if possible.You will get much more free internal memory. ;)
 
At around 113 apps, my Dalvik gets too full, resulting in no internal memory, is there any way around this? I tried pushing it to the system partition, the dev partition and the sd card, resulting in a "useless" phone. I also tried pushing it to the internal cache partition, which was too small.
 
This is exactly what I want to do, there is no room for any apps on this avail. I rooted using the number codes, and also turned off Carrier IQ same way. Installed superuser, and a 32 gb class 4 card. I want to follow these instructions to get more space for apps, but in my reading (and no knowledge of ClockWorkMod) Do I use the CWM from the app store to perform this change, or do I need to follow the instructions on the thread

Also, how do you backup as per instruction 1?

I installed CWM and hit the format SD option, it asked for phone type but zte990/avail was not on list, So I stopped and read more and got more confused. I also tried to make a backup, again, same questions got me to stop. Is that why I need the other (anthony) version? Or am I missing something more basic?

While new to cell phones, I do understand the linux command line. So I feel comfortable tackling this.

I did the dialer number to root my phone. After i installed CWM I did the Partition SD Card in CWM. It never asked me for my phone. So i really dont know what to tell ya on this. I know this is not the right way to do things but. I have never backed up my phone in CWM. After i installed 1.2 and 1.3. I did the Tcard flash back to stock from zteusa web site. Then rooted back with the dialer and all the other great things along with root. I liked 1.2 but there was somthing wrong with the radio signal. I didnt have a signal at home. I live out past the sticks. So im just rooted and running the OC and the SD card partitioned. I have a cheap 8gb card in my phone and I 1/2 the card 4gb for storage. I allso did my wifes phone the same way.
 
It says"you must have clockworkmod recovery installed before continuing...install the recovery through ROM manager first" I press install, then the list comes up.
 
Or you can take a new sd card and use windows partition tool to create partition, pop it in, download you link2sd and bang, you now have usable partition.
Go to xda and search "partition sd card". Link to download wpt and full instructions. Takes about 3 minutes. No wipe, no nothing. Just need a empty card. Hope this helps.

I guess I am confused as to the value of this. I already move all of my apps to my SD card using Titanium Backup as it is. I have 103MB free, with about 54 user apps installed.

How would creating another partition on my SD card actually benefit me in any way?

Sounds like TB is working out well for you. I didn't know it had that capability.

Link2SD moves the apk, dalvic cache and library files to the partition, leaving the private data in its original location.
I don't know how TB handles the moving process.

Best part of all, Link2SD is free.
 
Titanium Backup allows you to change any app from a user app to a system app, and vice versa. It also allows you to move apps to the SD card that are not intended on being able to be moved there.

I managed to get Google Maps down to a minimum of 5.16MB, the Google Play Store down to about 1.54MB, Go Launcher Ex (newest version) is about 2.79MB, etc.

I guess I am still unclear on the benefits of having that partition. Are you saying that having that partition would make all of my apps install exclusively to the SD card, and to have none of its data actually on the phone's internal memory? If so, I need to do this yesterday.

Link2SD also does this.

No, I'm not saying that. The private data remains where it was originally. The Link2SD app also remains, and will not move out of the internal app space.
I also kept Google Play and Superuser on internal just to be safe.

IF TB is working that well for you, I wouldn't bother changing. I just happened to try Link2SD and it works well for me.

Note:
Link2SD does not do backup/restore.
I use an older version of TB for that.
 
Already halfway through the process now. Meh. If it doesn't do what I want it to, I will just revert back, I suppose. I thought that perhaps this method would provide me with more internal memory, but if I am already doing what this does, manually, I can see that there would be little point in it.

Yeah, after a bit more testing, turns out I was correct. The method I am already using by manually moving apps to the SD card using TiBu does precisely what this process does, except that I have to individually move each new app, clear the Dalvik Cache and clear my regular cache files each time.

But, considering that I don't really install THAT many apps, and I greedily hoard every kilobyte of memory space that I have on my phone's internal memory, I should be fine doing it the hard way, for now.
 
So I think I correctly followed the instructionsp, just curious how I will know if it worked? Right now I show 162.5MB total for internal and 908.11MB total for SD card. I guess the internal increased a little, but not much. SD card is clearly smaller (about half I think? Can't remember what it originally showed). It just seems I'm missing quite a chunk somewhere?
 
How do I get a back-up of apps installed to ext2 partition?
CWM / Nandroid won't do it.

can I trust that a TiBU got them all?
