Bell Atrix [Canada]

Ugly cases :/ I hope that Bell release the Atrix earlier than the 17!!! :D I can't wait for the Atrix to come!!! I hope it gets rooted FAST like our US counterpart! I tried to talk a Bell rep into taking me to the Atrix training...I don't think it worked :( Will be more perssitent ;)

Ugly cases
They may not look great, but I like the fact that they're already available. I generally use a gel case like these, so I'll buy one the same day I get the phone and keep the phone in there for protection. I bought a gel case for the Desire immediately too, and the case makes the power button much less sensitive so it doesn't keep turning the screen on by accident. My wife has a gel case on her Legend for the same reasons. On the Atrix the power button is recessed, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I didn't think it mattered what carrier the phone was with for rooting ...
It likely won't matter as I doubt the bootloader will change much if at all for the Bell version. I'm not too concerned as I've never really bothered with rooting beyond the curiousity of it.
:)

I got my Atrix pre-ordered from Bell. I wasn't originally gonna get the laptop dock, but I heard rumors Bell is gonna sell it for only $150, so I'm thinking I might go for it.

Online or instore? I don't see anything online about preorders for the Atrix. Man if it's $150, that would be sweet! Our brethren in the US will definitely be jealous.

No contract price would be nice too if you can find that out. I haven't found a thing online about pre-orders. Hopefully it won't be too h igh. I want one bad, but I do have my limits.

I'm hoping that off contract it's no more than $600. Might try Pacific Mall if it is, lol.

It was in store. I went and said I needed to renew my plan (well, I didn't need to, but I wanted it for this phone). So when I told the rep there the phone I wanted, she got me a spec sheet Bell had, downloaded it, and showed me the phone with all the specs on it, it was the Atrix. She said she would order it as soon as she could and call me as soon as she got it. However, there was no date on it.

Ya, AT&T was really trying to rip people off for it. That laptop is pretty weak and is dependant on the phone to work, yet they try to charge as much as a netbook, which is better in pretty much every way. It's ridiculous. So ya, I'm hoping Bell doesn't try the same thing (provided the rumor is true).

ah that's what you meant, I don't really consider that pre-order. The instore rep said the same thing to me, 'give us your number and we'll call you when we get it in stock'. Well it seems that it's the 17 :) Hoping it's earlier, lol.

Oh, I see your point. I'll change what I say from now on to reflect that, I'm sure you're not the only one who would get confused by something like that.

I'm going to check with my Rep in Alberta about more information about what has been detailed in this thread. If that lapdock is really at a $150 price point, it'll be hard to pass that up.

I'm also really curious about the rate plans for this phone. I figure unlimited data is a must but I hope it'll be similar in price to what I pay for my current Blackberry.

I'm not sure if you know, but BB compresses your data so you end up using less for the same information compared to the iPhone or Android. Do you have the BB 500mb plan?

BB's are good for two things, secrecy and the really efficient way it uses data. In fact, it uses it so efficiently, most companies are forced to offer a separate kind of data plan just for BB's. If you do decide to get any other kind of smart phone out there, you are gonna need to call and change your data feature from blackberry data to smartphone data. It's likely you're gonna be paying an extra $5-$10.

I usually just pay every month whatever the amount is (it's usally $100+) and don't look into it. AFAIK, I have some kind of unlimited data BB plan. But if I have to pay an extra 10-15$ it wont break me. I'll deffinatley have to look into readjusting the plan so I can get a hopefully cheaper rate.

On a side note:
I've been seeing a Bell mobility banner a lot while browsing different websites at work and thought i'd share for all you Bell customers in Canada.

Motorola ATRIX, only from Bell

I guess they have a contest for the Atrix. I'm deffinatley going to enter.

Thanks azazel, I've been trying to navigate Bell's site to find that contest! :) *crosses fingers* I do hope I'm one of the lucky 5

This is interesting:
Enter to win 1 of 5 Prize Packs which include the MOTOROLA ATRIXTM smartphone, MOTOROLA LAPDOCKTM and HD Multimedia Dock valued at approx $1230.

The Atrix is $599 off contract, $169 with a 3-year term and $50 data plan (expensive plans). The laptop dock is $499, and multimedia dock is $129. The laptop dock is way overpriced - it's just a screen and keyboard in a folding case.
The multimedia dock I'll probably get though as I want to use the phone connected to my HDTV along with a keyboard and mouse.

I entered the contest today too, but I also signed up for "information" when the Atrix page first went up online. I've not received anything from Bell from the first sign up, but when I signed up for the contest today I got a confirmation email.

I just thought about the Atrix and using it on Rogers/Fido...will Bell mess with the firmware and block access to EDGE/GPRS data on the phone like Telus did with the HTC Desire? With my Desire, I had to flash generic firmware on the phone for the EDGE data connection to work. Since the Atrix has a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked, we won't be able to install any other firmware. Root access has been obtained with the Atrix, but I don't think that will let us adjust EDGE access.
That could be a fail for some users on Rogers/Fido...

That is a ridiculous ******* price for the laptop dock. I can get a netbook with more functionality and isn't completely dependent on my phone for that price.

I agree and I think it won't sell because of the high price. AT&T is selling it at a high price in the US too, which is a big mistake for something that is supposed to make phone and laptop technology one and the same. I'm guessing the laptop dock costs less than $100 to make since it's nothing more than a small screen and keyboard in a plastic case with a battery. I won't be buying it, that's for sure - I already have a nice laptop if I need one.

I completely agree. It most likely costs them something like $50-$75 to make the thing, if even that. Now, that money, plus the kind of people it takes to design this kinda thing should make the product priced at $150, I'd pay up to $200 for it so they get an even nicer profit. However, $499?? that's a ******* joke price. They're not Apple, they can't get away with this ****.

Ordered my unlock code from cellunlock dot net on Thursday at 11am. Received it Saturday at 6:40pm.

I tested the speeds on the telus network in Burlington, ON and got:

1st test
2.93mbit down
0.34mbit up
331ms

2nd test
4.52mbit down
0.34mbit up
1834ms

3rd test
3.31mbit down
0.32mbit up
193ms

Hope this helps any other Canadians who were hoping to run this phone on Telus.

You can get the MM dock right now via Amazon.com. Even after shipping and duty, it might be cheaper than Bell retail price.

That's wonderful...except what good is the dock when we won't have the phone for another 2 weeks?
:p
