Baseball 2023

Pitch clock, runner starting on 2nd base. A few people complain about something and it's always the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.

So what are they going to do if all of the fixes don't increase attendance? Maybe they should look at economics. Average ticket price in 2022 was $35.92. The average cost for a family of four attending a MLB game was $204.76 in 2022

I lack the time right now, but it would be interesting to see a graph of the inflated ticket prices and crowd attendance. The pricing on all levels of sports is a put off to me. Paying to watch my son compete in high school sports rubbed me wrong. The pricing of watching a minor league game in our new mega million dollar complex eliminated me as a spectator. To drive across the state to pay to park and pay to watch is a major expense for entertainment. It has even evolved to be an investment to follow the sport on TV. It's not just MLB but holds true for the NFL and NBA. Major leagues = major dollars. Has increased pricing impacted the other major sports as much baseball? That's a big question. I haven't seen the other sports making game changing rules to their games.

I didn't really mind the shift. A wise defense anticipates a batter's trend and defends accordingly is just smart ball. It forced batters to elevate their game. Eliminating the shift simply added to the offense which I guess is deemed more entertaining. The player on second base in extra innings is only in place to shorten the game. It's not baseball and was implemented to appease the TV gods. The fan in the stands love extra innings... at least I always enjoyed them.

Shift was fine, no runner for extra innings was fine. What I think the best move was the pitch clock, it eliminated the sometimes ridiculous waste of time from both the pitcher and batter (it may need to be tweaked a little still). I don't like the current limiting throws over to first base but it is something that had/has to be dealt with. It's an integral part of the game but could easily get out of control. I like mound visit limits. I like that you can't change pitchers for every batter.

They've made a lot of changes over the past few years, mostly good ones. They probably aren't going to really help fill the stands though.

Next up is blackout rules :D

I like the pitch clock too Clem. A little of the plate / pitcher antics goes a long ways and adds nothing to the quality of the game. It has always gone on but has gotten out of hand the last couple of years. It just distracts from the game. I don't like the the limiting of throws to first. A good pitcher has a good move to first and will catch a base runner if they aren't on their toes. I've also seen the bad throw or the missed catch that gets that base runner to second. Hell, that's all good ball IMO. The limited mound visits and pitching changes I like a lot. I'd even enjoy a smaller bull pin / less pitching staff. I played ball until I was out of high school and the teams I played on had less players than the majors have pitchers. It's far too many pitchers IMO. Back in the day, my son's team won the 18 year old world series because the team they faced in the final game had used up all of their pitchers to get to the finals. That's how it should be.

The throws to first. I don't think they should be as limited as they are right now, I wasn't clear. They should be limited but still allow a decent number, no idea what that would be but again I think it was abused a lot. It's a huge part of the game and has to stay as a real tool the pitcher can use - at a higher allowance but not endless.

What stays and what goes for division/world series, I thought I read something a while back that some things might be relaxed but don't find anything now - did I make that up?

Here's what's next. Make it like football

Flip a coin for who takes the field first
Two 30 minute half's divided into 15 minute quarters.
7 points for a home run
Whoever is ahead after 60 minutes wins. Anything over 60 minutes is too boring.
No more long drawn out 7 game World Series, have a one game Baseball SuperBowl,

Trapezoid, OT (3 on 3), shootouts (there's nothing wrong with tie games!) and so much more, they broke it for high scoring action instead of real hockey.
actually like them. the only thing that i miss is is having enforcers and fighting. i love hockey fights. you do not see much of those these days.

as for baseball, i do enjoy a much faster paced games. they cut the games by 30 minutes or so.
