Root [CDMA] Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo 3D ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

stuck on step 4.... when i try to get identifier token nothing happens. just ... three dots. thats all i get

Does your phone say "FASTBOOT USB" on it? If not, you need to get into FASTBOOT mode and connect your USB to the computer.

I'm contemplating downgrading my HBoot, but when I keep reading part about temp bricking that part gets me very nervous, what are chances that a phone could be Perma bricked attempting to downgrade?

Sent From My HTC Evo 3D Using TapaTalk 2

I've never attempted it, I had old school S-OFF. Perma brick isn't likely to happen if you don't read the instructions carefully enough. Take your time and read each step multiple times to make sure you do things 100% and you'll be fine. If you don't pay attention, then you risk perma bricking it.

Just want to thank you for this great guide. First time rooter and had no problems following any of the steps. Even built up enough courage to get s-off with the wire trick! Great info!

I have an Sprint EVO 3D & i did do the Sprint update to ICS.
I then Unlocked it & tried rooting it. It didnt root. I also lost my 4G & WiFi.
Then i relocked it, Ran an RUU for ICS & got it back to stock ICS w my 4G & WiFi working again.
I now want to be able to Root it properly. Or at least do whatever to get Free Tethering & get rid of the unwanted apps.

- Is there anyway to root my phone now that its relocked w ICS on it?

There are several thread at the top of the list right now about rooting OTA ICS. For more details check out some of them.

You should be able to do it. It's really easy if you take the optional step of gaining s-off...
I would suggest the wire trick method. It is easier than it sounds. If you are s-off you can either flash stock Ics rom or run the ruu

If you check a few of the recent threads in the all things root section, there are several threads with more explanation.

I have HBoot-153.0007. and I have unlocked my phone using the HTC method. I have tried this route to routing and after step 5 when I have succesfully flashed the recovery and tried to go into recovery the phone boots back up intead of going into recovery. Is there any explanation for this?

Wow just the other day someone was having the same problem with gsm and said they finally got it following that video. Sorry that didn't work.

Try using 4EXT Recovery

It's a great recovery and uses the touch screen. It's also very nice looking.

Download the app and it will automatically flash the recovery when you select a version. You can do it in app!

I have tried cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img.

I tried to get the zip file in that video but it is no longer available.

yes I saw it here

I will try your suggestion when I get in from work. Ive already looked at the link and doesnt it suggest you need root?

"ROOTED devices only! S-OFF or unlocked bootloader needed."

The above text is from the 4ext page on Google Play. You said you have unlocked your bootloader using HTC Dev. You should be good to go. Just install the app. Have it flash the recovery and then you should be able to flash any rooted rom!

You should be able to flash any rom using 4ext with an unlocked bootloader. If you are up for it though, it might be worth gaining s-off using the wire trick! It's pretty easy if you watch video instructions.

Thanks James, I will try later. My bootloader is definately unlocked, but I have tried some apps like Titanium and they are saying I am not rooted. Do I need to do something else to use them?

The problem is, you are still using the stock operating system. Those apps need super user access. After you get that 4ext recovery set up you will need to flash a rooted rom. If you want to keep stock there are stock roms out there. Basically the stock rom is completely stock in every way except for super user is installed to let you use root functions. I'm probably not the best to explain all of this but I will look for a link to get you a stock rom to flash.

Edit: Actually I have no idea where you are located and am not super familiar with GSM roms. I would hate to link you to an incorrect rom.

After setting up 4ext download CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.ziphttp://download.chainfire.eu/212/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip
Place that on your sd card.
Open 4ext recovery app and click on recovery. Then choose install zip from sd card. Select that zip file that you put on your sd card. Check the options to wipe cache and dalvik cache. Then tell it ok. When it is finished it should restart your phone and your phone should be rooted!!!

Thanks again and I am in the UK so it should be GSM. Ive had the phone since January I think and I thought I only unlocked it at that time and cant for the life remember flashing a ROM but maybe Ive got confused with the ACer Liquid I had before. I relocked it 2 days ago to get the update and thought it was just a matter of un-locking again to be rooted.

No problem!! If you already unlocked your bootloader after the update then you can just follow the steps in my last post. If you haven't you will have to unlock again before following the rest of the instructions.

If you flashed a rooted stock rom it would essentially be the same thing as you flashing super user on your stock device. Basically you are rooting it by flashing super user onto your device. There are many GSM Roms and I am just unfamiliar with which one you would need so I just gave you a link to supersu instead.

That didnt work either. That app told me I am not rooted and do not have busybox installed. Its a bit frustrating as I dont know where to go. Do I need to downgrade my Hboot from 1.49.0018?

Will I still be able to flash a custom rom without recovery installed and phone not rooted?

I'm sorry this is so difficult. I followed the complete Newbie's Guide sticky thread and had no problems. My phone is cdma though.

Are you positive your bootloader is unlocked? You mentioned re locking it to take the update. If you pull your battery put back in and then hold volume down + power does it it say unlocked at the top? I'm not sure what else to do... You should just need to unlock bootloader, flash a recovery, then flash a rom or supersu

Maybe you can post everything you've done in detail step by step? Then I, or someone else, might be able to notice something that might have gone wrong.

My bootloader is definately saying locked. Ive tried so many things that havent worked that Im not even sure where I am up to.
I searched for the correct version stock rom for my phone and flashed that using android tools. The bootloader was then saying -RELOCKED, so I unlocked it using the HTC method. Since then I have been trying to flash a recovery and I have tried over and over, the same ones different ones and I'm getting desperate to get Titanium back so I have access to files I had backed up.

If your bootloader says locked or relocked you will have to follow the steps to unlock it again.

Then after its unlocked you can install 4ext recovery then install supersu.

Your phone won't let you flash anything with a locked bootloader. I suspect that's why you haven't been able to flash a recovery...

Sorry, Ive mistyped and meant to say it is **UNLOCKED**

Were you following the CDMA version of the guide or the GSM Version?

In other words, is this Clockwork Recovery Mod version 4.0.1.4 the recovery you flashed in step 5? Or did you flash the TWRP Recovery?

Also did you make sure you followed every step such as unchecking the fastboot option under menu>settings>power?

Check to see if you unchecked the fast boot option. If you didn't then do that now and try step 5 again and make sure you're flashing the recovery from the GSM Instructions not CDMA.

Also if you are repeating step 5. When you get to step 7 to flash Super User don't use the one in the guide. Use this one CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip that I posted yesterday. I heard that the one in the guide isn't compatible with ICS.

Thanks for your response but relief! I have found one that works -ClockworkMod Recovery Touch 6.0.0.0

Now on to trying SU.

Thanks and I'll post back, but I am more positive now.

Awesome! I'm glad you got it working! Thanks for posting what you used so that others can benefit from this info as well!

Thanks so much! It worked like a charm. I have a quick question. I know that when you're rooted, you're not supposed to take the OTA update. How do I turn off the notification? It keeps the little circle on the top of the screen. I never updated to ICS, so that's the OTA, btw.

I don't know for sure if you can turn it off but there's most likely a way. I usually just tell it I don't want to update and it goes away for a pretty long time before it asks again. I'm curious about this now. If I find that answer I'll post it here. If anyone else knows or finds out please post as well.
