Best DUAL SIM android phone?

Hi Kingcedz,
Do you have any further update/comments to make on your experience on Samsung vis-a-vis the HTC? A qualitative feedback on what you feel is good/bad in Samsung/HTC would be very useful.

Have you used ZTE/Huawei/Newman/Lenovo to make a first-hand comparison?

Many thanks

The custom UI between Samsung and HTC is pretty much a personal choice. HTC Desire V is very easy to root, but Samsung S DUOS has European warranty. I personally find the Galaxy stands out to be the better phone. The software is better adapted and overall experience is very good. And it's on path to be upgraded OTA to Jelly bean soon. The battery is outstanding.

I have used the U960 and Lenovo A60 before, as well as Motorola XT532. In my opinion all three are not as good as the HTC Desire V or Galaxy S DUOS simply because their software is too outdated and not optimized for ICS/Jelly Bean.

ZTE seems to have better dual sim features, but honestly I don't particularly find the so call Dual Sim Full Active functions useful as the change of me getting two calls simultaneously is very small, and when that happens I still have voicemail features on both of my numbers anyway. Running 2 radio at once also drains the battery quickly too.

The Dual Sim Galaxy Note 2 is officially released in China now. For anyone who s looking for the best of Android Dual Sim this is the one.
The specs is the same as the Standard Galaxy Note 2 ( quad core 1.6ghz etc), in addition the dual sim features. It's a power machine.
Rather unfortunately, The big problem of this phone is that it comes without google services( gmail, play, YouTube) It's not clear if its easy to root / install custom rom but the track record of Chinese version galaxy note rootability is not good.
I m hoping this phone will be available outside China as Galaxy Note DUOS at some stage though I m not holding my hopes up.

That's a distinct possibility, because Samsung usually does it's dual-SIM phones for SE Asia as well, like Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, etc. Where Google is not restricted.

That's what I m hoping for, but Samsung has in the past advertised dual sim range as DUOS model outside China to hint international release, so far this model is solely advertised as a variant of Galaxy Note for Chinese release. That's why I m not holding my hopes up.

Samsung s dual sim handling software is the most efficient one i have seen, If this model is release as a DUOS overseas, it's simply a must have. (Whatever the price!)

Are you sure it is really dual sim?
I mean...is it dual sim dual standby or dual sim dual active?
For me both way are ok. I only hope that it's not like that you have a normal sim slot and a microsim slot and you have to choose whether to use one of the other sim.

Don't buy from EtoTalk - they are deceivers!
i've bought an huawei from them, but after knew that is out of stock they offer to me an upper choice at the same price. but because some features, i've refused. so they refund me at the same time.

etotalk for me is safe.

I apologize now if this thread has already answered this question, but I'm finding it difficult to find a straight answer. I am in the US and us AT&T's pay as you go phone service using a sim in a standard cell phone. I also have an AT&T data sim in a tablet for use on the 3G network. I would like to get a dual sim smartphone that allows for one sim to be used for voice and one sim to be used for data. I would like them to both be active. For example, I would like the data sim to be online at all times checking email and I want the voice sim online at all times listening for incoming calls/ and receiving sms/mms messages. Is this possible? Would dual sim dual standby work for this purpose or do I need dual sim dual active?

Thank you!

So, what you're saying is that even though I'm not listening for calls on both sims simultaneously and I'm only using data on one all the time and listening for calls on the other, I still need an Dual Active instead of a Dual Standby?

Dual Sim Full Active
If you need for both sims to be online ALWAYS that means even when making a call on SIM1, SIM2 can meanwile recive calls/SMS/use internet, YES then you will need Dual Sim Full Active. I personly know about two phones supporting that: the ZTE U960 and the HTC T528w

Dual Standby
If you need for both sims to be online always EXCEPT when making a call from any one of the SIM's, then Dual Standby is fine (for MT6575 and MT6577 chipsets). That means, that you can be online on the internet with one sim, and both sims can still recive calls, SMS and so on. When you make/recive a call from SIM1 and use internet on SIM2, the internet connection will be disconnectet, and reconnect after end of call.

DSDA
Is like two separate phones fit into one case.

DSDA

Is just like using a dual sim adaptor or similar

There is another alternative to dualsim phone is G-mate

I don't agree - with an adaptor you have to switch between sims, and only one is online at the time. With Dual Standby both sims are online in all other situations then when on in active in a call (that goes for MT6575 and MT6577 anyway).

EmilF - Thank you! This is exactly the conflicting information I'm finding online. In a dual standby phone, both sims listen for incoming calls all the time. That is clear. The conflicting info I am getting while researching online is what happens to Sim1 when one Sim2 is using 3g to communicate online. As long as Sim1 is always listening for calls/sms/mms while Sim2 is browsing the web or downloading email, then I don't care if Sim2 is turned off for a few minutes if you're on a phone call with Sim1. As long as Sim2 resumes operation automatically once Sim1 disconnects the call.

Using this configuration I will be able to use a 10 cent/min talk sim with an 2GB monthly data sim for half the price of a monthly smartphone talk/data plan from the same provider.

One last question - is it possible in Android to designate Sim2 as the only data sim to be used?

Thank you again!

If you go for a MT6575 / MT6577 phone, yes you can. On those phone you have the option to choose what sim that will use data and 3G service (the other sim will operate on 2G). You can also choose to use a default sim card for SMS/Calls or to be asked for each SMS/Call.

You can see the dual sim menu that is standard for MT6577 here on the ZTE V970: ZTE V970 Review (User review)

You may be able to, but it will almost certainly be a grey import. Which basically means no warranty from Samsung, and no software updates from Samsung either AFAICT. Also the one's intended for the Mainland are Googleless, unless you change the ROM or manage to install Play and other Google apps via rooting or whatever.

I have a work phone (calls & text only) and personal phone for everything else. Originally was going to get rid of the personal phone (One X) and put the sim in a nexus 7 but carrying the nexus around would be a pain in the ass as it's abit big to fit in a pocket.

Looking at getting a dual sim phone now instead and the main options seem to be HTC Desire V or Samsung Galaxy S Duos. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with either or know of any better models due to be released soon? I know there is a Samsung Note 2 dual sim and a S3 dual sim due out but as far as I can see only planned to be released in china?

I don't play games or watch videos on the phone (with the exception of odd thing on youtube) mainly only calls, texts and social networks/general internet browsing and possibly will use it as a music player

Thanks

Have been playing with the phone for last 3-4 days and am really pleased. Have used Viewsonic V350 and Moto XT532 in the past and S Duos is miles ahead of the other two.

Two things are bothering me though:

1. There is no LED notification: Really strange Samsung decided not to have it.

2. The Dialer app: Given that a dual sim phone is primarily used to allow calling from two sims, I am baffled by the UI design of the Dialer app. Once you click on the Dialer app, it takes you to the "Keypad" screen. Here you have the possibility to dial a number from Sim 1 or Sim 2 but unfortunately you don't get any option on any other screen (e.g. you are on "Call Log" screen and want to redial a previously dialed/missed/received call but you cant choose which sim to dial out from as it uses the default sim). Likewise, if you search for a contact and then click on the phone symbol, it again does not given you an option to choose which sim to dial out from but uses the default sim.

I am pretty annoyed by the above two features. Wonder how others are coping?

Hi Shane welccome to Android Forums. I've moved your post into the Best dual-SIM Android phone thread. Here there's plenty of good information about these devices, you might want to read through.
