Root Best Non Sense ROM

Anything cyanogen based. Cyanogen itself is good, but I prefer defrost 6.1 (not 6.1a) but you may still have to flash a radio.

I took the plunge from leaving the Sense HD ROM (baadnewz's) and went with Defrost 6.1a because of this post... and I know danfrance knows his shit.

So far, its pretty good w/ LP. But there are some things that I need some help with, (being my first non-sense ROM..)

a) I desperately miss the HTC Friendstream and people widgets. What can I use to replace these? I don't want to purchase LP (giving access to the LPP widgets), until I know it is better than ADW or that I can leave Sense with no regrets, and that I can get the widgets I am looking for.

b) What can I use for the HTC Mail widget and app? It was pretty good. K-9 seems OK, but what about a mail widget?

c) Although using the phone without Sense seems sooo much faster, (and not to mention that I have > 175 MBs of RAM free vs. only around 16MBs with Sense), my Quadrant score actually dropped from the DHD ROM. I had a score around 1530's with the old DHD ROM, with no SetCPU overclock at all, but with Defrost, I am only getting around 1360+. I am not sure if Defrost contains the same SD Card and GPU fixes that was included with the DHD one, (snq's kernel).. or if I have not set up SetCPU correctly, but I would like to see a better Quadrant score.

d) Is it OK to use a new radio with this ROM? I have 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17, (as recommended in the DHD thread on XDA), however nothing greater than 32.49 is listed on the Defrost thread on XDA - [ROM-FroYo AOSP+CyanogenMod] DeFroST 6.1a 12/12: HAVS/FM/MODS/OTA - xda-developers)

e) It it possible to get the Sense window animations? They were really cool!

Any help would be appreciated.

I used a paid app for facebook (it also does gmail, sms, missed calls and twitter) - Called Pure messenger widget. I didnt think it was as good as friend streaqm initially but after a while using it, thought it was great.

I saw some "people" type apps and tried a couple but LP version was much better. I just use shortcuts to individual contacts now because:

1) I only regularly contact a couple of people
2) The people widgets wouldnt fit with my current theme

b) What can I use for the HTC Mail widget and app? It was pretty good. K-9 seems OK, but what about a mail widget?

Can't answer that one I'm afraid.

Its really important to remember that quadrant is not real life performance.

CharlesCollins was reporting low quadrant scores too.

I personally feel the best combination is:
DeFroST 6.1 (not 6.1a - but thats only because I haven't used it)
DeFroST 6.0c HAVS 1113Mhz + BFS 925mV or 6.0c SVS 1190mhz + BFS

CLock the above kernel (available in Defrost setup app) to 1113 (or 1152 in SVS).n The kernel is well undervolted so this will still be using less power than stock. Set a min / max screen off profile in set cpu to 245Mhz (on demand).

On demand is good for main profile, but I often switch to performance for Quadrant.

My mate had baadnewz and overclocked, it wouldn't get over about 1639 on quadrant, but with the above Defrost setup, you'll be able get 1800+

Should be fine, just check camera and stuff that uses hardware works.

e) It it possible to get the Sense window animations? They were really cool!

Not sure on sense animations. I just use spare parts to slow down the standard android ones, which I like.

I used to apply some animations using metamorph from the market...

These:

New UI Android Animation for HTC Desire - xda-developers

I no longer can use them as Metamorph reboots to apply and doesnt unmount ext2 very well, which I use for data2sd.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice - I was able to get above 1800+ on one of my 3 runs (avg was probably mid 1700's). So far I am pretty pleased - but I am going thru my widget withdrawal. I will re-check the "Show us your Desire Homescreens" thread for some inspiration now that I am free from the grip of Sense!

My other main concern coming from baadnewz was battery drain. Hopefully this will be improved with Defrost 6.1a. I wonder if it is tasker that is draining my battery, but I never see that in spare parts or battery usage stats.

So far I am liking LP and will probably purchase Plus so I can get some nice widgets. But I think I still need to evaluate ADW.

BTW: Why is it that I now have the old market application? And what the Apps.zip for?

Really?
Huh, I didn't know that :o

well actually i dont think hes words come across properly
MIUI is aosp based and is extremely quick, not quit as quick as defrost but none the less is nearly as quick (wouldnt say defrost is anywhere near twice as fast Dan)

it does defeat the object though, MIUI is MIUI because of all of its offerings, you remove the launcher and have launcher pro then youve removed 3/4 of the things that miui offers that other roms cannot.

if you like the statusbar then thats already in AOSP/defrost/cyanogen builds as just like MIUI they are based on 2.2.1

if you are going to use launcher pro, use defrost. no point in having miui

im currently loving miui as ive taken quite well to the launcher and the new transitions and additives are awesome

Of course I am exaggerating.

How can I tell what is draining my battery?

I don't quite understand what Spare Parts' battery history is telling me.

I have "Partial Wake usage" selected since last unplugged and nothing jumps out at me. Android System is at the top, but the bar graph is only like 20%. Everything thing else is very minor.

dont make me bring out the screenshots (oh wait youll ave those fake boosted ones)

That was with sync off. Used to get 2500+. With sync on now, I am still getting over 2000, but the I/O score is no longer due to cache write-back, so not really fake anymore.

However, still not a true representation of Defrost.

I think Miui may be slightly slower than defrost quadrant wise. Not by a lot, but a bit slower.

I know Sense widgets cannot be used outside of Sense, but what about some Sense applications? I.e.: the dialer, people app, etc. etc?

Is the long press on a page / input box to get the cut/copy/select/all/text a Sense specific thing? I don't have this capability !

it is a little, not much and in terms of real time use its on par even with all the eye candy

Try a 6.0c kernel.

If you are overclocked to 1190 and get reboots whilst browsing, you are overclocked too much. Maybe freezes are the same.

Ah, I'm on a 6.1 kernel atm. I'll five one a whirl

I recommend either:

6.0c SVS 1190 (clocked to 1152 max) with the BFS Scheduler

Or

6.0c HAVS 1113 (clocked to Max) with BFS Scheduler (925mV)

These are the 2 I always come back to.

I think stock is HAVS CFS, i definitely find these laggier.

CFS = Completely Fair Scheduler. Historically this Scheduler is used for high end desktop machines.

BFS = Brain F*ck Scheduler. Certainly my preference.

These 2 schedulers can be used in Conjunction with HAVS or SVS.

SVS = Static Voltage Scaling. Each Step of Mhz in the clock speed table as a specified voltage. when Mhz = x, mV = y

HAVS = Hybrid Adaptive Voltage Scaling. Like SVS, however it takes a 3rd thing into account. Temperature.

HAVS is generally better on battery by a nominal amount but is not always stable for everyone. Its got much better recently, but SVS is more stable.
