Bionic Cancelled?

Engadget is also reported that the Bionic is a gonner.

Nice phone in theory. Apparently the processor wasn't playing nice with the 4G LTE radio and stuff like that.

Thunderbolt ftw.

does repeating a rumor turn it into truth? not saying the bionic is "for sure" coming to Verizon, at this point, but I'm not ready to fret yet.

This is true. By not refuting the news that has been covered prolifically in the media, Motorola and VZW are more than confirming the Bionic's demise.

This means a relatively long gap for a dual core with VZW, but supports their pushing mid level device for premium price strategy. The Bionic would have conflicted with this.

Considering the Atrix choked and the Xoom is limping along (100K sales is NOT good, no matter how folks want to spin it), Motorola could be close to cashing out of the mobile business. Android was 70% of their revenue growth before this year.

If folks recall, Motorola was going to cash out and the Droid 1 was their final shot of survival.

I don't think it will be too long of a gap.. droid 2x should be out soon..now it could be awhile before we a dual core LTE phone..hell AT&T may have a dual core LTE phone before verizon lol

Unless PR skills at major companies have degenerated to lemming level, both Motorola and VZW would have piggy backed off the rumors, refuted it and built more interest in the Bionic. The Bionic is deader than betamax.

I agree with the others that they should care, because of the potential for buyers to jump ship or exercise their upgrade for another phone if they believe the rumors. But, at the same time, you can't allow rumor-mongers to force your hand or they will manipulate you into handing out information that you're not ready to provide. Still, there are ways to refute a cancellation without providing sensitive information. Something else to consider: it isn't easy to scramble the forces required to initiate effective rumor control over a weekend. Of course they could, properly motivated, but it might not seem to be that big a deal from inside Motorola. I'm sure we'll know something definitive this week.

You've got to remember....VZW wants to sell you the phones in their stores today, not the one coming out next month.

You buy the TB (or another phone) because you couldn't wait - THEY DONT CARE
You leave for another carrier to get the 2nd choice phone - THEY DONT CARE

Very Sad...but so very True! They want our money today, they're not banking on tomorrow.

This is very true, you can't set a precedent by responding to a rumor or you'll be responding to all rumors.

Besides, Verizon "bread and butter" customers are the ones that purchase a phone on a 2 year contract, complete the 2-year contract and then buy another phone with a 2-year contract, and so on, and so on, and so on. The money they make on the "techno-geeks" (the ones that have to have the latest and greatest no matter what the cost) is infinitesimal compared to their "bread and butter" customers. As a matter of fact, Verizon might wish the techno-geek customers fade into the sunset, what with their constant barage of questions about what's coming out, when it's coming out, when it's going to get an update, yada yada yada. Ask their average "bread & butter" customer about "rooting" a phone, or "Jailbreaking" a phone and you'll get a collective "Huh?"

Just my opinion but closer to the truth than you might think.....

I'm not saying the Bionic is cancelled but it makes sense now why the Thunderbolt and Droid Charge are single core phones. It's a lot easier to deal with one big change (new LTE radio) at a time vs. two (LTE and Dual core).

The DX2 actually has my interest now. Sure it doesn't have 4G but it seems to be smoking fast AND reportedly has great battery life (better than the DX1).

:) No way on god's green earth will I buy a new phone that is NOT 4G.

I agree, 4G won't be in my area for a year anyways, and then it probably won't work well anyways.

I'll probably jump for the DX2

Actually, what's happening is that they're bumping up the processor to 1.2GHz and adding 1GB of RAM. Also trying to fit the Atrix's finger print scanner.

It's still April, I can be a fool, right? lol

They do too care if you go to another carrier, but boldly assume you will not, due to their coverage map. VZW wants people buying mid level devices, since they charge the same premium price and assume people will do that, rather than jump ship.

My guess is VZW made a deal with the devil named Apple. The 8655 is slower than last years A4.

Conspiracy, I tell ya!

You are making the assumption that all potential customers keep up on rumors. I would take a guess that only a small percentage of customers do and most of those are people who are ready for a new phone contractually speaking.

As someone else pointed out, Verizon or Motorola can't address every rumor out there. Is there anyone else in the industry that does?

We shall soon see what is correct. Pause for dramatic effect............

i assume that If the rumor is true and the Bionic is axed. Then Moto/VZW may turn up the heat on the Dx2 , which we know now is confirmed as having a dual core processor. Personally if the Dx2 had a better screen (rumored to have so) along with the dual core and 2.3 preloaded i would consider jumping from my DX1 to the new one. I would really really like to see VZW get another Developer phone like the OG Droid, but i'm not holding my breath on that one.
