are you sure its not the cable instead? within the first two weeks of having the EVO the oem cables port became loose. first i would go to sprint and just test with another cable. and if you have sprint TEP then they will replace it.

Recently my evo charging port has a short in it....i have to adjust it so it will charge. My ? is. If i take it to sprint will they replace it? Because my girl had a Treo 800W and they wouldnt replace it. This will suck if i would have to pay $100 for something i didnt do.
I had the exact same issue with my evo purchased on launch day....I took it to the sprint repair store and they replaced it on the spot. Before taking it to sprint I did a lot of research and from what I understand, if the port stops charging all together, it will be deemed broken from abuse. If it charges with some rigging then its deemed a defective port and is then covered under under the manu warranty.
You should take that phone to a sprint repair store right away....

Took mine to a sprint store today, started having charging issues last night. They are shipping me a new one free, but the tech said that it did look like damage and not a manufacturer's defect. Personally, if you are using a product normally and it breaks, that may not be a defect in materials, but it is a defect in engineering and design - which is part of the manufacturing process.
It helped that I also brought my daughter with me and signed her up for an Epic on our family plan.
My evo will only charge now if contorting the cable - if it's laid down slack, no charge.
To combat this I'm buying an external charger, so all I need to do is pop a battery in my phone in the morning, and if the tales are true of the 3500mah batteries, I should be able to make it all day without needing a charge
USB ports are for ROOTING not for CHARGING!

Thought my charging port was busted until I used the car charger with it and it worked fine. Going to go grab a new cable from sprint tomorrow.

I too suffered from a broken charging port and had to pay $100 dollars to replace (I went through the same crap most of you did with HTC and Sprint)
Similarly to others, my phone was launch day as well. And upon receiving my new replacement Evo, the quality difference between both is significant. The screen and speed of the phone are remarkably better.
My new one is way better and hey at least I have an extra battery, 8gb card, and CHARGER! Not a horrible waste of the $100 at least.
It seems to me many of the launch day phones were cheap. I am blaming my charge port break on 2 things. 1) Radio shack car charger. Cheap quality and i think could tug on the charging port
2) cheap hardware on HTC side, albeit my new one is better

I had people on a Sprint website laugh at me because I purchased micro-usb to mini-usb adapters at a price of $10 a piece from Radio shack so I could use micro-usb cables with my EVO. Well, those adapters are gold plated and I haven't had a single problem with the port on my EVO. I told people using cheap ass cables/chargers on an expensive phone would come back and bite them in the ass.
I experienced this charging problem for the first time last Saturday when trying to charge with my *SPRINT* car charger. I really didn't think anything of it because their charger seems to take 2-3 times as long to charge as the cable that came in the box. Well anyway, last night it started happening with the home charger and this morning the thing won't charge at all, even with wiggling. I'm heading to the Sprint repair store today and hoping that they will replace it as this looks more widespread than I thought.

This is a design flaw, pure & simple. If you haven't experienced it, yet, there's a good chance you will.
The charging port is soldered to the circuit board. It is not encased in plastic and affixed like it should be. After enough pushing and pulling the charging/mini USB jack in and out the port loosens up and eventually can become disconnected totally.
I bought a 1st day phone with no insurance. I really don't think Radio Shack mentioned it but I could be wrong. There was near bedlam in the store so maybe he did and I don't remember. I was too excited about the phone to consider it.
Anyway, two different Sprint repair stores I visited in person said I would have to buy a new phone as they would NOT open the phone up.
I said to hell with that. Found a brand new one, in the box, on CL for $350. Almost bought it.
Then found a non-Sprint repair shop that would work on it. She (the tech was a female and kinda sexy, btw) said she sees these a lot as "it's a poor design". She said the phone was too new so she couldn't get a replacement part but the port looked OK so she would try and re-attach it. She soldered it back and it works fine and, supposedly, is stronger than it was originally.
After stressing out for a couple of days I ended up spending $47, although I did purchase an outside-the-phone battery charger and an extra high capacity battery from Amazon so I won't have to use that port much, just for data transfer.

I thought mine was broken last night... turns out that somehow the surge protector I have my charger and other various electronics plugged into got switched off.
So I headed over to the Sprint store yesterday to see if I could get a replacement. After getting "I've never heard of this problem", he ended up taking it apart and looking at it and came back out and said they were going to order me another one.
They said they could get it in today, but most likely Monday.So the question I have is, what is the best way to back everything up? Is there any way to backup Texts and such without rooting?

A little backstory: I pre-ordered my Evo in May and convinced many people to switch to Sprint and get the Evo. I made Sprint and HTC a pretty good amount of sales here. Just showing a little bit of input I gave to these companies and how much I trusted them both.
Fast forward to July, my phone which I had in full shield and case not to mention I BABIED this phone constantly, stops charging out of nowhere. I went to a Sprint repair center and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. So I call HTC and explain my problem, she says it's fine for them to replace it under warranty as long as the warranty stickers are in tact and there is no water damage. So I send the phone off.
A week passes with no call from HTC. In the mean time I am using a Hero and it's making me miserable. I won't even get started with that. Anyhow I NEED my Evo back since I use it for work (Exchange and Remote Desktop are best friends for a technician in I.T.) so I call HTC.
"A technician will be contacting you shortly, but they're not repairing it. This is a very common issue amongst Evo owners but it's because of abuse and neglect."
Common issue? Hello..? This is clearly a manufacturer defect and not completely cause by users if it's THAT common. No phone I have EVER owned had this issue.

I get off the phone with this rep and wait for my phone call. Nothing.
After a day or two I call back again, they tell me they "assumed I just abandoned my phone" and give me a spiel about how it's going to cost me $240 to fix the phone. I humbly decline and just ask for my broken phone back. I end up having to PAY A FORTY DOLLAR TRIAGE FEE just to get my broken phone back.
At this point I am so ticked, I just want my phone back and pay the stupid triage fee. I am then promised a 3 to 5 business day expectancy to receive my phone. A week later, still no phone. I call HTC once AGAIN. The phone hasn't even been shipped yet; HTC can't even fulfill their own promises. I go into a week long process of calling every... single... day. "Hello... Has my phone shipped yet?.... Why not?... Can you find out why?... WHY NOT?"
It get's "escalated" to a different department which requires a 5 to 7 business day turn around for a response. By this time, I am in complete disbelief of the incredibly awful customer service from such a big company.
Finally after constant legal threats about holding my $500 phone hostage and multiple supervisors spoken to later, I'm finally promised a ship date and a call back confirming it was shipped. Would you be surprised by this promise date that I *gasp* DIDN'T GET A CALL BACK?
I call myself once again, and yes she confirms it was shipped. I asked out of good customer service that any other reasonable, decent company should give if I could have my triage fee reimbursed. "No. We do not reimburse triage fees" ok, not very fair considering the trouble you've put me through and the promises you have broken, could I get next day shipping to get it back soon? "No. It is being sent FedEx Ground."
Nothing? I get NOTHING out of all this bull crap except my $40 stolen and a month without my phone? I can guarantee that my constant calls to get updates cost their company more than my measly $40. It's a matter of principal. Satisfy your customer. HTC did not give a rats fuzzy rear about anything. They had my money, they blew me off.

In any event, I called Asurion who sent me a good phone in a matter of two days. Got the good and the bad on the same day with timing and sent off the bad to Asurion.
I now have a working phone after my $100 deductible and my $40 make-me-miserable fee from HTC.
It was a month long nightmare and the entire time I had to deal with the slow, freezing, practically useless Hero.
After all the sales I got for HTC I completely regretted it and vow to never get a phone from HTC ever again.
As a matter of fact, being an IT professional I am constantly asked about gadgets and gizmos. I used to CONSTANTLY recommend HTC phones and I will never do that again either. The way they have treated me will end up costing them a lot more than they realize. The power of word of mouth is amazing and a strict example of why you always take care of your customers.
Totally unacceptable; I've had some bad customer service before but this was seriously unbelievable.

Why do people get bent out of shape when they are the one who did something to damage the EVO? HTC expects you to buy a case, use a protector, and not use cheap ass plugs/chargers. If the phone stops charging, I can promise you that someone damaged their phone from being cheap.

^^^ This does not sound like the case here, with a lot of people reporting the issue.

So you send your phone to a company and they go, "Hey you abused your phone now you must pay to fix it." So it's HTC fault you didn't take care of your phone? I'm telling you people used cheap ass cables/chargers to try and save a little cash on accessories after purchasing the EVO. Well that crap has come back to haunt some folks. Or people were trying to jam their cable end into the port the wrong way. I can easily see that happening. People come to this forum looking for a sob story. I have had my EVO since day 1 and its in Afghanistan with me. What am I doing right of which everyone else is doing wrong with their EVO?

You are making a HUGE assumption on the part of a lot of other people.
I'd advise you to keep quiet unless you have PROOF that they abused their phones.
It is not unheard of to have manufacturing defects.
Just because you may have gotten a phone that had good quality assurance, does not guarantee that others did. So why be so quick to condemn other people when you have no idea of how they treat their phones? Several people here have stated they baby their phones, I have no reason to doubt them because it's highly unlikely these people are all in some sort of conspiracy to defraud Sprint / HTC or fool us.
PS are you in the military or a contractor in Afghanistan? If you're in the armed forces, thanks for your service.
All it takes is for someone's foot to catch the cable as it charges the EVO and BAM you damaged the charging port. Or you are constantly trying to shove the cable into the port the wrong way. Have you dropped your EVO lately? Yeah, that could knock the port loose as well. All it takes is one good drop or constantly using the wrong cable to cause this problem. It's not a freaking defect. I'm for certain machines put these phones together and I HIGHLY doubt a machine caused this port problem. If you had a weak port you would notice it from day 1!
