Captivate release

Not to get to off topic but you do realize that if it is a corporate store we have no control over our pricing. The prices change usually monthly and for example my market currently has no "free" phones in-store. It has nothing to do with shelf space. It is just a rep talking out of their ass.

Back on topic, we don't have exact numbers yet but we are expecting probably 10 or less and I'm in a smaller store. I think we had like 5 Aria's on launch for example.

since you work for ATT store... can you tell us the off-contract price of the captivate?

I'd hardly call that a scam. If that's a scam then so is putting staple food items in the back of the store so you have to walk past a ton of other stuff, and then it's another scam to put impulse purchases at the checkout counters.

If they don't put free phones out there then someone will probably just as willingly buy a $20-30 phone. It's called marketing.

See Shocker's post number 19 on Hands on BGR thread. I am having a very hard time finding they are going to sell this phone that cheap. Shocker's post:

Our phone at work definitely had it. Checked today

Not a big issue, but just use to it responding more rapidly. Overall nice phone though. Still trying to confirm off-contract price; if it is really $350, I'm buying it.

Confirmed the 350 no contract price at work today with as many "higher ups" as I could and they said that is the price.

Just got off the phone with my ATT store and they don't have a demo unit yet. He actually phrased it as "we can't put it out yet".

At the ATT store near me, the rep said he had one in the back. He went in the back to check and said it was locked in the office. :(

I'm sure everything you said is 100% correct. ATT sets the prices and inventory, it has nothing to do with space, and the rep was talking out of his ass. :)

I probably should have been more clear. I'd prefer not to give my business to any ATT store.

My biggest concern is whether or not this has the same exact camera and camera software (or better) than the other Galaxy S pictures and videos currently online. Most are european forums but the video and camera seem great. Then I found a site comparing the ip4, inc or x, evo and galaxy. The galaxy finished 4th in pics and 2nd (i believe) in video. But I was still pretty happy with the pictures. But the camera on pics of the standard "galaxy s" seems to have a much larger lense. In fact, the back of the phone looks like what you'd expect a dedicated digital to look like.

There's only 4 reasons I'm considering this phone:

1: screen readability in the sun
2. better pictures/video
3. larger native storage
4. hardware supports longevity of use (os updates etc)

I prefer the look and size of the Aria, but those 4 are killers for me. I actually can live without #4. The geek in me will suffer, but it's not like without the latest os I'm going to really notice a problem. If the camera isn't at least as good as the already in-use galaxy s models posting to youtube and flickr then I'll still end up buying a dedicated camera and the smaller aria will make more sense (for me).

So, anyone know anything about the camera's performance?

The few pics I did snap on the phone looked crisp and clear and the video seemed not so bad as well (mind you this is viewing only on the phone itself). As far as the actual camera hardware or software I have no clue in comparison to the i9000. I would guess since the Galaxy S series is using pretty much all the same hardware/software it would make sense from a business standpoint to have them all be the same for the sake of cost. I do still wish it had a flash of some sort. After wanting to constantly throw away my iToy I really wanted my next phone to have a flash...oh well...there's always the Streak. Personally I'll still be carrying a point and shoot camera.

Yes, it was the i9000 that I was seeing discussed! I had the same feeling, that they'd just stick to the same hardware. One would think it'd be cheaper due to mass production, but then I saw a completely different camera lens.

I wish it had a flash too but then again I see tons of people saying that until you hit xenox flash you're just washing the image out. But then again the ip4 pics look brilliant...

I'd carry a dedicated as well but I notoriously dress as lightly as possible and even carrying one device is more than I really comfortably want. The winter time is the only time I have enough padding and pockets to be happy carrying tons of stuff. I wear swimming shorts with the netting cut off 24/7/365 in Maine.

I'm wondering what you are referring to when you say the Galaxy S lens looking much larger than the Captivate's lens. Just looking at pictures of the backs of both phones, they look to be pretty much the same size, and even in the same location. The only difference I can see is the area around the lens looking a little different. Here are pictures of the backs of both phones, first the Captivate then the Galaxy S.

Obviously it's a little difficult to make a direct comparison between the images, but it appears to me based on relative sizes and such, the lenses are basically exactly the same size. As stated above, I'm guessing most of the basic hardware stays pretty much the same between the different phones, so I'm guessing image quality will at least match the standard Galaxy S.

Hmm. The images I saw were much different but I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to easily find them again if I wanted to. I went to a ton of websites this weekend trying to find pics and videos taken with the Galaxy S. I'll give it a shot though...

Shocker- since you have had the phone in-hand, can I ask what you thought of the build quality? I know it's light weight (and that doesn't really phase me) but how about the quality of the case?

Got back from pre-ordering my Captivate from my local AT&T store. I was surprised when the guy on the phone said they were taking them, so it'd be worth calling yours, if you have one.

A couple other notes worth mentioning. 1) I was told the off contract price was $649.99, not $350. 2) This store has already had 37 pre-orders before I got there, so it might be hotter than I thought it would.

That's interesting. Our local AT&T store is not taking pre-orders. In fact, they said they probably wouldn't have them out and ready to sell until Monday or Tuesday.

If $650 is true, then T-mobile here I come.

I contacted AT&T near me and they said No preorders. In fact the guy was clueless about the phone.

Was it a corporate store or just a authorized reseller with the logo?

Build quality is above average. If I had to put a number on it 8/10. I actually wished the phone was heavier and maybe 1-2 mm thicker but whatever. My favorite part of the housing is how you remove the battery door.
