Root [CDMA] HBOOT 1.5 Firmware Upgrade / RUU Flash / Unbricking Guide

oh man, time go go get s-off! lol I'm SO used to using my macbook that using my husbands Toshiba is driving me NUTS. Its SO SLOW!
 
root checker said it didn't root correctly so i'm trying to unroot and then do it all over again. Getting really frustrated though. I decided to just go ahead and use my husbands Toshi and its not workin right at the moment. I went to do the "adb reboot bootloader" and I keep getting an error saying the device isnt found. I'm really hoping I didn't totally **** my phone up or my husband is gonna kill me!

Er, as part of step 4 that is. I restarted the phone a few times into regular mode as well to see if that would get it to work but no such luck. Any ideas?!? I'm kinda freaked out right now. The last thing I want to do is prove to my husband that I shouldn't have rooted in the first place. lol

Haha. Yes we wouldn't want to prove him right! :p

Okay... I am not the most handy person when it comes to using fastboot as I don't use it often. I am s-off so I really hardly use the computer for anything root related. I usually just download things straight to my phone and do everything from the phone. But you will have to use the computer to unlock the bootloader again.

So the first thing I would do is boot up the phone normally and check your settings to make sure fastboot is disabled/unchecked. Also make sure USB debugging is enabled.

I am assuming you ran the RUU and are completely stock again? That means these settings would need to be changed again.

Then try your adb reboot bootloader command again and see if you get into FASTBOOT USB mode.
 
yeah, I ran the RUU. Could it be a problem with that? I figured I'll throw the zip onto my SD card and try to flash it again. Any chance that would fix it? I already checked to make sure fastboot is unchecked and USB debugging is enabled and no luck =-(

Well unfortunately you can't flash anything right now because the RUU returns your phone to completely stock. This means you have no custom recovery anymore, and you can't install the recovery until the bootloader is unlocked.

The good thing is, is the phone works. Don't worry, you didn't break anything. It is just completely stock now and unrooted, just like the day you bought it. That's what the RUU does to the phone. So it's perfectly fine. You could quit right now and your phone would just be like it was before you even tried rooting.

We need to figure out what's wrong with adb and why it isn't recognizing the phone. You have installed the drivers on his computer and the sdk-tools? And you have extracted sdk-tools to C:\ on the computer?
 
Hmmm... and it sounds like you are running the command from the proper directory... Because otherwise you would be getting a different error message. It really sounds like usb debugging isn't enabled but you already said you verified that it is so I'm getting stumped.

Manually boot into your bootloader. Do a quick battery pull then hold volume down+power. Once there select fastboot by pressing the power button. Then you should see the word FASTBOOT in red letters. Then connect to the PC and it should change to FASTBOOT USB. If so then it should be working and you should be able to run the command to unlock the bootloader. If it doesn't say fastboot usb then the pc isn't recognizing the phone.
 
k, heading to do it now. sadly it's gonna take longer to get my case off than it will to do all that. Damn otterbox! haha
 
Ok it said fastboot usb but it still gives me an error: device not found. i'm gonna try to uncheck and recheck usb debugging and try again incase it got glitched somehow

on second thought, i'm gonna restart the TOshi too just to be on the safe side!

Yes. I know people seem to have a lot more problems rooting from a mac... But yes. Now that you ran the RUU, you are back at square one and can try rooting again. That's really all that's going on in this thread.

It's telling you to unlock again. Flash recovery again. Then root. I will tell you this. To start off and just to get root access, instead of flashing the rom in the tutorial (when you get to that step - no skipping ahead :p) just flash the superSU patch instead.

I just gave instructions for that in another post so I will just quote myself:

If the restart doesn't work I am ALL over that from the 'comfort' and speed of my mac. lol Again, thank you SOOOO much for all your help tonight!:p
 
If you feel more comfortable trying again from the mac I'd say go for it! I have no experience with a mac so I may not be able to answer certain specific questions but can help where possible along the way. Your phone at this point should be ready to try rooting again as if it's the first time. And this time just flash the superSU patch instead of a rom :)

Yeah. took a break for a while and I'm just getting it unlocked now. I assume I can just continue as I did the first time, right? Obviously I'll be installing and running root checker as soon as it finishes up this time. I really hope there wasnt a problem again!
 
Damn, same things again. Root checker is telling me I don't have proper root access after following the directions step by step =-(

Yep! Just follow the steps like last time. Unlock, flash recovery, make a backup, then flash supersu that we talked about earlier. Then run root checker and if you are rooted, make another backup so that if you run into problems flashing anything else, you can restore back to your rooted state.
 
Lovely, yet ANOTHER problem. I went to flash recovery and it came up with "Main Version is older! Update Fail!"

Sorry I'm such a pain in the ass. Kinda wishing I never bothered with all this
