Battery Life

So, iPhones charge at the same rate as Androids? Then why is my N5 charging so much slower via the laptop? Sorry, I'm confused.

They draw the same amount of current on a laptop, the maximum of 500mA per the USB spec.

Where the current gets used varies by device.

Androids love more current so that they can fast charge. iPhones don't so you never see a charging difference with those, laptop or not.

And quite often it's a matter of what is running in the background.

It's hard to get much running in the background on an iPhone by default and design. (Not being a hater, that's about iOS design and multitasking.)

Androids are easy to get a LOT running in the background. Sometimes more than you want.

When your screen is off, it should go quiet.

Check out "GSam Battery Monitor"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm

You can use the graph, then Other button to see if your phone is staying awake when the screen is off. View in landscape for a better look.

As jhawkkw mentioned though - due to changes introduced back in Jellybean, as well as the current limiting, Androids do charge slower off of USB.

But it's offset by the larger battery.

I can already attest that they have not yet updated to support either the Nexus 5 or KitKat yet. Not sure which one though because all it does is FC upon opening. :(

Oh hamburgers!

Ok, hopefully they'll sort that quickly, sorry for creating confusion.

I think we agree though - Crystal getting only a 30% gain in 4 hours indicates that a good look at what's running is probably a good idea. :o

It's also a less drastic solution will work-- a battery pull. Of course, you can't pull the battery, but you get the same effect with a soft reset. Hold the power button down (ignore the pop up menu for powering down) until the N5 reboots spontaneously. May not work, but it works for a lot on the ephemeral wonky stuff that seems to happen on electronics.

It did. Here it is. Though I'm charging my phone now.

(I was in a rush earlier and it was faster to just link to my G+ post. Thanks!)

Do you do much social networking, like Facebook perhaps?

Your awake time isn't terrible but it could be quieter more when your screen is off.

Here's mine as an example - not your phone, not KitKat, but just for example. Notice that when the screen is off, you want very little power draw.

(Don't mind the glitch in the middle, I reset it at that point.)

Also noticing that your mobile signal seems to vary some, you'll lose power if you're having reception issues.

Thanks! I don't know how to turn my screen off but I'll look into it. I lowered the brightness but saw it was still my main power draw.
I'm not sure about my carrier signal. I have an AT&T account. I simply took my SIM out of my iPhone and put it in my N5. My iPhone always said 4G in the taskbar but this phone either doesn't show a letter or it says "H" and I have no idea what that means. I looked for a notification key but couldn't find one. Do you know?
For the most part I was at home and on my Wi-Fi.

(The images aren't showing for me in the app. I'll look when I get home and get on my laptop.)

ETA: yes, I do a lot of social networking as I am a social media manager/digital marketeer.

I may have an explanation for some people...

Do you use IMAP/Exchange?

If so.. your drain issues are possibly caused by a bug in the email app.

Seems to be 2 themes with this issue as I just got bit by it myself.
1. You get set up okay but then sync starts to fail and go into sync mode
over and over again in the background and eats your battery...
2. Or you just can't get it set up in which case... no email and no batt drain.

Hope this some of you with battery issues.
I can confirm that I now have massive battery drain but it's caused by the email app going into hyperactive sync while not downloading any messages.

I have it setup to sync every hour, and according to betterbatterystats that's all its doing.

Did you have it syncing more frequently?

Anyone else getting the NlpCollectorWakeLock?

Its my second largest wake lock aside from my AudioMix (because I play music a lot, I assume.)

Anyone know any remedies for it?

By the way, quick question. What Location setting do I set to in order to save as much battery life as possible but still have Maps work? (Maps is the only location app I really care about... And maybe the Google now weather)

Every time I use my maps, it bugs me about not having my GPS orwifi on, so I need to go and change it to High Accuracy. But if I set to Device Only, it STILL bugs me! Any solutions?

Its a location wake lock. Only reason to really get rid of it entirely would be to get rid of location services.

You can limit it by limiting the usual suspects: Google now, changing location accuracy to battery saving, turn off location history, ect

Depends what your Maps use is.

For navigation, GPS might be all you need.

However - we have aGPS, the a is for assisted.

If your terrain or environment leaves you occluded and unable to maintain a sufficient GPS sky view, navigation will fall back to the less accurate but still effective method of triangulation from cell towers.

Without that problem, navigation works fine regardless of how much Maps complains.

I leave Google location off, my Google weather is happy with an occasional GPS query to get my location.

Looks like I'll be telling it to use Device Only.

Is there any way to tell it to shut up about enabling both my Wifi and GPS just to use navigation?
