Root [CDMA] Looking for JB ROM Recommendation

ArmageddonX

Android Expert
I am considering Root'ing my Evo3D and going with a JB Rom.

I need it to be fully functional (Camera, Calling, Texting, BT, etc etc) except I do not need WiMax or 3D functionality. (But I don't care if it's included anyway.)

I am on HBOOT 1.58.0000 & I have a CDMA Evo3D with Sprint.

Thank you for any recommendations you can give ;)

~ ArmyX

PS. I'm reading about Rooting, a lot, but If anyone has a good "rooting for dummies" guide I would appreciate that too.

Didn't realize you weren't rooted yet. I will post this here in case you miss it in the other thread. If you root, you should go all the way and get s-off as well!

You mentioned being on hboot 1.58, and I don't think I've seen any JB roms that are compatible.

If you are s-off you can change hboot versions very easily.

I have a thread here with all of the stock hboots ;)

You are correct, someone told me that Dastin was, but I just checked and it is not. ;)

But you can always downgrade

Here is a pic of my details. Totally stock, first generation Evo3D. Got it first day & never root'ed or anything.

I'm pretty computer savvy. Build my own PCs & all that good stuff. When it comes to rooting, I'm totally ignorant. I have been reading about it all week trying to decide if I'm up to this lol

You'll be fine! If you know your way around a computer it will probably make it that much easier to follow directions!

Between me, Don, Scotty & Dragonslayer, I think we have you covered on all bases! You have your own personal root army so to speak :p

The complete newbies guide makes it pretty simple. I would suggest reading through that and then asking any questions you have about it before you start. :D

And remember if you want JB for now you will need to downgrade ;) after rooting

As was mentioned in a previous post, after root you definitely want to s-off, reading about it is more intimidating than actually doing it. And it's the only way to get a JB rom because of the need to downgrade your hboot. Good luck and have fun. :D

So I need to Root, then turn S-Off, then downgrade my Hboot? Correct? Just making sure I have the order of operation correct.

Which method of root should I use? The HTC one?

~ ArmyX

That is correct and don't be overwhelmed we are here

That is the only can you can with your hboot

Now a lot of these I am reading says I have to pick a ROM before I root to use. So does that mean I need to pick a 1.58 GB/ICS ROM, then downgrade my 1.58, and re-flash a JB ROM?

I've been reading this:
http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3...shing-evo-3d-roms-kernels-using-fastboot.html

Edit: ^^^^ Is that guide still good beginning to end?

Edit #2: That Guide does not seem to tell me how to do S-Off, but that's the step after I do step one, which is Root. So one thing at a time I guess.

Edit #3: I downloaded the Mini-SDK but the HTC-Sync doesnt seem to be working so I got the HTCDrivers from XDA. Is that alright?

You only need to pick one if you want a custom rom while in the rooting process.

In the step it says to choose the rom (step one or two I believe), the guide provides you with a link to the custom rom or the super user patch (if you don't want to flash a Rom and want to stay 100% stock).

To go s off, scroll down to the end of the guide. Last 2 steps, one is getting s off, other is getting 4ext Recovery. Both highly recommended.

I never used htc sync when I rooted and it never posed a problem, so you should be alright with drivers only.

I was under the impression there were no HBoot 1.58 JB ROMs so I was assuming I would have to flash a 1.58 ICS ROM, then downgrade my HBoot, and then flash a JB ROM.

All of those steps isn't even required.

You could root and leave it 100% stock (flash su patch)

Gain s off via rooting guide.

Flash hboot 1.50 via Brian's guide.

Choose any rom jb or ics with my rom provided list.

Even still, I think there might be a JB ROM or 2 that 1.58 can run.

The drivers should be okay. Just in case here is HTC sync on my Dropbox.

That guide should still all be good. I like to change a couple things though:
- I would flash 4ext Recovery in place of TWRP.
- When you get to the point of flashing the rom, just flash the SuperSU patch instead: CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip

All this will do is add root to your stock that you are already on. You are supposed to be on rooted stock anyway to do the wire trick for s-off.

Then once you are s-off you can worry about getting your jellybean rom ;)

The s-off instructions mainly come from the unlimited.io site where you will get all the tools, etc. for that! But we don't need to worry about that until you are rooted anyway!!

Alright, so:
1. Root with SU Patch via/RootGuide
2. Gain S-Off via/RootGuide
3. Flash HBoot 1.5 via/BrianGuide
4. Flash Custom JB Rom via/RootGuide

Correct?

BTW, I was pretty confident about everything until I started reading about this "wire-trick" thing lol... Wow...

~ ArmyX

yes...EXCEPT....i WOULD RECOMEND h-BOOT 1.4 OR 1.04 IN LIEU OF 1.5
1.04 IS THE ENG H-BOOT AND has worked on all roms thus far for me...

^^^^didn't mean to ye... Didn't notice caps lock was on!
:(

ALSO - my little bro did the wire strick on his sensation...said it was very easy....

1.04 it is... This "wire-trick" thing is intimidating. I was all ready and set-up to start until I read that step. I'm gonna sleep on it and if I decide to do it I will go buy a single-core wire tomorrow.

Correct!

Also you just reminded me. I was going to find a video for my last post but ended up forgetting. Trying to reply and work :p

The wire trick is not nearly as scary as it sounds! Watch this video, I think it will make you feel a little more confident!
How to Get S-Off on HTC Evo 3D using Wire Trick! – [Juopunutbear S-OFF] | HTC Evo 4G Hacks!

Just make sure when you get to that point that you get the correct download and read/understand all the instructions and follow them and you will be fine!! There's not one person yet, that we haven't gotten through this thing!

The video does not work, but the pictures are good =D Thank you,

Does it need to be a specific type of wire? One guy said single-core insulated and another guy said it doesn't matter.

I ended up using a paperclip because I didn't have sufficient wire. I think you just need a decent guage, something similar to the size of a paperclip. Also use some electrical tape to hold the paperclip if you go that route.

Bummer about the video. It's really good at showing the timing. One thing that wasn't clear to me until I saw that video was the tap and hold.

You tap wait about 2 seconds then tap and hold (don't let off after the second tap, just hold there until you get the next prompt from the software).
