Root [CDMA] Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo 3D ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

Correct...Thank you ever so much for your assistance!!

Hey its no problem! I got a lot of good help here and love helping others when I can. I'm new to this myself but learned by asking a lot of questions and reading a lot. I'm no pro but I'm trying my best!

Download this: ics ruu

Run on your computer. Boot into fastboot and connect to your computer. Just go through all the prompts and instructions. Hopefully this will return complete stock Ics on your phone.

I am not sure if this will relock your bootloader. It will definitely remove your custom recovery im pretty sure. If it does lock the bootloader you can unlock again with the code you already got.

We will then have to flash custom recovery again and then just the supersu instead of a rom.

I do appreciate your help "very much."

I am downloading the RUU right now but I was able to flash Cool ICS sense ROM and that has brought it back to life. I am going to try to go back to stock unroot and just try to get su on stock rom.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I wish more people would share their results because it benefits everyone. People seem to be having more problems rooting from ics. It's good to have a reference of roms and recoveries that people were successful with. I hope we can get your stock rooted! It should work. But at least you know that something works so you always have something to go to if needed.

Hmmm. Try it one more time while booted into the system instead of from fastboot. Make sure that fast boot option in your power settings is unchecked and usb debugging enabled under application development.

What was the error?

Same thing happended again...should I dl that file onto the sd card? It says erro 155 unknown error...I think I know what it is, I am still unlocked and will have to relock to run the RUU...Am I correct?

I have heard mixed reviews about being unlocked or locked to run the ruu. It couldn't hurt to try it locked. You can always unlock again pretty painlessly. If you lock it, try it first with phone running then in fastboot if it doesn't work.

Sorry I was going to mention locking the bootloader but it slipped my mind. Have a few things going on and my brain is in a couple places at the same time.

I don't think you can run it directly from your sd card because you are s-on. Use fastboot command
fastboot oem lock

What roms can I install with hboot 1.5 s-on? I'm thinking of using 4ext but I want it to be easy.

4EXT is super easy. You can flash roms from the app even with s-on. Also when you boot into recovery for anything it is all touchscreen instead of using volume and power buttons. It's really good. I use it. I am s-off also btw. You should be able to flash any rom based off the ics build. Just don't flash a gb rom and you should be all good. There are tons of ics roms out there!

So, I don't need hboot 1.58 to flash ics? I remember reading in another thread about needing the newest firmware first. Do I need to be s-off with 1.5 to get ics or can I stay s-on?

Oh I'm sorry mitch! I was thinking you were ICS already. In your case you can flash gb roms and not ics roms. There is a way you can upgrade to get ics though. But there are some ics roms built on the gb build if you want to see what ics is like. I will post a link to one in a minute.

I went to ics from 1.5 but I am s-off. I think just from what I've learned that there is a way you can do it s-on but I've never tried so I couldn't promise it would work. If you want to go back and forth between the two I would recommend doing s- off wire trick. It isn't too hard. Watch a video to get the timing down.

Here you go: 2.17 gb based ics rom

This rom isn't stock though which you will see but it has some good features.

James, once again, thank you very very much for your assistance. I was able to relock, run the RUU, unlock and and flash super user 0.96v on th stock ROM. I really do appreciate the time to you took to assist me.

That's great! I'm so glad it worked for you! It was no skin off my back!

If you are hboot 1.57 don't run that ruu! Your phone is gsm right? That ruu is for cdma phones! I don't know if it could cause permanent damage but it isn't meant for your gsm phone!

New user, never rooted before. Registered to say thanks. This guide made it a breeze. A few things about the steps that I ran into:

Now go to HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader and fill out the forms and paste the code into the device identifier token box and submit. If you're having trouble with the HTC dev site, please disable any pop up blockers, anti-viruses, and/or firewalls (temporarily). You'll get an email (check your spam folder) with your unlock_code.bin
The website now has a drop-down box with a list of supported devices and download links for each device. Unfortunately, there is a high chance these RUU links will not work for people if they've updated over the air and will cause more confusion. The installer failed for me. There is a workaround:

Select "All Other Supported Models" at the very bottom of the supported devices drop-down box. Click next until it asks you to put in an identifier code as described above. Continue as the guide suggests.

Also, just below that.

The unlock token should give you a prompt to accept the unlock code or not on the phone. Push volume up to accept. The phone should now reboot for you (so that you'll be back in Android)
should be "Push volume up, and then press the power button to accept."

Thanks again. Amazing guide!

You say, "Alternately you can install the SU patch." Which, I downloaded but you give no instructions on how to install it or why? I have tried this step-by-step numerous times with the HTC EVO 3D with Hboot 1.58. I have gotten it unlocked and continually get caught in the bootloader even after flashing it numerous times. I have tried differed ROM mods and the phone goes into the bootloader each time. I always end up going back and doing a complete system re-install with the original stuff. Why won't this work?????? If this is the "complete newbie's guide," it sure is expecting a lot. I can't get S-off to work. I can't get anything going with this thing.

You install the super user patch the same way you flash any rom. So did you flash the stock rom? If so it already has super user included. Flashing the superuser patch instead of the stock rom basically roots your current stock rom and puts super user on your phone.

I would suggest using 4ext recovery. It seems to have less problems with flashing. You can download from my drop box.

Flash it the same way you flashed the other recovery in the tutorial.

Also I prefer superSU over superuser. It seems to work better Imo.

So try installing 4ext recovery and and then try flashing your rom again.

What rom were you flashing? The stock rom in the tutorial?

I have been reading up on rooting for a while now, and this is the best tutorial I have found. Today, I followed it step-by-step, and my Evo3d is now unlocked and rooted ... just looking around for a good non-Sense ROM now. :D

Anyway, I registered at this site specifically to thank you, jerofld, for the time and effort you put into this walkthrough. You rock! :five:

Assuming you are on the ICS base and have a cdma phone.
SOS-Non sense

Here is a list of some gsm roms. It's all good. No need for the sad face. Someone here will have some good choices for you. In the meantime check out the link I posted!

ROM Manager only works if you're S-OFF.

I've used ROM Manager just fine with S-ON. I've rooted, loaded custom ROM images, and even replaced ROM Manager with TWRP without having S-OFF.

I do understand that flashing some images may require S-OFF, but so far I haven't run into any.

Incidentally, there's tons of info out there about how to switch off security... but how about turning it back on? It's my understanding that having it ON protects your system software configuration against catastrophic changes. After doing whatever is necessary with it OFF, I'd feel more comfortable switching it back on. Is that possible?
