Battery Life

N1 screen issues I have to power on and off my phone all day. can some one help because Google or HTC HAVE NOT

You need to explain how the screen is acting up...like does it freeze when you're in the middle of using it? Does it go black?

You'd probably some some better responses in a new thread. Go ahead and start a new one and I'm sure you'll find lots of friendly help. We love the Nexus One. :)

He still needs to give us a better explanation of how the screen is acting up though :/

No, that's not the point.

After upgrading to Froyo, the battery life has been tremendously decreased compared to what it was on Eclair. That's the problem, and we can do something to solve this problem - by sharing our experiences!

In my case, N1 with Froyo can run only just a little more than 12 hours with full charge. (No heavy use. Just a few minutes of calls and 20~30 mins of web surfing, that's all)

I agree, it has been less. However, the time you're stating (little more than 12 hours), is what I get, and I use it to listen to music all day at work.

@Drhyde, how much talk-time are you putting on that thing?

My battery life is great, as long as I'm not using it as a phone (voice calls).

My Nexus is on its way to HTC, I called them back and told them that I sent it in for the dust issue but that I had some more problems I was worried about, they said that no matter the reason I'm sending it in, that they will inspect every aspect of the phone including any power issues.

I hope they are being honest and not giving me the run-around. On any note, I've still got my fingers crossed, CROSSED, crossed.

I can't cite any references right now, but the longest I'm using on the phone is no longer than 30 minutes a call. I admit my talk time isn't significant, but I do a lot of 3G web browsing now (after adding data plan) plus listening to music and all around screwing around with my phone during the day since I like to play with the settings. I can check up on the battery one day to see what the talk time looks like. I'll post soon on it.

hello all,

i purchased a nexus one on Ebay and it came with 2 batteries, one OEM and one knockoff. the only difference in the batteries is the color of the "htc innovation" on the front of the battery. for all of you who only have the OEM battery; What color is the "htc innovation"? thanks in advance

Picked up a tip on XDA Devs.

Set your radio to GSM Auto (PRL), should see an increase as it relies on a list from the carrier to know when you're in a 3G area rather than constantly scanning for it.

Does this not imply a lack of network quality? Or am I getting protocols and networks mixed up? I thought GSM was 2G speed?

Right well I've had my N1 for about a week now and have given it one FULL charge last night. I had been giving it a few smaller usb charges whilst at work and such to keep me running.

I had it on charge all night last night and took it off at around 7:30am this morning. As of now (12:10pm) it's on 87%. That's with about 5 texts being sent, 5mins spent changing wallpaper. my POP email being checked at least once, and around 10minutes of browsing and downloading.

This suggest that with light usage at an average of around 5% an hour (at worst) I should get a fair whack out of this charge.

I'll update however . I'd love to think that with a few more full charges, it will realise it's potential.

No it doesn't effect 3g speed, you still have 3g with this setting. The title is just misleading for some reason. But changing to this greatly improved my battery life. It makes standby use much better.

Mine is working pretty good with Nexus because I m also using gtalk and used to do surfing for an 1 hour almost with listening songs on Internet radio and the battery gets discharged after 2 or 3 hours.

Just a quick update. Been through a few charges now since I had the N1. Have to say battery life has increased significantly - easily get through a day with moderate use.

* No Live Wallpaper
* Background Sync and Always Sync on
* Manual Brightness - 12%

Well a little testing so far with 2.2, I talked to my brother for about an hour and went from 67% to 62%. This was with 3G on, Sync on, Auto-Brightness on, and Live Wallpaper and Wifi off. I've went back through a lot of my apps and replaced many with ones that are either smaller in size or more power efficient. I've come to believe that 2.2 is much better in power management and it is the apps that are to blame in most instances.

WOW...that's amazing!!! Oh if I get that kind of battery life for talking...I simply cannot wait for 2.2 now!!! Right now...I get 4 hours MAX (to almost 0% from full charge). Oh if you still remember, can you share some of those before and after apps? :)

A lot of that is trial and error. Mostly checking my battery use. I tried Barcode Scanner and Shopsavvy. While Shopsavvy has a cleaner interface, I found that it likes to hang around in the background using power when I wasn't using it so I ditched it.

I also have been monitoring certain live wallpapers. Magic Smoke tends to use more CPU than it should, but Pixel Zombies is great on battery provided you don't shove 400 pixels (default at 300 is a good zone). Battery Indicator (not just for widget space) but also is smaller than many other battery programs though probably not the smallest.

I can say one thing for sure. Virtually all weather apps and widgets are horrible power hogs: Weather Channel, weatherbug, etc. I found it's better to simply put a bookmark to the Weather Channel's mobile site with my zip code and be done with it.

I use Mint.com, but I'm thinking of getting rid of it. I either use my bookmarks in the browser or check when I get home. Some may need it, but I don't use it that much. That said, Personal Assistant is a power hog as well that likes to hang in memory for no apparent reason.

A recent widget I purchased, System Info Widget, does drain my power some, but it usually doesn't show any more than 2%. If I see any program in battery use above 3% I tend to have it replaced unless I was just using it a lot.

T-Mobile My Account I believe is another offender that really has no replacement other than going to their site as it hangs in memory. Ebay app does as well though I recall it not being to bad on battery.

I'll try to remember others, but I usually forget about them after I uninstall (such is the mentality of small, free apps). I should also mention that I was in a four bar area when talking to my brother. Lower bars is obviously going to mean more power required to push a signal, but overall I think Froyo handles power management better.

Thanks Drhyde. Same with me; it's all trial and error playing with the apps to find the best ones. Thought I'd get some ideas with apps I might not have tried yet

I don't like barcode scanner because one of its permissions required your personal information (read browser history, bookmarks and read/write contact data. I don't know why it would require this much access to my personal info and with internet permission and I feel the app its collecting my information

I use mini info since its free and I never see it in the battery usage setting. Doesn't have as much info as battery info widget.

For the weather app if you aren't traveling far distances and usually sonny have your GPS on then set a permanent location and have auto refresh off and manually refresh it. And with this it'll barely use the battery.

I just got the phone 3 weeks ago and first couple of day in New york the battery would last a whole day +. Then I flew to Germany and Poland where I bought a new Sim Card with a local phone number, the battery lasted for 2 days with heavy use email, web, and calls. Now I back in Florida and back to 1 day+ on a single charge. I think there is something with the way the cell towers communicate with the phone over in Europe vs. in the States. Has anyone else experienced this.

I know with my previous phone....the iphone 3G/3GS with AT&T I definately noticed this with traveling in different areas within the US.

In the states providers tend to spread there towers out so your phone has to ramp up it's output so the tower can hear them. In Europe they have a better cell infrastructure so phones don't have to ramp up there output power as much. As you have already seen when you have more towers that are closer the battery in your phone lasts a lot longer.

In my area my N1 will last two days with no problem, but if I travel out of my area to some place where the coverage isn't very good my battery will take a major hit.

I just got my second Nexus One last a week ago. And i feel that my battery life is not up to par, I tried calling Tech Support but I did not get a definite answer.

So I measured my usage in the last two days, here's how it's been:

Unplugged at 100% at 10:30AM

40 minutes of 3G voice calls
45 minutes os 3G browsing
5 minutes of WiFi browsing
2 text messages

Brightness at about 25%
WiFi tured on for about 3 hour (not used, just turned on)

No music or video viewing or streaming

at 9:00PM I am sitting at 37%

Any thoughts? Should I push for a warranty replacement?

Thanks for your help.

The battery life does seem a bit low, but not depressingly so. You had the whole phone replaced? Did you consider it might be the battery itself?
