Best DUAL SIM android phone?

Thanks for your help Solutor, got the ZTE U960 running perfectly now. All in all its a pretty damn good phone - certainly the only choice if you want to use 2 european 3G GSM cards, nothing else available comes close.

All works as expected, the only positives and negatives that stand out for me are:

- would have liked a better quality screen. Its okay, but obviously not up to iPhone resolutions.
+ Battery much better than expected, really can do nearly 2 days with everything left on.
- Feels a bit plastic & cheap, wish it didn't have the logo's then it would look a lot better.
+ Dual sim management is very good, although it took me a while to realise that 3G only works in SIM2 when you are using 2 GSM sims.
- Have had one or 2 crashes playing games
+ Finally a dual sim phone with enough storage not to have to move all apps to SD!
- slow start up. Also sometimes lags a bit, although only temporarily.

Its the first dual sim phone that I'm actually going to keep using rather than throwing in the back of a drawer in frustration, so finally i'm only carrying one phone instead of my Desire Z & 4s :-)

Anyone one want to buy an HDC A9100 or an H7000? They're not much use as phones, but they make nice paper weights.

hi all
i have just got a new Zte u960 from etotalk.
its a nice phone good size good screen and a fast processor but i am having a problem with a pop up error message about every twenty seconds or so.this is the message i get.

the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly
what is causing this and is there a quick way to stop it? i've contacted the vendor but with time differences and what not i thought i'd try here and see if anyone has experienced this problem before.

i had the phone rooted and google android sofware put on before i got it. also its my first android phone so i thought getting them to leave it ready for use would iron out any problems. not so though

thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

First of all what rom do you have preinstalled ? It comes with the market and root or not ?

Anyway the first thing you should do is to wipe the phone (from the privacy menu) start with the fresh system and see what happen.

- would have liked a better quality screen.

the screeen quality is top level: good contrast, good viewing angle, decent black, good color balance and so on.

The iphone 4 has a better resolution, but is also a phone that cost twice...

+ Dual sim management is very good

Yes, is good, but the cheap clones have a way better management (only one call button, custom SIM names, custom signal color for signal background and call logs, optional defaults for voice calls, sms and data and so on, btw this is only a SW matter, surely improvements will come in the future.

DZ is almost a perfect phone, is so stable and problem free that is boring ;) but the ZTE beat it in audio quality, signal sensitivity, and screen quality..

Its certainly a good screen for this level phone, but I am looking forward to when dual sim phones catch up with the high end mainstream phones & we get the better screens (& much quicker CPU's).

I'm looking at alternative ROM's as the one I got from Etotalk does crash a fair bit, especially when playing games. Which do you recommend for speed & stability? I had a look at the site you linked to, but as it was all in Chinese I was concerned that any ROM's may also be in chinese. How are you getting on with B13? Does it have English included?

You can always expect better things, especially in the tech area,

But this is not a "good screen for this level phone", is a very good screen *in general*, just comparing it with the 95% of the brand phones.

Most of the non amoled HTC phones have worse screens, the motorola Droid 3 and droid 4 have a worse screen, iphone 1/2/3 have a worse screen, and so on....

I built a B13 rom cleaned from chinese apps and with the market preinstalled, I'll upoload it later.

I have not much time to do it now.

Solution found. just in case anyone has the same problem again.
i tried phone with one sim at a time and found that it was my vodafone sim card causing the problem. got a new simcard from vodafone shop and the phone now works perfectly

I've reached the same position with my G11i Pro from etotalk. It's an excellent phone and outperforms my old Nokia N97mini in weak signal areas. Admittedly, it can't support two conversations at once like the U960 ... but then neither can I!

I gave my Cherry Orbit (GSmart G1310) away ... to my worst enemy! :D

Looks like it is really unfriendly with vodafone.

Out of couriosity, where are you from ?

The new and old sims are 64 or 128k ?

Is the new sim working in the slot 1 too ?

I know, there are a lot of questions but they can help the new users a lot to understand what's going on with vodafone sims.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in Ireland. As to the sim card size i don't know the difference in them. i would have had the old sim card for a few years. the only difference i can physically see is the exposed gold chip on the new sim is smaller than that on the old one.

the vodafone sim works in both sim 1 and sim 2 slots

etotalk also got back to me this morning. i have to say it took them less than 24 hours to get back to me which is fairly quick.

Likely is different in Ireland, but on italian SIMs the size is printed on the sim itself and also visible trough the SIM management page on the Vodafone.IT portal.

There's also an option to upgrade the SIM from 64K (and smaller sizes) to 128k, unfortunately there isn't such option to downgrade from 128K, although the 64K SIMs are still widely available to the new customers.

Interesting, thanks.

etotalk also got back to me this morning, i'll attach the email below. i have to say it took them less than 24 hours to get back to me which is fairly quick.

Practically they forwarded to you one of the mails sent to me earlier, so wasn't really a big effort.;)

BTW that rom is still a B08, with some customizations made from etotalk, the market already integrated and the Chinese apps removed.

Not a big upgrade for the people who have the phone already working fine.

The first big improvement is present on the B13 rom, where the TTS management is fixed.

just read that Samsung is releasing 3 dual sim androids:
Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos surfaces, costs €260 - GSMArena.com news

But the new Galaxy Ace Duos will be GSM + CDMA, instead of dual GSM

nonetheless, if the trend continue, its a matter of time we see Galaxy S Duos :)

Recently a lot of phones have the baseband frontend which is dual standard, then the CDMA or GSM part can be disabled/not enabled via SW.

So phisically that phones are ready since the day one to dual GSM and likely to dual CDMA (in the Chinese flavour, which is based on SIMs like the GSM), so we will have to wait and see.

For the producers is just matter of installing a different baseband SW

Two minor things i can fault with the zte u 960. these do not affect the operation of the phone but are niggly little things that work but just not as well as they could.

the messages app preinstalled on the phone doesn't support those emoji characters. it can send them when the emoji keyboard is installed but it doesn't display or read them when the phone recieves them.
i downloaded the go sms app and one or two others to try and they solved the emoji issue but don't offer the option to send from sim1 or sim2 therefore having to use one number for all texts. taking away from the money saving benifits of dual sim.
is there any sms app that supports a dual sim function that works properly?

Another issue is with the contacts app. when impoting contacts from simcard to phone it doesn't save them to the phone but merely lets you see the contacts on the simcard in the contacts app. to save them to the phone you have to move them individually within the contacts app. Also the app doesn't fully understand the international dialling codes. i have all my contacts saved with international dialling codes in front of the number and when i get a call from any of my contacts on the phone it doesn't recognise the number. the text message app recognises them but not the dialler/contacts app.

I realize I'm getting old when I have to use google to understand a word like emoji :)

I can't help here I use the SMS rarely so I'm not the right person to reply to that question

My contacts were already stored on gmail so were automagically imported on the first use.

Are you sure the contacts aren't imported, maybe they are just grouped under a "imported" group.

Also the app doesn't fully understand the international dialling codes
I noticed this a couple of time, I have still to understand when it happen, and if happen only on one of the two sims.

What I noticed is that when happen the + sign is missing, so the contact app is nitpicker, bt is the phone itself that "eat" a part of the number.

I've heard of this same problem on some of the earlier apple iphones where it understood the international codes with 00 as opposesed to a + or vice versa. At the time i think the solution was to set up each contact with two numbers one beginning with + and the other 00.
i'm not going to do that though i think i can live with it the way it is!

Dear etotalk,
I've sent you some questions via email and still waiting answers. Hope that will receive it soon ;).
Will duplicate some of them here if you don't mind.
1) I have troubles with pure signal strength if simcard(64k) is in SIM1 slot. If I put the same simcard in different phone, for example iphone, it shows 4-6bars against 2-3 in zte u960. How to fix it?
2) Android marked is being closed with error message "android market has been closed with unexpected error". How to fix it?
3) If I need second battery and some accessories for my zte u960, will I be able to buy it in your store?
4) Do I need to update firmware from B08 till B13, if I still have B08?

ZTE is unveiling 8 new phone at the MWC next week.
if there is an international version of U960,(or even better, a dual sim targa2 + ICS), I will be over the moon!

Here is what I had tonight - at 12:30am battery was charged for 35%. At 6:35am it was 0%. WTF?
For me it nonsence! I'm pissed
