Help Battery Draining Quickly

A factory reset might fix things (back up everything important first).
Lollipop was quite a big update and usually after a big update, when wonky stuff happens, starting from scratch again helps :thumbsupdroid:
I really don't want to reset the phone and reset all the apps, etc (such a pain in the @$$). I have have several updates and never had to reset the phone (granted, this was a big update). I have seen several posts that didn't have success after a reset, and none that have (maybe they just didn't post that it worked).
I had to take the phone out of my pocket yesterday because it felt like it was scorching my leg at 106°F!

I did a factory reset, made no difference at all and a complete waste of my time.

I did like 5 resets trying to get the battery life to last more than 4 hours. It was a total waste of time. I read somewhere that 5.02 suposedly addresses the battery life, but who knows. For now I'm going to run Battery Doctor and hopefully I can squeeze a littel more than 4 hours out of what used to be 20+ hours. We were ripped off I think!

if you turn off data and WiFi when the phone is asleep and you are not using it, the battery life will be greatly extended.

there is no reason for the phone to access the internet if you are not using it.

Battery Doctor is snake oil, see for yourself.

Check out "GSam Battery Monitor"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm

Great app. Tells the most truth possible for a non-rooted phone about where power is really going.

Also, see if you have radio signal issues that you didn't have before sucking your power - it's one of the graph options.

If that's the problem, you may be victim to a corrupted update, either on the download or the install - not terribly common but it happens. If you think that's happened to you, see if a local service center can re-apply the update for you.

Otherwise, look over the power statistics, there are quite a few of them, and GSam has been known to help many track down the problem.

If you're rooted, also get Wakelock Detector.

I have this problem too I only use my phone for 5 mins and it drops 3% I don't really have much apps on it.
I did a factory reset I bought a new battery and still nothing.

I performed the "Wipe Cache Partition" and cleared the cache of my downloaded apps - huge difference! I unplugged my phone at 6:30 this morning and right now at 9 pm I have 68% battery. And it is not hot.

Well, I wiped my cache partition, helped a bit and also picked up Cache Cleaner which is also helping. I did notice Battery Doc is a glorified task killer. Gonna ditch that since I have Battery Doc telling me I have 17 hours left on my battery and the one in settings is telling me 11 hours. 11 is a bit more reasonable, but still a little low

Had the same problem with the latest update, with battery taking an eternity to charge, if plugged in overnight it only got to 70% at best and then also draining lightning fast even without use and WIFI / Bluetooth OFF. I spent a few days wishing I hadn't updated and trying turning app off to improve the battery life but to no avail. Using Battery Doctor I found that the Messenger App (Facebook) was causing using 84% of my battery so was obviously the problem. The usage showed that the app was constantly turning on and off. I initially tried turning the app off but for some reason it kept draining the battery. I have now uninstalled the Messenger App and now my battery is back to its best.

GSAM is nice but sometimes it randomly resets its uptime, so phone doesnt go on charge or gets switched off and the uptime resets back to zero.

Hi bIOforger!

Sorry to hear you're having battery drain problems after your firmware update. If, after a Full Wipe, internal and external storage, and Factory Data Reset and prior to reinstalling your user apps, you are still experiencing a huge battery drain, this could be because of a bad/corrupt firmware download, (it can happen, particularly on OTA updates), and you should take your phone to a Samsung Service point or re-flash the firmware yourself. Nah, not a huge battery drain, phone lasts 2 days with low usage. Theres nothing wrong with my firmware. I've never experienced really bad batt drain, what I'm saying is for me Lollipop is worse on battery life than Kitkat, especially when the screen is in use.

OK... with you now bIOforger. Are you using both Adapt and auto brightness, (see, here), as that is more than bright enough for my use and cuts down on my battery usage for Screen time. much more than KitKat did.

lol look i know you're only trying to help but i'm not a newbie with this phone, yes i use adaptive mode, no i don't use auto brightness as i find it doesnt work to well in certain light, but i always keep the screen brightness as low as i can, which is usually around 15%

Here is some interesting information: –

"To get an in-depth look at Android 5.0’s impact on battery life, GSMArena ran a series of four tests for endurance, talk time, Web browsing and video playback. The tests compared results for each phone with itself – that is, they compared battery life on the previous version of Android (4.4 KitKat) with battery life on Android 5.0.

When it comes to endurance, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has 83 hours of standby time on Lollipop, up 11 hours from the 72 hours of standby time on KitKat. The HTC One (M8) received a six-hour boost from the update, as its standby time rose from 71 hours on KitKat to 77 hours on Lollipop. However, the LG G3 saw its standby time drop six hours, from 69 on KitKat to 63 on Lollipop. The Nexus 5 saw its standby time dip two hours, from 40 hours on KitKat to 38 hours on Lollipop.

What's interesting is the screentime tests are few and far between :) And for the S5 video playback time it "remained the same". I'm pretty sure some apps are still causing unnecessary drain and need to play catchup and need updating. Facebook/messenger have always been culprits which i use alot. Having said that screentime was better under Kitkat.

And i've just read theres a wifi bug in lollipop 5.0 which causes battery drain and was acknowledged and fixed by Google in 5.0.1. Guess what I mostly use wifi :) figures.

You are right, I have no way of knowing a posters competence with a particular device and so therefore I always assume no prior knowledge. I would guess also from this that you have run the standard Samsung sensor test and that was OK and showed no problems.

Well not recently but i did a while ago yea, the phone works fine in all aspects... apart from these lollipop changes lol

Its a hidden test menu,

Open the phone app on your Galaxy S5 and open the dial pad.
Type *#0*#

If you have run that test and everything is showing as OK and you are only on around 15% of full brightness which is very low indeed, too low for my usage, then I am at a loss as to why you should be getting such a huge battery drain from Screen.

The only other thing I would do in your shoes, would be to download and flash your stock Samsung firmware in case you had a corrupt or bad update. Failing that, a trip to a Samsung Service Point would seem in order.

Huh? i don't have a huge battery drain as i said earlier, what i am saying is its worse under Lollipop than it was under Kitkat, especially when the screen is used properly. My screentime is a good 30mins-1 hour less than what it was using kitkat.

If i had a corrupt update wouldnt i be seeing issues all over the place?

Lollipop 5.0 is crap, lets face it. Hopefully 5.0.2 will cure some of these issues, well i know it will.
