Help Call quality very sub-par (not signal strength)

well, called verizon, and they are refunding my return fees...Since i had originally called in several times to complain about the call quality issue, and eventually spoke to a tech supervisor, HE noted my account, and put on it to WAIVE the return fees; the manager, was just being a dick, even though he admitted he saw in the notes about waiving the fee's, he claimed he "couldn't"..The folks at corporate said he lied, that he could have..

What a jerk bait...

Mine is the same, crappy quality regardless if it's through a speaker or my headphones, regardless if I've edited the CDMA settings with the ##778 process. I have yet to hear back from multiple complaints to HTC and Verizon's Cust Service is now horrendous. I was told they could send me a new phone, but that I'd have only until the 28th to return it if there's a problem (since I was a preorder on the 28th). I'm 99% sure I'm returning the phone. I might buy it again, but I'm not taking the chance to get a replacement phone and get stuck with it. If I get another Incredible that stinks, I'll go back to the Droid.

Could someone please post an email address for HTC? I have filled out the web form multiple times and never get anything back. Some of you have gotten a personal response from them....

Thanks!

Make sure you get Customer Service to log-in your complaint within your original 30 days, that way you will be extended until they actually are available even if outside the 30.

I'm not so sure the vast majority don't have quality issues - they just don't notice or care. Also, I don't think many users have resolved the problem with an incredible exchange - it made no difference based on the posts I've read. Regardless, it's either a software or hardware issue - I honestly don't know at this point.

I'm curious if this really is a firmware issue or what, since the vast majority of users have no call quality issues whatsoever I would think this is more of a hardware issue. Especially since many users have seen improvements after switching their phone to a different unit of the same model. The fact that they're working on a soft-fix for this intrigues me.

If the issue turns out to be hardware, and it probably will, verizon will have to file a recall right? There's no way they could just leave it as is without a pr nightmare.

Do you want a bet? When is the last time Verizon recalled a phone? The problem is simply not serious enough. The phone does work. The fact that it reboots itself occasionally and that the voice quality is mediocre is not enough for them to do a recall.

Not if it's only on a relatively small percentage of units sold which is my guess is the case judging by the feedback I've seen.

Doesn't mean our issues dont need to be addressed, I just think we are in the minority of INC owners.

Well, they refused to extend anything for me, and since they also couldn't tell me when they would get any replacements, I returned it. When they tried to make me pay the $35, I reminded them that this is a known issue and that I did not feel it should be my expense when they could not provide me with a replacement. Polite, but very pointed. The manager did waive the fee. I think he could sense that I would have gone off in the store with all sorts of people listening. They already witnessed me complaining loudly whilst talking on the store's sample Incredible that I simply thought there was an issue with this phone and that it was a shame that Vzw rushed this model out without making sure it worked. Even the tech indicated that almost every new smartphone has started out with some sort of glitch and that early adopters kind of get hosed.

I preordered the EVO and will wait to see if the audio on that is any better. If it does the same thing, I will blame HTC. I was not impressed with the Eris when I had that, but I attributed it to it being a lower-end phone.

Interesting that I finally heard back from HTC yesterday from my original complaint three weeks ago via the web form. I am giving them an earful (or would it be eyeful?). We'll see what happens with that I suppose. If they could tell me they forced a patch or something, I'd be completely willing to try it again. I miss that phone!!

I actually got a phone call yesterday from someone at HTC trying to be helpful..
too bad the phone is gone, but I got her name and number, and she said they do end to end support for sprint evo, so I will save it just in case!

I hope it works out for you but PC Mag said the EVO had some audio quality concerns too, but liked the phone overall.

+1

I had two problems with my Incredible, one with Verizon and one with HTC. If they would release a fix for both of them I would definitely get another one.

Out of 100 reviews, they were the only ones who said that about the call quality, so I would ignore it..

True, but one review (I think it was phonescoop) commented on the radio performance regarding the Incredible. I guess we'll be finding out soon enough. I hope the EVO is successful.

yeah, and fortunately, not everyone has the problem with call quality on the Incredible..Unfortunately, me and my wife had it, so its gone...If the EVO ends up having the same issue, then I dont know which way to turn....

my quality has always been pretty good, however when i talk to my friends on at&t they just sound a little "muffled" (my nokia sounded the same way) i sound great to them but at times it is hard to hear them even though the volume is cranked. i haven't done a prl update or anything else, but i did go in and turn on HAC (menu->settings->Call->Hearing Aids). strangly enough it didn't increase the volume like it says but the "muffled" i was hearing went away completely. Now when i talk to my wife on her eris (before doing this) it was clear just a little quiet for me (maybe all those years of loud music is finally making me deaf), with the HAC turned on it also sounds a little crisper, still not loud though.

people having problems though you might want to give HAC a try, it takes 2 seconds to do and doesn't require any kind of restart.

well after much thought i am turning my phone in for a new one. I spoke to someone who was so wonderful. Vzw has great customer service, that is the main reason i stay with them. my 30 days are up tom, so i had to act fast. I am not sure if they are charging me a restocking fee, i will call them tom. and find out...i hope this helps, i told them i live in nyc and it's very loud, and if i can't walk around the streets of manhattan and be on my phone and hear then that is a problem. i hope my new one is better...

When you call them tomorrow, it might be a good idea to check and see about extending your 30 day return window just in case the replacement phone doesn't fix your issue(s).

I hope HTC releases a fix soon for call quality, when I picked up the phone today my first call it almost sounded like some one was talking to me under water! It's dealable, but if you are being sold the top of the line phone for 200 dollars with a 2 year contract and 600 dollars with no upgrade then you better be getting the best of everything.

welcome to the incredible nightmare...take it back and try another one asap, cause it aint gonna get any better!

It was always my understanding that if the phone has issues and you return it for the same model, you would not be charged a restocking fee. If you just plain out return the phone, I believe they do charge a $35 restocking fee. I even hear that mentioned on the VZW commercials.

If any of you have visited the moto forums (at moto.com) there is a huge thread about users complaining about poor sound quality with the Droid. To date, nothing has been done by either moto or vzw.

So, if you have call quality issues and you're expecting the situation to be handled differently with the Droid Incredible, it ain't happening.

just hoping that its not a problem with ALL HTC phones,,I have a EVO 4G coming next week, and I will freak if that sounds horrible too..

I wanted to update everyone on my situation. I ordered my replacement phone two weeks ago and they said it would ship in two days. I barely got it yesterday. I have tested my new phone and its call quality is awesome. I don't know if its a new speaker or I just got a bad one before but my confidence in Verizon is back to 100% I am completely happy with the replacement and will remain Verizon customer for years to come. My phone speakers sound awesome and crisp. Hope you guys that are awaiting replacement get the same results.

thats great news, and lets hope that can happen for most folks..there are alot of people who said their replacements were as bad as their original ones..

Out of curiosity, how did the replacement thing work? I do not want to be without a cell phone. Ive heard that Verizon does not ship you a replacement first, Like ATT does, but you have to ship your phone first and then wait for a replacement. Is that true?

I bought mine at Best Buy, and unfortunately, they are all out of stock so I have no way of just going and swapping it for a new one.

I decided to send an email to HTC about this issue:

"I have 2 of the Droid Incredible's & each phone has very poor call quality. My calls sound choppy/digitized. Will there be an update to fix this signal/call quality problem?"

Their generic response:

Thanks for contacting us. Reception strength on phones are constantly in flux and as a result, the signal bars displayed are only an approximation and do not always exactly represent the actual signal strength. We are investigating how to improve the accuracy, however your phone has been tested with the most stringent of standards and is of the highest quality. Thanks again for reaching out to us.

Ok, so where in my email am I referring to the signal bars? And if it was tested with the most bla, bla, bla, would we be in this thread right now? Anyway, they know theres a problem but their obviously dodging it as much as possible. This phone is a marvel, and i'm not giving up on it. I just want to
know if its something they can actually fix.
