Root Cannot install OTA on stock EVO

I have an EVO that was rooted and running the Gingerbread leak. When the OTA was released I SBF'd back to stock 2.2. Now trying to install the OTA, it keeps failing. Any ideas what I did wrong?

(I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate thread. I did try to search for similar threads first and didn't find any)

As asked before, did you unroot it before trying?

A root, even with a stock Froyo 2.2 ROM, may not be compatible with the newest official update for the Evo.

You would need to unroot then try.

Are you saying that you tried updating via the phone's official place to update or also by online? If not by the phone, try downloading the update online and updating your phone manually. Go to Sprint's website and search for the manual 2.3 update for the HTC Evo 4G.

If you try to update while you are rooted, something may go wrong regardless of which ROM you use:
-You may permanently lose root
-You may destroy the phone's internal system
-You will definitely lose the root
-You might "brick" your phone at worst

I highly recommend visiting the thread here for "Rooting for Dummies" and seeing about following the steps for unrooting then try updating.

I tried updating over my new replacement I got a few days ago, Thursday, and it kept telling me that there were no new updates.

Make absolute sure that you want the official update before you just go out and get it. It might be months before people find an exploit to finally be able to root it. And make sure you don't update anything else.

Sprint Lovers is 2.3 ??

yeah that is an error sprint lovers is froyo 2.2. fresh however has a new gingerbread rom just released a few days ago.

and like everyone said DO NOT ACCEPT THE OTA while you are still rooted. a whole lot of issues will come of it if you do.

Thanks for all the quick replies, I don't have the phone on me today, but I will double check that it's not rooted tomorrow.

The EVO in question is not rooted and is running the stock Android 2.2 RUU. The only part of the phone that is not stock is Clockwork Mod Recovery (I didn't know about this earlier). So I'm thinking it's definitely Clockwork Mod that is preventing the OTA from installing. When attempting to install it just goes to a screen with the Android exclamation mark and then requires a battery pull to reset the phone.

Is there any way to remove Clockwork Mod and restore the stock Recovery or whatever is supposed to be there (I have heard that the stock Recovery is no Recovery at all)? I have been unable to locate solid instructions on how to do this (if it is even possible).

Any help (or a pointer to a helpful thread) would be greatly appreciated!:)

Being as it is still on 2.2, do you want to root or stay unrooted? What is your current hboot?

I have the same exact problem....I want to to unroot my phone and just install the ota of android 2.3 for the evo 4g. Can anybody help me??

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
you can't re-root after this, just so you know. to me the ota is kind of meh nothing amazing, very disappointing and there are a lot of issues that you can't fix when you are unrooted. so are you sure you want to do this?

Thanks for giving me the link to rooting for dummies....i know hot to root and unroot my evo, i'm just trying to figure out what the android with the white triangle and yellow exclamation point means. I does that when i try to boot in recovery.

it means that you have either a broken custom recovery or you have a stock recovery and do not have access to it. so it depends on where you are at as far as unrooting goes.

Okay EVO is fixed!!! I flashed back to Android 2.1, then did a factory restore, then used the utility to flash the Android 2.2 RUU, then did another factory reset. Then I downloaded and installed the Android 2.3 OTA and everything works great now!
