Built in tethering via Bluetooth!

I always use this method when traveling. I will get a layover in an airport that does not have free interent and just use my phone. I dont even have to take it out of my pocket. I used it as my primary internet for a few months when I first moved into my house a couple of years ago, was only on a 10 dollar a month media plan then and averaged 8-10 gigs a month 3 or 4 months in a row.:cool:

I personally am not going to worry, if you use the 3g Mobile Hot Spot app it tells you it is going to charge you. You can always play the ignorance card once, Joe six-pack is not supposed to be intelligent.

In other words if they bill me for it I will complain that I didnt know any better and most likely they will drop the 20 dollars from my bill, but I will not be able to do it again.

I am confident that no charge will apear on my bill, but I can not guarantee.
 
I can get connected just fine using XP on my laptop. But I get no name resolution. Seems that the DNS request goes no where. Anyone else able to get this working? :confused:

I imagine it is pretty substantial, I usually only use it for brief periods unless I have it plugged in. I can tell you that when I would do it on AT&T network with my Tilt, it would really chew through battery.

I have IP and DNS both set to obtain automatically. I couldnt get it to work a minute ago and found the problem to be wifi on on the Droid, so check that. Wifi must create some kind of loop or something.

That was it... I turned WiFi off on the Droid X and I was able to tether. Yeah!

I can't get my ubuntu machine to recognize it now. It will link up and connect just fine, but it does not give me any internet.
 
for some reason i can't get to the BT settings in control panel. all i am able to do is look at an empty screen list of BT devices on my computer and its only a couple of years old (2008)... any help?

What''s the range? Doesn't BT have a fairly short range? When I tethered with wifi I could place my phone down the hall in an office that got a 3g signal would I be able to do that with BT?

How would they know if you where tethering or just regularly surfing the net and pulling in data on your phone with apps?
 
This is a pretty big deal- One of the major reasons many of us root is to get tethering. Although Wifi would be nicer, BT is ok for me. Unfortunately I can't connect my wife's iPad and havent tried her Macbook, but my WinXP and Win7 machines connect just fine using this- without installing anything on the laptops like PDANet or EasyTether. Speeds are reasonable too!

Yes- Battery life will suffer as with any tethering- you are using your 3G connection and your bluetooth or wifi connection pretty heavily to tether.

I can get to "Show Bluetooth Devices" but where is "connect using" and then "access point".?

In the "Show Bluetooth Devices" I see an icon for my X but not a "connect using"??
 
i get the same problem as credemann. I can see my droid x under bluetooth devices, but when i right click on it, i only get "remove" or "properties" and during the installation wizard, it was trying to find the drivers for my Peripheral Bluetooth Device and couldn't find any... idk whats going on, any help? plus, how do i right click and get "connect using"????
please HELP!!!!

hey guys i think i figured it out (or at least did something that made it work in my case)... On the BT icon on your bottom right, right click and click "Join a Personal Area Netork" and this should open a window where you can join with your BT device and then follow it through to the end and thats what did it for me, i didn't have to click "access through", but i guess i took a different route that did the same thing!

I have not gotten the "bluetooth peripherals" driver installed either. I want to because i want to use my HTPC audio from my phone. I am going to do a little more digging on this over the weekend, I am working nonstop till then.

didn't see anyone answer you Mac... just made sure both device and computer were discoverable, paired them and just click on send file or connect to network. that simple. i found this thread because i was looking for some info on why i can't transfer a .apk file through BT. this is my first smart phone that i'm toying around with, i didn't get a chance to customize my incredible...

THANKS!!! drybin!!! This worked for me! I do not know how to post the speedtest.net screen picture but I'm getting Download 0.44 Mb/s Upload 0.31 Mb/s Ping 201 ms and the distance to the server is 900 miles.

As long as it works hey great. Thanks again drybin!! :D

Apple devices can connect from other Apple devices without any issue. If you have an iPhone4 and an iPad, you can use bluetooth to turn your phone into a camera/video recorder for your iPad. As long as you are in the Bluetooth signal range, you can walk around with the phone and record video and/or take pictures with the phone that displays and stores on the iPad. Actually this is true, Apple has really locked down there bluetooth interface, they do not have many standard bluetooth spec protocols, and severely limit developer access.

This is one large reason several long-time mac developers I know are slowly leaving iphone as a platform for contract business. Sure they still do it if someone pays, but more and more costumers are wanting to interact with embedded devices via blue tooth, and iphone OS just won't play that game. That and the $4 per that they charge if you use their frackin connector.

Wow, GREAT post. Thank you so much, it is truly that easy on the mac. Pair, and then click the connect to network. I had no idea it would be so easy. So we aren't going to get charged for this?

Here at work I'm getting .68 Mb/s down and .33 Mb/S up... Seems a little slow, but definitely works for news/e-mail browsing.
 
Thought I'd post my experience with battery life while BT tethering. I tethered my laptop all day (8 hours) via BT. I also downloaded 12 15mb podcasts on the xPhone, and listened to three hours of audio. I still had 30% battery life after all this.
