Help Bionic using pentile matrix screen?

unfortunately yes from all the signs....i hate pentile but it appears moto is heading in this direction with all of their newer devices....have no idea why. I would rather have the screen that is on the OGX.

I do realize all indications point to "yes", but is it confirmed? I understand that it was in the original specs, but one of our biggest complaints was the screen. Someone was apparently listening to our gripes if they scrapped the original, isn't it possible they went a diff direction?

And since I'm throwing around hypotheticals (yup, I turned a singular adjective into a plural noun), say that the new screen really is 4.5". Would that automatically give us less than desirable results in comparison to the Atrix, or even the DX2? Or is it feasible that somehow that size screen with that resolution would make for better overall display?

It's just, they revised this phone to truly live up to it's name. In doing so, this put it in a time frame that it's going to directly go up against the SGS2 and iPhone 5. With Samsung's beautiful Super AMOLED Plus, and Apple's proven retina display, doesn't it stand to reason that they would (or should) put serious focus on the overall display?

Wishing in one hand...

It is moto we are talking about they tend to be pretty clueless and not listen to their customers

I've seen no confirmation, but then again I don't know anyone who expects it to be a traditional RGB type. Doesn't every current Android qHD phone use some variety of Pentile?

All things being equal, a larger screen with same number of same-type pixels will look more grainy. But for those with older eyes, a larger display can be more usable than higher resolution.

If I had to guess, I'd suspect that after all the Pentile screens have saturated the market with their fancy new qHD resolution, there will be some new TrueQHD(TM) or VividQHD(TM) displays introduced to extol the virtues of panels containing the new-old red, green, and blue subpixels.

In the short term, many people will buy based on higher advertised resolution (the same way they bought into the Pentium 4's "megahertz myth"). Maybe eventually battery technology will improve to the point that power-saving display tricks are less compelling.

Yes and no. They certainly aren't going to appeal to the minority, but we are a rather vocal minority. When the Bionic was announced, we were upset that the Atrix got Webtop and more memory. Listening to us or not, we know it's getting Webtop and almost certainly more memory. People have been less than pleased with MotoBlur and we saw a new iteration on the DX2 and evidence of an even newer one on the Bionic. We're POed about the bootloader policy and the at least vocally address that stance will be changed.

Mostly I'm just pointing out that we know very little about the revised Bionic. We have every reason to be skeptical, but no reason to dismiss anything. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Some of you should poke around on other sites a bit. Many of the specs for the new bionic test units have already been confirmed by very reliable sources, including the pentile display.

As far as the reason for the pentile display: It uses significantly less battery power, and as we all know, a high end android phone's battery life has a tendency to suck.

What other sites exactly? I haven't really found any with any specs listed other than howard forums and even those seem to only be guesses.

Howard forums are a good one. I believe that's where some of the test unit specs were confirmed. Look for posts by winston and another gentleman whose name escapes at the moment. I'll check and be back to edit this.

Edit: wnrussell

Edit 2: phil nickinson at android central gets good, reliable info, too.

Has there been any mention of the processor? It's all but confirmed that it's a TI and not a Tegra 2, but have they mentioned if it's been beefed up beyond the 1GHz dual core? I would imagine that they'd at least give it 1.2GHz to compete with the SGS2, but still haven't come across anything.

It's not official yet but many sites speculate it will be higher than 1Ghz. TI OMAP4 has two versions 4430 (1Ghz) and 4440 (1.5Ghz). OMAP4430 is already in use by Optimus 3D and BB Playbook. And recently some sites reported Bionic will probably have 1.2Ghz OMAP4460. I'm not sure what exactly OMAP4460 is or they could have mixed it up with 4440...

Wow, 1.5GHz dual core...that would be something else. If it's at least 1.2GHz AND they make the booloader unlockable, this will def be my new device.

I also prefer 1.2Ghz over 1.5Ghz due to battery reason and it should be still more than fast enough. Even Optimus 3D with OMAP4 at 1.0Ghz seems to perform impressively.

Not liking what I see at some of the other websites and closeup screenies of this display. In the end, will have to see this in person before punching up a Bionic order.

My guess is the catch there would be an even longer wait for the Bionic, since not aware of any mass production devices pushing 1.5ghz Ti chippies. I also agree that battery life would be more challenged.

I would prefer the 1.2 due to less wait, less heat and no need for a Ghostbusters nuclear backpack to support it ;)

Don't cross the streams.
