Open file explorer and allow it superuser access.
Tap on UP to go to root
Scroll down to System

Copy the 3 zip files there. Do not unzip them
Long press on each to get the options
Scroll down to Properties - Change
Set the permission as in screen shot

Hi is there any way to change the recovery into English?
I just want to remove all the chinese crap from my phone. But I would like to get a full nandroid backup for safeside.

BTW > I have bought the phone from a aliexpress seller $177 including DHL delivery to uk , overall very satisfied, arrived in less than 48 hrs. rooted and google play installed. got a screen protector , a leatherlook pouch and a stylus as gift.

You can try to scratch display and you will see, if it is glass or gorilla glass :-), but in preview on youtube at 1:30 I saw a lot of small scratches on brand new device, so I was asking.

Yes, 100 $ is 30% of price, but for gorilla glass, when I'm not using any case...

That is a test, I won't do :p Anyway, had the phone for about a week now, carry it in my pocket with no screen protector or case, and so far no scratches.

Yes it does have LED notifications. E.g. flashes green for new messages, red for low battery...
 
Hi guys, really glad I found this forum! I've been looking everywhere for reliable info on the Lenovo A789. If you don't mind, I have a few questions before I decide to buy:

1) Does this have LED notifications for missed calls/texts etc (ie. flashing buttons) as I've seen different answers to this.

2) How easy is it to root? Etotalk offer this as an additional service but if it's just a matter of using one of the Market apps, then that's easy enough to do for me.

3) Does the Google Playstore/Market come preloaded or do you have to install through an apk? Is this straightforward.

4) How is battery life? I know this will depend on your use but in general compared to your usual phone.

Received my ZTE V970 the other day. Spent a few days with it now so like EmilF, I'd also like to share my thoughts on the device.

Delivery to London took 3 days and unfortunately I was hit with a customs charge (

The A789 does not have a LED indicator. I bought it from Etotalk alreadty rooted with Gogole Market and apps already installed. I just cleaned it out a bit more to remove all chinese apps.
Battery life has been good. I charge the phone about 6 hours at night. I use Whatsapp a lot, wi-fi, G+, some FB, Dropbox often and other network related apps. I do not play games or use Youtube alot.
I do advise you to install Es Task Manager or similar to control the start up apps. It will extend the battery life

How long is the warranty period for ZTE? I have never came across this brand - any good?
I have also found other re-sellers than e-to-talk which are cheaper - any on the recommended (this for priv please).

I only have the lenovo a789 , and it is highly recommended by me,
My Android history-
HTC magic> HTC desire > Viewsonic V350(crap) >Star A3(another crap)> ZTE u960 >Lenovo A789.
I still use U960 for me because it is DSDA , A789 is my wife's phone.
We paid $177.65 including dhl shipping to UK , ordered via aliexpress. Recevied phone in 3rd working day , rooted and google play installed. Also a leather pouch and screen protector came free. not going to use the case.

I'm disappointed the A789 doesn't have LED notification as I find that very useful for when I have the phone on silent. Looks like I'll have to go for the ZTE V970 or Newman N1

To remove the sound, use root explore to rename \system\media\bootaudio.mp3 and shutsound.mp3 to shutsound.mp3.old/bootaudio.mp3.old

I use Swiftkey, so I have not really used the stock keyboard.

I have the ZTE V970, and is really happy with it, and would recommend it (ZTE V970 Review (User review)).

Personal I would go for a model with 1 GB of RAM, that better match the CPU speed (A789 only have 512MB). Also A789 has a smaller screen and lower resolution.

Warranty is mostly unto the sellers. ZTE is a good and well established Chinese brand, that have been producing phones for years.

I buy from e-to-talk because I have good experiences with them. They help with ROM updates, root and so on.

and what about front camera in zte v970.is there front camera present in zte v970?
 
Just wondering if anyone can try Lightflow (from the Market) on the A789 to see if this works for notifications for missed calls/texts etc

This phone seems neck to neck with Desire V in terms of speed and memory, but with two main advantages on paper:

1) It's claim to have "unique 'Dual SIM dual on'..." feature. If I understand it correctly, this is equivalent to Dual Sim Dual Active similar to ZTE U960 (line A can call line B), and not simply Dual Sim Dual Standby like the other Dual Sim phones.

2) it has a front facing camera according to Android Authority, and Desire V does not have one.

This is a proper release from a major brand in european market based on ICS, and it is modelled of the Galaxy S3, definitely worth taking a look.

I m just glad that these big boys are now taking Dual Sim a bit more seriously.

It's always hard to understand the foggy samsung terminology.

For example the galaxy ace duos has a fake dual on function, practically it does automagically the call forwarding from a one sim to the other (you can do it manually in any dual sim phone, and usually you pay for the diverted call)

I m just glad that these big boys are now taking Dual Sim a bit more seriously.

A phone which is just announced and which is still not on par with the almost one year old U960 is a more a shame than a breaking news.

Thanks EmilF, really appreciate it. However, I have located the files in the Root Explorer app that was already installed and when I select the file and select rename, it states "cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only". What can I do?

Swiftkey is great, I think I will be using this from now on. Thanks.

Finally, I checked out your review on lowyat (I'm assuming that it's you!), can you please tell me which weather widget you are using? And how can I install this new ROM that has increased performance? Thanks again.

well, at least there are a lot more choices now than before.

U960 was a great phone, but I prefer to look at things more optimistically and hope the newer generation of dual sim androids are going the right way.

To begin with, the likes of Desire V and Galaxy S Duos are ICS based which is a already a much better iteration of Androids. The fact that now major manufacturers such as Motorola, HTC, Samsung are all in the Dual GSM Sim arena (all with European release) is a good sign for this niche market.

Who knows, maybe there will be a Galaxy Note DUOS, or Nexus DUOS soon.
 
Sorry if this has been mentioned further back in the thread but acer are launching the Liquid Gallant Duo, 1ghz, 1gb ram, ICS, 4gb storage, 5mp camera.
