Root [CDMA] root without a computer

I'm a total newb. Attempting to root my EVO 3D from the device itself. Doing this for the sole purpose of removing bloatware and overcloking. I have no chance in hell of ever getting to a computer. The steps provided in doing so are very specific and simple but It's a lot of info to filter through. Totally necessary. Just a few quick questions:

(Please think of me as a typing monkey)

How do I use astro file manager to move the reflash_package.exe to the SD card?

What is rebooting to recovery and how do I do it?

Once I've successfuly installed the file from my SD card how do I know that my phone is rooted?

If I don't care about my contacts or pictures or downloaded apps will it really be necessary to prep the phone in any way before rooting? Stock ROM backup or anything?

What is bricking the device and how do I avoid this?

If my warranty is voided when rooting the phone does that include the $9 monthly insurance that I'm paying on it?

Is there any other precautions I should take or procedures once the phone is rooted?

Thanks for all your help if anyone can. I'm having a hard time tracking down the specifics to these questions.

I think things are a little different on the 3d This is the 4g or OG evo area. Maybe a mod can move this part to the 3d root area.

Also my android software version is 2.3.4. I guess. Am I screwed? Do I have to usr a computer? Remember, I'm stupid...

My bad. I thought the two devices were practically identical. If there's anyway we can link me in the right spot painlessly I would appreciate it.

i moved you to the evo 3d rooting section.

unfortunately you will need a computer to gain root access to your phone. one thing though is that you need to find out what your hboot is. first make sure that fastboot is unchecked. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot. then power off then press and hold power+vol down. thsi will take you to the bootloader screen. if you have hboot 1.5 then you will need to use htc unlocking method. if you have hboot 1.4 or less then you will need to use revolutionary.

please read this thread:

either way you will need a computer for it.

If he is on 2.3.4 the he most likely on HBoot 1.50

Another stupid question, when I'm in settings/apps/ I dont see anything about a fastboot. Only auto launch task manager and unknown sources can be checked. Is it possible that I unchecked it before and its hidden? The only related app I have to this is fast reboot. But as mentioned above if we have the same exact device then ya, probably 1.5 Sorry, I'm really really dumb.

Go to Menu/Settings/Power then you will fast boot there uncheck it

Another thanks. Excellent forum. Very helpful. Not that I get 4G where I live anyway but I do remember reading that I might lose the 4G function if I root. If so, will it even matter once I overclock the processor? Is that Sprint slapping me in the wrist for rooting? Really trying to get faster downloading on different tube site flash players...

I've made a list of everything I would need to download to the pc to make it happen. Please let me know if I'm missing something or I've listed something twice or the wrong way.

Android SDK Gingerbread 2.3
HTC Sync 3.0.5551
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is this sdk?
Su 2.3.6.3
TWRP 2 Recovery
HTC drivers
fastboot/adb

Also, are any of these just apps that go to the device and not what I would download to the pc? Not sure wich ROM to go with. If I should just overclock the phone and not worry about losing 4G but I don't want to lose any capabilities on it. I realize I should just get past the rooting process first but i want to make sure just rooting it won't disable the 4G.
Hope this makes sense.

The Java Runtime Environment is not an SDK. The Android SDK is the SDK :p. The JRE is just a program that allows java applications to run.

I think the su 2.3.6.3 can be on your phone. And to fix the 4G/Wifi issue, you would just install a kernel using FlashGUI. It's pretty easy and straight forward. But getting rooted first is the primary thing.

Thankyou. Any essential apps that I need before or after I root the phone? Or can you post a link to a thread for that? Thanks again.

Ok guys. I've been studying my ass off to get familiar with rooting. My one last question on rooting is how do I go into recovery and do a NANDroid backup once I'm finished with everything? Please a brief explanation or a link. Please.

No, we will keep your thread incase you have any other questions to ask, this way you can post them here, so we can still guide you if need be. ;)

Ok found that. Mods youu can remove this thread now if you want. Seems kind of pointless.

Just one. When I make my first NANDroid back up am i supposed to rename some zip file to PGIMG86.zip? This step is not mentioned on the link I found about making a NANDroid backup. Link: How to create a full backup (Nandroid) of your rooted HTC EVO 3D or 4G

Wouldn't this be a crucial step if I wanted to flash my backup from recovery for any reason? I'm just unclear if this needs to be done or if manually flashing recovery from fastboot/SD card is a different method???

Ok. I just suggested that because it seems like nobody is answering my questions anymore. Maybe they're just too painfully stupid?

Hi! Asking questions is not stupid. Believe me, we have all asked our share :) That's how we learn. In answer to your last question, your recovery will automatically name your nandroid backup. There is no need to change the name of it.

In regards to doing this, is it possible to do the htc boot unlocker with an older 32bit xp computer? I work nights and have had some free time and started on the HTC process but I cannot get past the clicking on the androd.sdk process as it won't work on the computer.

I of course planned to do this this morning but the cable company derailed me when the internet was down all day.

thanks

rob

It should work fine on a 32bit XP comp. The computer doesn't have to be incredible to do the rooting process.

I've noticed people mentioning that OTA updates will unroot your phone. Do these happen automatically? If so how do I stop them so my phone doesn't get unrooted? Can't find the thread for this.
