Root [CDMA] TWRP or CWM?

I have a question.. TWRP or CWM? Which is better? whats the Difference? I have CWM because when I did my HTC Unlock I dont think you could use TWRP at the time and I had to use CWM. Can I switch to TWRP? Any info here would be greatly appreciated as I don't know which I should be using. I read several places that TWRP is better with more features..

If you're unable to load CWM 4.0.1.5 and are still on CWM 4.0.1.4, then TWRP is definitely the way to go. CWM 4.0.1.4 cannot charge while power is off. That right there would be a dealbreaker for me, and should be a concern for anyone else.

However, if the newest version is available and you're doing a comparison, I like CWM a slight bit better. TWRP didn't clear out my batt stats properly. I don't know if that's only my unit or other people see it as well. But it's organized a little better and is more noob-friendly, IMO. Except if you select the wrong thing. Sometimes it doesn't let you back out. Like I forgot to wipe my dalvik one time, and had already selected to flash a zip from SD card, I couldn't exit back to the menu to wipe dalvik. I never liked that about TWRP. But, like I said, it is organized a little better and is customizable, to a degree. And the customized way of doing backups is neat.

CWM does everything it needs to do, does it well, just is not organized in a way that you would expect.
 
The latest version of cwm is perfectly fine...especially if you are used to it. If anything, the cwm folks have been continuously modifying their product and I think the .05 version works great. Anyway, have used them for over a year and never a problem.
 
How do we upgrade to the .5 version, through ROM manager or do we have to flash the IMG a different way ??

Yep, I used ROM Manager. I don't really use ROM Manager for anything else but it sure makes it easy to keep your cwm up to date. Your very first choice when opening the app is "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery". ANd below it it should display your current version of recovery in small print. At the top you will see ROM Manager 4.3.3.0...just realize that is only the version of ROM Manager and has absolutely nothing to do with the version of recovery you are running or are about to flash. A lot of people used to get confused about that.
 
I though so, but I assume since I didn't flash the original recovery through Rom Manager, then that is most likely why it does not mention what version I am on, I know it is the .4 version as I booted into recovery to verify.

Wonder if there is anyway to get the font larger in recovery, that font size is small in CWM

twrp FTW!


CWM sucks... I wont get into why... But I will list just a couple reasons why I like twrp....


1. This is the most important for me... (im a rapid flasher) It has a check box to aut reboot on completion of flash. I dont have to baby sit the ROMS I am building. One automated step that saves me alot of time.

2. It has themes.

3. Its by teamwin

Thats all for now. Like I said I have personal angst with the developers of CWM.

I had an issue where a NANDroid made with TWRP 1.0.0 could not be restored with TWRP 1.0.2. I'm chalking it up to new-release glitches, so in the meantime, I'm using CWM.

I do prefer the extra functionality of TWRP, though I can also understand that CWM is extremely portable between devices because they don't go too crazy with adding new features.
 
Okay so i read all of your replies. Can we get to a bottom line on this?

I am new to rooting and have used neither CWM or TWRP at this point in time.

It sounds to me like TWRP may be a bit easier to start out using... But from what a couple of people have said it has crapped out on them when updating...

NANDroid backups are extremely important so if they stop working im going to be screwed...

The back up issue the mod referred to was due to incremental changes in the recovery itself. Kinda like if you upgrade from XP to Win7 you may a glitch with your backed up files not being compatible (best example I can think of, sorry). Now that they are on 1.0.3 and have not changed for weeks this point is 100% mute.

twrp is easier to use (user friendly), has more functionality and you can change the way it looks...

What more can I say, I am fanboy of teamwin and I never heard of them until the 3D.
 
I like twrp and cwm about the same although I wish there was a way to not wipe my ext4 partition with a data wipe
 
A lot of people prefer CWM because they can use ROM Manager with it. When I rooted and flashed on my Optimus S you couldn't use ROM Manager, you had to manually go into recovery and flash everything manually regardless of what you used. I got accustomed to that and it is good to know because if you don't and can't get to your screen for some reason you still know how to get to recovery. Imho if you are going to root and mod your phone you also need to be familiar with adb so you can access your device when all else fails and the experts here are trying to help :) In short, while some may think TWRP is not as convenient I personally prefer it because it is very stable and you aren't as prone to getting lazy ;)
 
+1 ^^^ I will give you devils advocate, it will most likely be something like, when you are accustomed to using something you simply do not like change. That would be the easiest way for me to describe it, in his case I believe since he has never used either one, then I would say use TWRP. With that being said I prefer CWM only and I say only because I have used it for a couple of years and I am use to using it, period. I have never used the RM app to do anything other than update or flash a recovery, I whole heartily agree you need to boot into recovery without the app, as that will avoid issues down the road. Simply my 2 cents ;)

I went with twrp because it seemed like the main devs were pushing it and I want to run what is going to be supported in the years to come from the beginning.

I did make a cwm backup as soon as I got rooted and then I switched to twrp and did the same before I made any changes to anything. This way I have an unmodified backup in both so I should be covered no matter what.
 
Yep smart move, what I use to do when I use to switch back and forth between RA and CWM in the HERO days

I used twrp when it was first released and ran into a few problems. I liked twrp a lot, but decided I'd stick with cwm until all the bugs were worked out.

Sounds like it is more stable now, so it might be time to switch back.

Lol how many people know how to make change without looking at the cash register or when you give them the extra penny to make it even?! You would not believe how many times I have been in line paying in cash and the person is thrown off because I paid something like $12. 01 for something that cost $11. 96 and got the deer in the headlights look ;)
 
I noticed that CWM release a new recovery 5.0.0.0 has anyone tried it yet ??
