Help Call quality very sub-par (not signal strength)

How smart "phones" are designed today:

Internet - Check. SMS - Check. Gmail - Check. Widgets - Check. Ok, we're ready to ship this baby off to manufacturing! WAIT - WAIT. What about the phone? Oh, yeah...the phone... Hmmm...No problem, just give us a few minutes - I'm sure we can throw something together...

LMAO. Pretty well sums it up though or at least that's how it seems.

It's a great device otherwise - and you might not get one of the bad ones. It's still worth pulling the trigger.

Well, I always seem to report the bad on here, so I'm happy to finally report the good! I found a Best Buy with a couple Dinc's in stock. So, I ran over for a replacement. Had one coming in the mail from Verizon, but I wanted a replacement that was guaranteed to be new. Anyways, the sound quality is much much better! So, I can honestly say, those who are reporting that theirs are crystal clear, probably are - and those who are reporting garbled / digitized / clipped voices on the other end, are telling the truth as well.

I've been on both sides now, but happy to finally enjoy ALL of my Dinc. Woohoo!

I agree with all the users. The phone is great but the voice quality is horrible. We got two phones for the company and it is bad. I switched from AT&T and let go of my iPhone. I love the Inc but the problems do not help. Apple specs from yesterday added to the frustration. HTC you have till June 14th to fix this, if not all your 30 day customers or less will swith back to AT&T and get the iPhone that actually can hold charge pass 2pm. Anyone else going back to iPhone?

Love the phone, just not how the sound goes. Cannot run my business

I honestly was slightly contemplating going back to my iPhone, until I was able to get a hold of a better Dinc replacement yesterday. The sound quality is much better. As far as the battery, I purchased a Siedio 1750 and it arrived today. So, I'm hoping it helps. It took 3 handset replacements and a third-party battery, so I am jumping through hoops. But, I've been pretty patient because I don't want to go back to AT&T. I get a good signal now in places where I didn't before. And despite the marketing campaign, my 3G speeds are consistently faster on Verizon in the Chicago area. And Steve Jobs can keep that new phone. Nothing too impressive there. I'll admit though, HTC does have a quality control issue that they need to address.

I would get the new IPhone except AT&T sucks where I live. I love DINC but the signal still suck eggs. Maybe I'll wait for the Shadow. Held the Evo4 but that thing is freaking huge.

Call quality on my EVO is horrible. Earpiece speaker sounds tinny, and has a lot of crackle. Compared to my Incredible, there is a night and day difference.

The in call volume is also very low compared to the Inc. If I enable the hearing aid, audio quality is even worse.

I don't know if the problem is with this particular EVO, or if this is a common issue.

I have contacted HTC's office of the president. They did not feel like talking to me either.

File complaints with FCC at this address fccinfo@fcc.gov and post your case number here in this post.

My number is:

CIMS00002655483

Good luck!

I have great call quality, finally. I say finally because I had two Motorola Droids before that were returned for awful call quality. And I LOVED my droid. I loved the keyboard. But no one could understand me when I talked. I could hear them clear as a bell, but got tired of repeating myself.

I took a chance with the Incredible, and thrilled that I did. Love this phone.

What I did learn from the Moto droid threads was, that the covers really do affect the sound quality if the cutout holes are not exact.

Having call quality problems as well.

One thing I noticed with my Droid prior to "upgrading" to the Incredible is that my call quality went to crap with the OS upgrade. Wonder if the OS is the problem since my Incredible just sucks.

I'm having problems too. I just got my phone in the mail a couple days ago after being backorder for at least 3 weeks, and it started breaking up today.

At first, everything seemed fine. However, today I was out walking around talking to my mother (both of us live in big cities), and the call was constantly breaking up, even when I was outside. Sometimes I could hear clearly but she said I was breaking up, sometimes it was breaking up on both ends, and sometimes as I was walking there were brief periods where it was clear and fine. Thinking back, I had another call this morning that had some break-up problems, but it wasn't as bad, so I didn't think anything of it.

I just switched from an LG chocolate, and despite the other problems with the phone, I never had issues with the service. I've had Verizon for years, and I've never had that much break-up where neither of us could understand what the other was saying. I'm going to Verizon either tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully I can get it replaced. Sucks that even if they do replace it, I won't get it for a while since it's backordered.

I had a Verizon technician tell me that HTC engineered the phone to have a low SAR output, and that this is causing the reception issues with the phone. In other words, the phone was designed to have a lower power output to make it safer for those people who are concerned about SAR levels, and this same design is causing the poor reception issues. NOT TOO SMART, HTC engineer MORONS!!!!

so this is covered under warranty? i seem to be suffering from the same problem, but i only just now realized how much i've been repeating myself...

Ok, so I contacted Verizon last week and spent a half hour on the phone with customer service & tech support. They filed a problem ticket or what ever they call it asking really annoying questions, like specific call times & length of call and who I called, ect

I just gave tech support a call to see if they have any updates from when I spoke with them about a month ago. Tanisha reviewed her documentation and stated that an update was posted yesterday (6/15) that Google is aware of the issues and is working on a fix. The description in the documentation matched the complaints most people are having where it sounds like you're in a tunnel, or garbled and random parts of the conversation were dropping out.

Tanisha then transferred me to Ryan who clarified a little more...He went on to say that they have this problem with other Android devices as well and that it is a problem with the Android OS rather than the device and the headset speaker. As Tanisha stated, he went on to indicate that a patch is being developed by Google and will be pushed through like the Exchange patch was shortly after the release of the DInc. He went on to comment that he has the same problem with his Eris.

Sorry I don't have any life-altering updates to provide, other than it sounds like we might be getting closer to a software update, with no known estimated release date.

The fact that Google is acknowledging the problem as Android related is great news! I've been seeing similar reports of poor call quality on other device forums (including the Droid) for some time now.

Hopefully, this is an issue that can be fixed QUICKLY before Android's reputation is ruined by all of the negative feedback and returns. I'm totally frustrated by this problem. Love the device...hate the phone!

BTW - my last message from Verizon said they were aware of the problem and working on a fix but had no idea when that would happen. But they did say it was well documented on my account that my wife and I were having an issue. My advice would be to keep bugging Verizon until this is fixed. The more they hear from you the better the chance that you'll get a resolution. Oh, and I did save the Verizon voice message that said they were aware of the issue.

It's great news if they are working on a software patch to fix the problem. I hope it's true. Did they not test this phone before releasing it to manufacturing? I don't know what's worse - that they didn't know about the issue because of negligent testing or they knew about it and intentionally produced a defective product. It's really quite disgusting. Don't get me wrong, I expect and accept bugs in new devices. But basic phone functionality should be flawless. We certainly wouldn't accept a new car that ran rough and stalled. That's it's basic function.

I am on my second DINC and still have the same issue as I did with my first (My original complaint is on page 1 of this thread). I spoke to Verizon tonight again and, as others are reporting, they are now acknowledging the problem and that there is a fix, but no confirmation on the release date of it. They agreed to reset my 30 day exchange window (I switched from an ATT/iPhone) from when I received my replacement on 5/28. So basically, I'm giving them a little over a week to get the update out. Then, if it's not available, bye-bye DINC. I'd hate to have to do it because everything else about it is great, but jeez...it's a phone man...that part has to work.

Also, I finally received a response from HTC elevated technical support today. I had railed on the phone in a survey and apparently they are listening. They sent me an email indicating that they tried calling me today but my phone was no longer in service, and added they hoped I hadn't returned my device. I remember a number of 000-000-0000 coming up on my caller ID today but I didn't answer (who would answer that number anyway?). It coordinated with being a few minutes prior to the email being sent saying they tried to contact me, so I'm pretty sure it was them. Anyway, I responded indicating that the number they called was indeed still in service and that they should try me again, so we'll see if they call back and what they have to say.

Bottom line, it appears it's a big enough complaint that they are now doing something about it and it definitely appears to be software related. Verizon told me they were directed not to replace the phones anymore for this issue since it would not be corrected with new hardware, but rather an upcoming software update.

We'll see.

I think HTC and Verizon is ****ing with us with these imaginary software OTA updates. Now it's Google fault? Can u say conspiracy?

But do we think this is the same issue as the phone having very low volume? i didn't have the other issues of the garbled speech, just the dropped calls and very low volume...i wonder if the update will fix this as well

I got Verizon to finally admit that there is an issue with the earpiece sound quality on the Incredible. From this forum, I have learned that HTC has also admitted the same flaw. Question--Why aren't they working to resolve it???? I have a theory. Verizon tells phone manufacturers to design a phone based on their RIGID specifications. In these specs, I am sure Verizon mentions "and make it so each unit costs no more that xx dollars." So, therefore, HTC must use "cheap parts" to meet Verizon's budget monetary number for the cost to produce each unit.

I tried the Sprint HTC Evo in a corp Sprint store today, and guess what???? This phone's earpiece sounds PERFECT!! What a difference from the Incredible. They are both CDMA phones. So this means that HTC is certainly capable of making a good-sounding phone, IF ONLY cheap Verizon would let them use decent parts in the Incredible.

So what are the odds that Verizon will let us switch to a different device when you have had it for 60+ days? It isn't unreasonable to expect to be able to hear a conversation on this thing called a 'phone' and since the new ones won't be shipping until the end of July it might make the Droid X worthy of trying on 7/15.

Update - apparently they have 'like new' warranty replacements in stock and I should be receiving one on Wednesday. Hopefully it sounds a lot better.
