Root Battery Life

I am home now a lot with three batteries, and car charger so little incentive to worry much about battery.

But, I do it out if habit and principle, and a tendency toward having OCD.

I have realized that if I use the phone ALL the time (sad I know, but I do mean ALL the time), with the screen dim, turn off sync and back ground apps, do not allow much automatic updating I can get about 6-7 hours depending upon my signal strength at home. 3g only. No other wifi at this time. Tether uses more, etc. That is pretty much reality, I think, fellas.

With Juice Defender Ultimate in Extreme mode and using it the way a normal well adjusted self actualized non-Aspergers Syndrome (no offense, I love Claire Danes, I mean Temple Grandon) person would and still utilizing the above tricks from the New Optimus method, I can get 18 hours or more easily. Probably a lot more, if I really try.

I run most social media apps from Dolphin HD and set notifications to text or email if possible. Text is preferable.

I was having problems with the battery draining too fast even when I was sleeping. But, this does not happen now. It will hold a charge and use almost no juice when inactive.

But, I still get phone calls and texts. Which is usually a good thing.

As we know, Airplane mode shuts down pretty much everything, unless you manually turn in Wifi. But, if you don't, it uses almost No juice too. But no phone calls or texts.

Gotta stop reading those old psychology textbooks...

I use normal Juice Defender set to balanced and at normal to heavy use I'm getting about 8 hours out of a fully charged battery.

Right after I posted about the Micro USB backup battery packs, I went ahead and ordered the large one.

After a week of playing with it, I really like it. It does what it says it does.

I do feel a bit nervous about holding the phone with the pack attached. I don't want to bend/break the connector. But so far it has been working fine and hasn't bent or anything. It seems pretty secure.

I would gladly recommend it for anyone.

I have the Samsung Prevail with the new Shabbymod .7 which is absolutely awesome.

I just read a review of the phone and it said this.. The device is said to last for 6.50 hours of talk time and 216 hours of standby time, which is pretty good.

Which doesn't even come close to what I get.. It is dying after 8-10 hours of idle time after being full charged should I look into getting a new one. Every time I forget the phone in my pocket and wake up the next morning it is dead... I have chargers at work, home and the car one to avoid it dying but it is just a pain.

I have GPS turned off but I usually leave wireless turned on since it is the only way I can get anything on it when I am home.. Sprint reception kinda sucks down here..

Thanks

My Prevail is "stock", with the March 2012 OTA Android 2.3.6 update.

By combining all of the battery saving tips I have read on Android Forums, and elsewhere, I can get 24 hours per charge with moderate use and up to 48 hours with light use.

I use the "Power Widget" that comes with the Prevail to turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and Synch. I use the free "Data Switch" widget to turn off 3G. I manually turn off "locations" and "Google Maps". I set the screen brightness at about 20% indoors.

The Prevail works fine for phone calls and texts with all of those apps turned off. Two or three times a day, I turn on either Wi-Fi or 3G to download my Gmail and check news headlines and weather. When I am done, I turn them off, and then use the Prevail's Task Manager to do a "level 2" memory clear, which closes any apps running in the background.

Using the Task Manager to do a "level 2" memory clear also makes it possible for apps to open quickly and work rapidly without the Prevail ever "freezing". A "level 2" clear drops RAM use to below 150mb. When the Prevail's RAM use gets above 220mb (due to numerous apps running in the background) the battery drains rapidly, apps are slow to open, and some apps will crash or freeze up.

When I first got my Prevail, my "default" mode was to have all functions turned on, thinking that it would be inconvenient to have to turn on 3G, GPS, and "Google Maps" to use Google Navigation the five or ten minutes a week that is typical for me. And, with all functions turned on, I was lucky to get 12 hours per charge.

So, now I charge at 10 p.m. at night, and 24 hours later, I still have a 40% to 60% charge remaining. All it takes is the willingness to take ten or fifteen seconds to turn on apps only when they are needed and ten or fifteen seconds to turn them back off when you are finished.

One BIG exception: this tips have no impact on what happens when you begin using "Google Navigation" or are watching VEVO videos using 3G. Those high drain functions will run your battery to zero in about two hours. For high drain functions, have your charger handy.

By the way, clearing internal memory is helpful to the Prevail's overall quality of operation. When my internal memory had less than about 20mb free, I was unable to download new apps, and some apps were freezing up because they could not open an adequate size memory cache.

I deleted apps that I don't use every day, uninstalled the updates from the apps that can't be removed, turned off the Google Market's "automatic update" function, and moved every app that can be moved over to the SD card. I now have 60MB of open internal memory, and all of my apps open quickly, and work quickly and well.

Hello and thank you for posting such a detailed account of what you've done for the battery and performance on you're phone.

Would yoo please clarify one thing so no 1 gets your post misunderstood? You posted in the all things root section and you stated that your phone is stock. Is your phone stock or rooted with no other changes ? Thanks

I did not realize this thread was about only rooted Prevails, my Prevail is "stock" with the latest OTA update to the new version of Gingerbread.

This past week, I was able to go precisely seven days on just one charge. My "max life" program has evolved slightly. I use the stock Android power widget to turn off Bluetooth, GPS, Synch and Wi-Fi. I use the free "Data Switch" app to turn of 3G. I use the stock Task Manager to do a "Level Two" close of apps running in the background.

There are three "outlaw" apps on the Prevail that start themselves almost every time I download Gmail using 3G or Wi-Fi: BoostZone, Maps, and TeleNav. I have to "force close" at least one of them almost every time I use 3G or Wi-Fi. I go to "Manage Apps" and check the "Running" category to verify that the only apps running are Settings, Battery Widget, Google Services, and Swiftkey X Keyboard.

Twice a day I turn on either 3G or Wi-Fi and "synch" and download my Gmail. Then I turn off 3G, Wi-Fi,m and "synch", do a "Level Two" clear of background apps and force close BoostZone, Maps, and TeleNav.

This steps sound complicated and time-consuming, but actually are easy and fast after a few days. The payoff is that I go go six or seven days on a charge, making a few short phone calls and doing about ten texts per day, or two or three days per charge with a few longer phone calls (less than a hour of total phone calls over a three day period).

BUT...Android should do this stuff automatically. There is no reason for Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS, Maps, Synch and TeleNav to be running in the background ever...Android should turn them on when the phone owner is actually using one of them, and turn them off when the owner finishes using the service. Every Prevail owner could then get two or three days per charge without the owner ever lifting a finger or thinking about battery life.
