Root Boost LG855ZV4_21 update

Hmm....Update tool isn't showing it yet...dratz... :(

Since I pretty much have to update to make the phone functional again, I guess I can be the guinea pig on the root status. But I will be shipping it off for refund any day now. So hopefully the update will arrive while I still have it. :P

After looking at the zip file...it looks like a update.zip style zip file. Would it work by renaming it to update.zip file, placing it on SD root and using update in CWM? (the same one that stock recovery has. It's separate from "Install from ZIP" which is a feature only CWM has)

u WILL lose root and recovery. And if your not on stock you will boot loop and have no way to restore a backup

I no longer have have Murky Beats installed. Was planning on waiting to get the new phone before giving it another go. I'll 786 it back to factory and will un-root it, but will leave CWM in place since it will be uninstalled later as a result of the update. Not sure if stock recovery wll let me use the update zip.

So other then CWM and root, I am on stock. Worst case scenario the update won't fix the phone's network troubles and I end up returning it anyway. :P

Just install my zvc update. It's rooted and has cwm intact

Ok back to stock again. However the version string in LG Update tool reads as "LS855ZVC" Which means I have some form of the Sprint update in the phone. Ok does that update really have the updated boost radio? It appears not, because the version string indicates it's the Sprint version and that can't be right...

EDIT: I can confirm with a MD5 check that this radio.img file from teh boost update is INDENTICLE to the one from the sprint update. In otherwords...it's the sprint radio for the sprint phone. This will cause massive problems for me, so I need a radio.img from a previous version of Boost's firmware to fix it. I'd advise someone actually test this on their Boost phone that is activated on Boost.

When I try to activate the phone, update profile, update PRL, the 1x symbel (which has never appeared on my messed up phone untill I flashed the new radio) will vanish and does the usual network errors.

So I did an experiment. I removed the phone from my boost mobile account and added temporarily the prevail. The phone in it's state after a 786 reset usually yields no 1x symbel and never activates nor does it update MDN/MSIDs.

When I tried to activate the phone with the phone's ESN no longer on my account the activation screen referred me to SPRINT's menu for the new or existing users screen. Not Boost's! So now my phone thinks it's some Sprint/Boost abomination hybrid of sorts. (starting to wonder if the phone will actually activate on Sprint's network in the state it's currently in) When I readded the ESN back to boost (without resetting the phone or anything), the 1x symbel remained and I tried to activate the phone again. I instead get this very odd error either in the fresh install android activation screen or in the Activate this Device menu:

"Because of the type of account you have, we'll need to help you with this task. Please dial *2 from your Sprint phone or call Custmer Care at 1-888-211-4727 from another phone so we can assist you. Call Customer Care"

I have never seen this error before on my phone until now. (by the way I had to restore back to my stock backup after the radio update since the result was a force close message for "Android System" when trying to activate and the activation either stalls or the program exits and I get a blank screen).

So now I got 1x data speeds with MDN/MSID (and via DATA menu check even my correct 3G data account name too) programmed in for me. This is the first time I EVER got this perticuler phone to add my account into like MSID/MDN and data account username on it's own. Before, I always had to flash them to the phone with QPST.

So....now what?

heres a cwm flashable rooted with cwm intact of the zv4_21 update.
LG855ZV4_21

this is different from the one in my other thread that uses "sprints" baseband, technically by label but the radios are identical

The version string for the baseband has LG instead of LS (even after restoring my pre-update backup). I'll see what I can do with this one. :D

Ok I'm lead to believe that something on Boost's end is actively blocking this phone's ESN while it's not activated. After removing the ESN from my account, the phone while in stock unactivated mode will then connect using it's ESN account instead of my data account and I see the 1x symbol. It is then able to update PRL. Profile updates still fail since it appears to require an activated phone for that to work. So while the phone's ESN is not on my account I try the hands free activation and instead of an error like usual I see the New or existing user prompt. I go through the steps on the activation screen for existing users. The phone fails and tells me to call Sprint customer service.

So at that point I re-add the ESN to my Boost account, then try activation once more. The 1x symbol never disappears at this point and the phone says that it has been activated. It then successfully upgrades the PRL, checks for firmware (successfully since it said there was no available updates). Then it reboots.

At this point my phone has my MSID/MDN and data account info and I see the 1x symbol now. Internet and data is working. However when I go to update profile/PRL, the 1x symbol vanishes and it then again gives me the usual 67/131 connection error and wants me to update profile (even though I was already in the middle of doing that). I press the dismiss and eventually the update profile dialog errors out with the same error I have been getting. The 1x symbol re-appears after the profile/prl update goes away and this indicates the phone is now back on my boost data account for it's connection.

So now after reboot the phone's ESN account is not connecting to Boost anymore but my own data account is. The phone doesn't use my account to connect for profile/prl updates. It tries to use it's own like it was able to do successfully when the phone wasn't on Boost.

At this point it appears the device may have been someones attempt to port it from a different carrier. Perhaps it used to be on Sprint. Really no way of knowing and I have no clue as to why the Boost website had no problems adding the ESN. If it was on a different carrier, that means the previous owner or the seller put a different touch screen onto the phone so that it has the Boost Mobile logo on it instead of the what ever carrier it used to have. The changed MSL code was perhaps the result of them flashing the Boost firmware onto the phone.

Perhaps someone was able to convince a tech support guy to try and activate a non boost phone for them and as a result the ESN shows up in their system and it can then be added to accounts properly. However activation fails on it's own as the result of the above mentioned problems. So the user got rid of the phone. The phone then ends up in my hands from a seller on eBay. I guess the seller never found out about this (or did, and tried to hide it, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt since he had an extensive feedback history that is mostly positive) and checked ESN, saw that it shows up for Boost and is not on another account, then just lists it as a used phone with clean ESN.

So it looks like it's a phone caught in between carriers and right now it only activates partially if I remove it from the account and let it try to activate and then re-add the esn without rebooting the phone. Then it can activate but only gets 1x speed and after reboot, PRL/Profile updates don't work again. And the Activate this Device option still shows up in the options menu, so the phone still thinks it is not activated. But since my data account is in the phone now, the automatic hands free activation prompt no longer appears after each reboot.

But at this point now, the phone now gets 1x data speeds and apps and internet is able to access the internet.

Looks like I'm still sending this phone off. :(

I know that boost msl's are not based on meid or esn on this phone. I had 2 different marquees activated one, cancelled, activate new, = same msl.

It must be accounted linked I guess, must be the reason the converters and terminal didn't work to retrieve it

Have you ever retrieved an MSL from a Marquee that had not been activated yet? I wonder if it the SPC was indeed supposed to be 000000? (which would then change once the phone activates)

my old one changed to a complete different one, ive never had one be 000000 since my old lg flip phone lg-vx8500 i believe lol

thanks for the reply and link. looks like i may have bricked my phone. it's stuck on the screen with the open box and the android robot below. the progress bar beneath that isn't moving and the screen flashes every so often but nothing is happening. if i pull the battery and put it back, it just goes to the same screen. i tried installing the zip from Rom Toolbox. what should i do to fix this?

Well you should have installed the .zip with CWM not ROM Toolbox. I am not quite sure how to fix this issue, unless you have CWM and can power off then hold power + Volume Down for 10-30seconds (give it time) and reboot into recovery. Is that a possibility?

hi - ya i know i messed up. doesn't look like i can boot into recovery. i get a message that flashes on the screen too quick to read. but what i've been able to catch says something like this:

E: unknown volume for path (SD Card E: can't mount sd card boostupdate.zip

main 961 copy path null

finding update package...

--there's a few words i'm missing because it goes by to fast. but after that message, it just hangs on the same screen as before with the open box and the arrow coming out of it and the android beneath. any ideas? ?thanks for trying to help me. .... damn!

Hmm, Yeah I am not sure about what to do on this.. Sorry I couldn't help.. I have seen this issue once before when I first got my Marquee and joined this board back in Feb. I am not sure what came of it though. I'd look through the LG Marquee and All Root Guide Threads and see if it has been mentioned. I know there's a lot to go through but, maybe there is an answer. If not maybe a dev on here will see the post and be able to help. Again sorry I couldn't help ya out man.

thanks for the suggestion. couldn't find anything so far and i'm going cross-eyed. i did get an email from the place i bought the phone and they agreed to send me a free replacement. but will they be able to tell i rooted this phone when i send it back? and if so, what will happen? will they charge me for the replacement? at this point they're sending the replacement free, but i'm wondering what happens when Boost ultimately gets this bricked one back. will there be any hiccups when activating my new phone with my current phone number? what a mess.

Wow, I told boost a week after I got my phone there was issues and they didn't wanna send me out a replacement at least not the Marquee unless I paid the $100 Insurance Deductible. In any case I have heard some people have sent Sprint phones bricked back and they never said anything about it. I am guessing you would be ok, but cannot be certain. In the mean time let's see if a dev comes across this post and see if they have any insight.

**EDIT**
I found the post I was talking about earlier, or least one of them. Check this out:

thanks for finding that. one post describes my problem exactly, but then they go on to imply that they were able to start the phone in recovery or something because they mention to plug the phone into the computer and choose 'charge only' not 'mass storage' or something to that effect. i'm paraphrasing, but i can't even get my phone past the boot loop. hopefully someone has some insight. i guess it's good the replacement is coming if nothing else. but still really bummed. i'm still gonna want that new phone updated and rooted and hopefully have better luck with that one. i'm a little paranoid to do this all again now
