Root Can't get root access with Gingerbreak apk 1.2

I've got a stock "V" with 8g and stock 2g sd card. Downloaded Gingerbreak apkv1.2 the first time with 8g card installed, used supermanager to open and install. Ran the exploit and attempted to install superuser. I gave up on it after 25 min. . Cleared it off system and sd card. Tried to download from different source(there ain't but one). Downloaded again, 2g installed, but this time put on root of sd card. 2nd attempt, gave up after 20min. Cleared again but reformatted the sd card to fat32. 3rd attempt, gave up after 15min. Any ideas or suggestions, or fixes? Edit: Downloaded root checker from the market just in case. Sorry, you dont have root access. Sorry, you don't have busybox installed corectly.

Well I really wanted to try this Gingerbreak apk, It seemed so "Nuub" proof. After bricking the first one(used SuperOneClick v 1.4.?-Full root, was supposed to be for the "V" or so the site said)I'm extremely apprehensive. My sd cards are not cooperating so we will just have to try and not mess up on the code. I've already got everything installed, except SuperOneClick v1.6.3. I've look in the past but can't find it by itself. I do have ROMTools.v2.3.1 ,it should have 1.6.3 already right? Edit: Just checked, it does, can I use this and then run the mount /system r,w from it. If I just use the code to mount /system r,w how will I know if I'm successful.

Kay, this might be a dumb question, but you did have gingerbreak installed to the phone, not the sdcard when you ran it, right?
Also, remember to reboot between attempts.

I put it on the root of the sd card via the computer the last time. Then remounted sd card. The used a file manager to install. Still don't know where it was installed(I poked around in the files a little), Assumed that it was installed in the system. I couldn't find a thread that said anything else,so I assumed that was the proper procedure. Would you maybe know something better? Anything would help.EDIT: forgot the first time in between attempts but remembered the last

Hmmm...I guess all I can do is tell you what worked for me...

1. Download apk from xda (default into sdcard/xscope/downloads for me)
2. Navigate to said folder with (hmm..which file manager was i using then?) whatever file manager, doubt it matters, click on the newly downloaded apk, choose install.
3. Choose done, not open when install is done (probably not too critical, but there is stuff to do first, so why bother)
4. Go to settings-applications-manage applications-gingerbreak. if it does *not* say move to phone as an option, i assume that means it's installed on the phone already. If it is an option, move it.
5. Make sure you have USB debugging box ticked and your sdcard is mounted (might as well double check, right?)
6. I'm pretty sure I cleared my cache and killed any non-necessary apps/processes at this point, not that's it at all necessary or helps one iota, but I felt like if my phone had less to 'deal with', it would be happier and thus work better. (and it worked, so...hmm)
7. Open gingerbreak, hold your breath, cross fingers and toes, click that root button.
8. If it hasn't rebooted in like, 10 min, it's not going to, so stop it, rebooted, and try again. (i let it keep trying for like, 45 min the 1st time I did it, cuz I figured the whole 'this could take a few minutes' thing was just underestimating....it's not. Took like, 5 min. the 2nd time, lol)

That being said, it's been a month or two since I did this, and I did reread the xda post before I wrote this, but please go read the steps on xda to make sure I didn't leave out anything crucial! That also being said, I don't remember having to do anything real complicated, it was way easier than I expected, so it should be alright. Sorry you are having trouble with it.
Maybe make a logcat and send it to the dev if this still doesn't work?

Good luck, lemme know how it goes.

*edit-i know some of the steps i listed were really basic-not meant to be insulting to your intelligence or anything, just wanted to recreate my experience. Just FYI. :)

I'm sure it's probably just the sd cards,I read in (I think it was that thread) that it was particular about them and even how they were formated. The obvious sometimes escapes my attention, good tip about checking in settings if it can be moved to phone to make sure its installed on the system. Maybe I'll try one more time and check off on your list as I go.

Shot in the dark here, since I've never done it, but have you formatted your card with the phone instead of the computer? Or is that how you've been doing it?
Make the sdcard as close to stock as you can, I would say. I would guess that means no partitions, no nothing, stick it in the phone and use the 'format sdcard' option? Don't know much bout sdcards.....

I decided to reformat the sd card back to the default setting.Downloaded a fresh Gingerbreak apk. Put that on the root of the sd card. Installed and mounted the sd card. Used a file manager to install Gingerbreak.(I moved App2Sd to phone prior to rebooting and unmounting sd card, thought it would make it easier to check if Gingerbreak was on phone)Then checked if it was installed on phone,Yes. Ran exploit, went to make some tea, started this post,HEARD THE VIRGIN MOBILE BOOT TUNE!!!!!!!!!!ALRIGHT. Down loaded Busybox selected install. It said there was no room in the place it had picked.Bumer,bummer,bummer.At closer look it gave me another location option, selected it. All systems GO.EDIT: When I used root checker to check root in advanced setting it say's: Congratulations You have root access, but, just below that it say's Standard su binary location: /system/xbin/su: no such file or directory found. Then under that: Alternate su binary location: /sbin/su: Permission denied. I checked it against your screen shot you made and you didn't have the first line that I did. That was the last selection on the busybox installer that it gave me to make(the /system/xbin), so su should be there with r,w. I going to have to make sure about the su glich before I do anything at all. Almost, but not quite, what a drag!

Woohoo! Glad you got it working! As much as I hated that virgin mobile boot sound, it can be the music of the gods when you're trying something like this, or think you have bricked your phone or something, am I right? :)

Oh, and a reminder : gingerbreak does not install flash_image, so if you're going to need it you hafta dl it. (i mention this only cuz it caused issue for me and someone else in another thread)

su is not in the /system/xbin/ Edit:it in the /system/bin. What do I do with busybox or su binary. Edit: should I move su binary to the same file as busy box,I did notice a Gold badge with a red star in it on the file page. su binary is listed as rwsr-sr-x 25.65K(does this need to be changed?). /system/bin/ shows 139.21MB used,25.29MB free, r,w

lost me...JerryScript will have to take this one ;) (I'm guessing that's who the post was directed to in the first place)

No, you seem a lot more Tech savvy than me,I figured who ever got here first might be able to figure it out,Don't sell yourself short, your a lot smarter than the majority of all the "Nuub's" that I read about in these threads.Edit: I am really sorry: I forgot to thank you for that great heap of advice you gave me: would not have made it this far if it wasn't for you.

Yeh I remember(I'm not that old yet, close but not yet.)

Got to get some sleep, need to get up by 9:00 so I can be ready to help a couple of gentlemen with there bible studies. I won't attempt to do the rcovery or ROM until I'm positive the su location and rwsr-sr-x is O.K. Good morning!

Hey sadielynn or JerryScript or anybody with a rooted "V" that can check with a file explorer. Where is your su binary located and what is the r,w script next to it ie:mine says its rwsr-sr-x.

What happens when you type su in Terminal Emulator? You should get a # sign. If you do, you are good to go. You did download SuperUser by ChainsDD from the market after running Gingerbreak?

I dunno about su binary, but for me 'su' is in /system/xbin and under properties it says permission is rwx r-x r-x . I don't know if that's what you mean or not. Busy box is in the same place, if that matters. I know nothing about busy box, other than I downloaded busybox installer from the market and installed it cuz it seemed like I needed it.
Also, your more than welcome for the bit of help! I'm really glad to help, especially someone that helped me! And, yeah, I figured you remembered the bit about flash_image, but this stuff slams you with and overwhelming amount of stuff to do and remember (at least that's how it felt to me) so I figured I'd throw it out there.
What does root checker say? If it says everything worked right, I'd say it's all good.

JerryScript - i think gingerbreak automatically installs superuser when you run it, but I could be wrong..

edit: just read your edit about root checker, so NM that part above. I don't know anything about moving system files around or changing the permissions, unless that is what that 1st line of code or whatever I was typing in Terminal Emulator was doing....? The mount -o remount, rw -t yaffs2 /system /system thingy?

The reason for my concern is the info that rootchecker gave me then (just before the 1st "V" bricked),and now is the same. I'm going to read up a little more on things the I'm going to put the su binary( "su" ) in the same folder with busybox. Then change the rwsr-sr-x to rwx r-xr-x if it doesn't do it when I move it. Thanks for all the help. AndyOpie150 Edit: I think it would be wise for me to do the mount /system r,w before going too far as you mentioned.

Yeah, I'm guessing su should be in xbin, but I honestly don't know much about what any of those folders actually mean or do, so who am I to say? Nor do I know what exactly the mount -o etc thing is actually doing, but if it sounds right to you, go for it. Best of luck- I'm rooting for you! (haha, rooting, no pun intended)

Thats to funny. Back on topic: I know I saw something about the su binary somewhere, but in the last month and a half I been in 5or 6 site's and read close to 200 posts. I'll just have to google it.
