Root Bad reception 3g/4g

so I've had the evo for a while now, 6 months or somthing like that, and i justr can't seem to pull down the data that some tethering apps promise or even just on the phone itself, I used to use easy tether and that says it can go up to 1gb, pdanet dosent say what its connection rate is anymore and i beleive it used to say 11mps, now keep in mind i live right next to 2 towers, both less than half a mile from my house. i'm only getting on average 3 bars and 5 bars in very specific spots, like laying down on the couch with it held up in the air pointed at the window, I do not have a regular internet connection to get a repeater, nor do i have the money for it. is there anything i can do to increase signal or download/upload rate?

Your signal and data speed aren't exactly related. I can have no signal and still pull 1m down. Grab speed test.net from the market and see what you get. Sprint average is 540 k. Let us know what ya get. We can help with streaming and maybe with 3g speed, if it still sucks we can look into other prls if ya want.

Bars are cell signal strength ....they have absolutely nothing to do with network quality. Have you used any speed testing app or website to get a round about reading from that location?


It is plausible that those two towers are experiencing a 3g outage.

I would try running some speed tests from that location.....then some from other locations around town. Basically let's try and count out the fact that it may just be a 3g outage

according to speedtest.nets app im running at 171kbs down 520 kbs up and 525ms, theres a 4th number that just says 520kbs

Well run a few times and get an average but that is pretty shitty 3g. Follow the steps in the link in mr. ed's profile to do a streaming fix and a 3g fix and then test again. If still no luck report back and we can go further.

so just update the prl? and i've run a few more tests and its pretty much the same, low all across the board. I am rooted so do i need to do anything special to update my prl?

yup...that's not 3g...thats 1x. technically 3g is 600kbps+ but many areas are 300-500

the fact that you are getting 3g upload speeds points to it being a bad tower or data profile

but if those results are consistent they are signs of tower outage, bad data profile, or a a defective 3g radio

do some more tests, do some 5-10 miles away as well (different towers)

well im not pulling megabits yet but it is considerably better now after using mr. eds prl update method
