Choosing the right memory card

Yes, a copy will be absolutely fine, I just wanted to advise against formatting the old card before you copied the old files or maybe ditching it all together.

About the new HTC sync giving troubles with XP but not with Vista (and viceversa) if you are intrested you can read the thread in this very forum (using the Hero as a modem).
Strange as it may seem it looks like we decadent europeans are affected by this bug while the land of the free is strangely immune.

Am i reading the above right?.
That i do not have to copy anything from my supplied HTC Card.
I can just get on and install a new card with out any problems.

Why does it seem so strange?
The first afternoon I had the Hero I did'nt even put the card in coz I had'nt noticed it in the box.
I don't know if you got a user manual with your Hero, but we europeans did'nt.
HTC did'nt give us one single printed post-it wih it, everything is on that two miserable GB card in PDF form; so I'm gonna copy those files on my new card, anyway, if you don't I'm sure your life (or your Hero) are not gonna be much affected.

They are already for sale (at ridicoulous prices) in the far east and they will soon make it to Europe too, soon to be followed by 64GB units.
In the meantime ,if you really need all this space you can always connect an external hard disk via mini USB, I have spotted someone umbelivably small and portable, very colorful and sexy and with 160 (and maybe 320?) gigs of real (or virtual?) estate.
For that kind of prices though I would prefer to buy one of those new pico projectors that will soon (surely before Xmas) hit the old continent.
16 gigs is plenty for my needs: I have'nt got so much porn anyway.

Well, i don't think om going to carry around a external HD, with a hero. That kind of defeats the point haha. If i feel im fine with a 16 card, then well, ill be happy. But if i need more space, i'll get the zune HD.
But i really want an all in one device.:cool:

Keep in mind that's *minimum* data transfer rate. One review blog has shown a Sandisk class 2 16gb card to run at speeds in excess of 12mb/s.
 
I will be getting a Class 6 card, i suppose you have to root the phone to run widgets and apps of it?
And also do you have to do anything to make the phone faster with a class 6 card, or is it speedier as soon as you put the card in?

It's "speedier" straight out of the box, in that read/writes to the card are obviously faster, so you may well notice the difference when watching video for example.

Oh ok. So like a movie or music i put on the card will start up quicker.
But I presume the home screen isnt smoother unless you root the phone and put the widgets on the card?

My personal experience: music playback (160kbps WMV and 320kbps MP3) was fine on a Class 4 card but some video was prone to occasional stutter. Using the Class 6 card everything I throw at the Hero plays smooth as silk.

I think it's fair to say that running too many active widgets (weather, other ones that poll regularly) on the home screen will sap performance, regardless of where they are installed to.

I went hunting for cards today (I would prefer to buy it in a brick and mortar store) but the onlly SanDisk 16 and 8 gigs I could find were all Class 2 cards.
The prices are the same as those listed on the webz for class 6 cards.
Should I keep on hunting and avoid the rip off, or a SanDisk class 2 16GB is good enough?
What's the bleedin' difference?
Transfer speed? Bragging rights? What?
 
The class corresponds to the minimum transfer speed - 2 for 2mb/s, 4 for 4mb/s etc. However, in practice the cards will go faster than that, it can vary. I read a little tech blog (can't remember where I found it, probably on this forum) where the guy tested a class 2 Sandisk 16gb and found it performed very well indeed - in the region of 12-15mb/s.

The one most important is if you are rooted with apps2SD then you want the fastest Class6.

If you Take lots of pic you want the fastest as well ... SDcard are/were principally developed for camera ... and the important part is write speed, not read speed

Size is and issue based on how much you plan to store .. music, photos, videos ... in these case SIZE does matter...

So buy the Fastest class 6 then in the size that works fro your use and pocket $$$

Today at least I've learned something I can use.
Now I also want to check what class is the card in my DSLR (it's still the one Canon put in the box) which is probably more important than the one I put in the Hero with wich I have taken exactly 3 pics in two weeks one of which I immediatly erased.

Please allow me to ask you one more thing :
While I rarely use the Hero to take pics, I take quite a few of them with my other cell phone which is a Nokia N97, with a very good camera (for a phone) and a capacious 32GB of storage to which I added an 8GB (don't know what class) card.
Since (as you kindly explained to me) the writing speed is specially important when taking pics, should I set the phone to store the pics by default to the phone's mass storage or , to obtain the best possible results a class 6 card is better in any case?
