Root [CDMA] EVO 4G downgrade?

well after fighting with sprint about the .12 MAX gbps on 3g... they decided to give me a new phone... should i downgrade to EVO4g? i had that phone before and it was easy to root and i use wireless tether all the time at home. now i have to use easy tether or and use my wife's wifi when she gets home for netflix and stuff... i tried with no luck rooting my EVO 3D, which was a new model on release date. not sure if the new evo 3d's are easier to root or not. what do you think? get a new 3d and then try rooting it? or just go back to the EVO 4G?

They are very easy to root, especially if you get one with Hboot version 1.30 or 1.40, then it is a piece of cake, check my root process link in my signature

I would probably take an evo4g over a 3d with 1.5 hboot... You can still get evo3d's with the older hboots in stores though. You'd have to fire it up and boot to the bootloader screen to tell what it was though. Although if it turns on and you go to phone details and it is still running android 2.3.3 you most likely have the older hboot.

In all honestly though, even though I despise samsung phones as of late I'd probably get an epic touch over an evo4g. They appear to be fantastic phones.

This is a tough call; I had the Evo 4G since release date and rooted it with ease (after root access was obtained when I mistakenly upgraded to Froyo early!). For some reason I really wanted a dual core processor because I was seeing a bit of lag on the newest Sense ROMs so I bought a 3D on eBay. I had a hell of a time rooting it (hboot 1.50), see my thread in this section. I did finally get it rooted though, and I will say it is an improvement over the 4G in the speed department and I like the form factor better.

I will say that there was a period where I was strongly considering reactivating the 4G because I am not satisfied without root access before I was able to do so, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Personally, I probably would not downgrade to the 4G unless I got some money back or something. In all fairness, I am less than impressed with Sprint's 3G speeds and certainly noticed it with my 4G. I can say that I was not getting as slow of speeds as you are, although it seemed like it at times.

Another thing is, and I'm sure you noticed, developer support and custom ROMs are far less with the 3D than with the 4G.

This is the easiest you will find out there,

yes, i have hboot 1.5.... and it sucks! has anyone successfully rooted a 1.5 and made an easy to follow thread?

yeah i got my phone at best buy and it came with hboot 1.4 so it was easy to root. so it will depend on what hboot you have. i also upgraded from my beloved evo. i love my old evo so much so that i still have it. it is just not activated it. but i still can use wifi, download apps and play music.

however, i really love my phone, especially now that i'm rooted. i'm on the clean rom with the stock kernel and i'm getting 18-30 hours of battery life off charge. plus i can overclock to 1700 with no issues what so ever. i'm so glad that i upgraded to this one. i was considering waiting for the galaxy nexus, but my charge port was pooping out on me.

Rooting with 1.5 is a little bit more of a pain but once you get comfortable with it it is not that bad. I came from the 4G as well and the 3d is a better device. Better physical build quality as well as better "innards". The camera still drives me crazy(green oversaturation issue). The camera alone had my eyes wandering to other phones...:-|
And to the person who said the Samsung 4g touch seems to be a good device, just go to that section on this forum and I would beg to differ. They are STILL having GPS issues just like they have been having for the past 4 flagship phones and they are having call issues as well.

Hey flyjbaker, you may want to give the HTC Amaze camera hack a try. A thread is in the main EVO 3D section. There are both apk and zips you can use. I used the zip along with CleanROM and I am perfectly happy :)

I have a friend that has one and his seems pretty much troublefree. I've been with him when he used gps too and it locked right on. He's not a power user though and leaves it turned on all the time. Maybe that's the difference, who knows?

I've played withhis phone enough to realize it's a great device. If I wasn't anti-samsung I'd probably have one.

I have it installed and my first impression is that it does not fix this issue. It may not be as bad but still is overly green. I need more time with it though. Thanks for the heads up.

FWIW I am still using my Evo 4G after my Evo 3D died on me a couple of months ago. I did a factory restore on it after a couple of days and it's been sitting gathering dust. I did root the Evo 3D, but I have not had the time to put a new ROM on it. I am pretty disturbed by what happened, and my Evo 4G has been rock solid and works just fine.
