Root Captivate Root

hi, ive tried this several times now. i renamed the file, put it on the internal sd card, not in any folders. i disconnect the phone, turn it off, turn it on and try the reinstall packages and it tells me "e:can't open /sdcard/update.zip(no such file or directory)"

[PROGRAM] One Click Root / UnRoot / All Models for (Mac and PC) - xda-developers follow these instructions carefully, watch the video demo. It works, I did it on my first attempt and I am a newb. You must be missing something. Don't give up.

For those that were having an issue with the menu giving back something like "bad" or "cannot open," I'm unsure what caused it but it happened to me as well. I just deleted the file, redownloaded it and put it in the same place the "corrupted" one was in and it worked... weird..lol

Big ups for this being so simple to root!

well I finally rooted since my 30 days are up.

the root went smoothly (other than the fact that my phone will no longer mount to my desktop PC so I had to do it through my laptop)

unfortunately I dont understand any of that shit required to remove the bloatware so Ill just deal with it, at least I can take screen shots now, lol. maybe if I ever figure out how to change some of the visual things on the phone ill do that too.

Download titanium backup from the marketplace. Run a full backup: all user apps plus system data. Then in titanium backup you can uninstall the att junk. If something breaks you can always restore the backup. Rom manager makes this easier but you have to learn how to use Odin3 and put phone in download modem. Which you can do easily using the android adk.

yeah that android adk program sucks major balls, i dont like it at all.

ill check out that titanium backup stuff in a few mins, thanks!

Do it. Thank me later.

The adk makes it easy to get into download mode without having to press and hold buttons on the phone.
wait my bad, I was thinking about that SDK program

nope I wont, cause I dont want to use it. It removes things I dont particularly want to remove, so unless it allows you to select whats removed and what stays, I wont touch that with a 10 foot pole.

You could go into the file and remove the things that you want to keep.

Im having trouble getting into the recovery mode, im holding both the up/down volume buttons when powering up but it's just not going into the recovery mode. Any ideas?

Can anyone confirm what version of Superuser this installs? I have done this root but I am unable to find the version of Superuser this installs. I have seen where people have released a version 2.3.4 which looks completely different and I am having trouble installing it. I am not sure if there is an issue with the phone.

Rebooting the pc fixed this, i was able to adb to reboot it into recovery mode. Still cant get into it using the volume buttons though... wierd.

It worked for me. I had the same error message until I saved the file as update and let it put the .zip on as it saved it.

I'm playing around in the rom right now. I will get deeper into it all in the nights to come. Thanks for the tutorial and info.

It is tricky but I was able to get it while driving :D You have to keep vol up and down plus power held until you see the screen go black the second time. Then you release power while still holding vol up and down.

The Clockwork recovery mod app has a menu option to reboot into recovery from the device. It's called ROM Manager in the market. I suggest you get that and run the nandroid backup just in case.

Ok, did I do this right? I'm trying to root my new Samsung Captivate and I have the SuperUser App installed now, but when I drag one of the AT&T Bloatware Apps to delete it, it "deletes", but remains in the App tray.

  • I installed the Samsung USB drivers

  • Mounted the phone, Windows 7 recognized it as "Drive O:"

  • Once it was mounted I had the choices of (viewing them through Windows Explorer) "O:/Android", "O:/DCIM", "O:/media", no "O:/sdcard/sd", so I just copied the renamed zip, "update.zip" so it was just "O:/Update.zip"

  • I then disconnected the phone, powered down, turned it back on, booted into recovery mode, chose the "reinstall" option, it loaded, restarted, and I had the SuperUser App.

I loaded up the SupperUser App - just a black screen, which from my understanding is what it's supposed to be - so I went and deleted AT&T Navigator, only to find that it still won't delete. So I mounted the phone again and accidentally deleted the Update.zip.
What should I do and what did I do wrong? I don't want to turn off my phone. I know I haven't bricked my phone (a text just came in), but I would like to avoid that since I leave for school in a couple days and would like to not have to bring my Palm Treo 750 (and it's horrible WinMo6.5).

Sorry for the double post, but I figured out why I couldn't see the SD folder, it's a hidden folder.
Also, just to clarify, I used this video to help me through the process:
Daily Apper|Search Results

I just "reran" the root - still have the Super User App, but still can't uninstall the AT&T bloatware - is it more complicated than just pulling the apps to the trash? or is there more to it?

I rooted mine this morning, took seriously 10 seconds. I download the beast zip....changed to upgrade.zip. Put it on my SD card...rebooted with reinstall packages(or whatever it is exactly) no bloatware and can use my setcpu! :)

Got a question...when froyo comes out...will rooted users be fine to upgrade? or will we have to revert back to stock to upgrade it?

Thanks for the great info guys. I am getting the Captivate and I love to customize everything I can so this will help a lot.

And I cannot believe this thread. I have never in my life seen so many questions posted, answered, then asked AGAIN. I always read threads before I post to them but I guess a lot of people here don't. This thread would be half the size if not for all the people who asked questions that were already answered. Some questions were asked 5 or 6 times after they were already answered. There was even a question that was asked, answered, then asked again by someone else...all 3 posts were in a row. I just joined so I hope every thread isn't like this.

i originally purchased the Captivate the day it came out. I rooted it no problem by downloading the update file in opera mini, then renaming it,etc..I got rid of the phone for a while and just purchased a new one today.. i tried to root using the same method but it will not work.. does it have anything to do with the fact that the software is 2.1update1 and not the original 2.1??? When i rebbot im not getting the screen where you select superuser permission.. someone please help
