Root ClockworkMod Recovery [For Motorola Triumph]

Status
Not open for further replies.
I think I must have missed something. I downloaded the CWM recovery file. I followed all the instructions, I booted holding both volumes and power. But then the instructions kind of end abruptly.

I'm led to believe the root was successful if I enter the CWM boot mod screen, but then am I supposed to do something?

I rebooted, downloaded titanium backup and the app says it cannot get root access. So I'm not sure the root worked. Any ideas?

did you use gingerbreak to root?

as I'm scanning through this thread it seems there are some additional instructions not mentioned in the video or accompanying text.

I formatted system, data and cache using the CWM boot mod. I did not see one called "dalvik cache".

then I tried to install the update, but it says it can't open the folder. I figure that's because it's looking for a zip not an image file. so I copied the zip file on there (confused because the instructions said to copy that restore image onto the phone and overwrite the old one). Then when I try to have the CWM boot mod install from the zip on SD card it says "installing update, installation aborted".

Now when I reboot I just get a Motorola logo. I can get into the CWM boot mod no problem, but the phone itself won't load.

Where did I go wrong here? Followed instructions > got a boot mod, but all apps requiring root say I'm not rooted. Followed additional instructions and was unable to complete.

well it appears all I did was install the boot mod on there. I was under the impression this would root the phone. evidently it's just the first step...

not sure what I should do next.

note to anyone else trying to root their phone. That video has nothing to do with rooting. I followed those instructions and now my phone won't boot.

I found this: How To Root Motorola Triumph With GingerBreak [Guide]

It looks like what I should have done.

Now I somehow need to figure out how to restore with this "CWM boot mod" thing. It seems this wasn't even needed to root the phone. But now it's the only thing working on my phone.

Can anyone tell me what I can do with the CWM boot mod to make my phone boot back up? Then I'll try this gingerbreak path.

can the CWM boot mod work with a .apk file?

Right now the phone won't boot. I can only load the CWM boot mod, I followed the instructions about formatting several things, then I tried to install a .zip file and it failed.

any help is much appreciated.

what zip file did you try to install?

well first I formatted 'system, data and cache' (was also supposed to format 'dalvik cache' but it wasn't there.

Then I tried to restore using cwm-recovery-fb0-v2

I also tried to use the stock recovery, it was supposed to have this "Stock_Triumph_1980-01-06.00.00.34", but it's just a zip file with the recovery image in it. When the zip is loaded on the SD card it isn't seen as an installable zip, it's a winrar archive instead of a winrar zip archive.

so basically I formatted everything, and then tried to install the cwm-recovery-fb0-v2 file and it failed.

first off, that video never claimed anything to do with rooting, only on how to install the custom recovery. you can't flash that stock_triumph rom as a zip. in barnito's instructions -

Extract that zip to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup on the sd and look for mounts in CWM. First format system, data, cache, and dalvik cache, then under the recovery options select the Stock_Triumph_1980-01-06.00.00.34 folder, and it will restore a never powered on backup of the stock rom.

you missed that part. you need to extract the folder in the zip

yeah, I realize now that video and the CWM in general probably wasn't needed. I thought I was doing something that would root the phone, definite mistake on my part.

definitely confused about how to install anything with the CWM. I don't have that directory to extract to. If I create the directory and then place the stock recovery folder in there, it's still just that restore image. when I navigate to that folder CWM says "no files found".

what command under restore should initiate this? when I go under backup/restore my options are:

reboot
appy sdcard:update.zip
wife data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
install zip from sdcard
backup and restore (redundant)
mounts and storage
advanced

the only option that looks viable is "install zip from sdcard", which is highly confusing, because I extracted the zip, and it contains an image file.

*edit (sorry for overposting guys, I'll try and edit instead of multiple posting). should I do this: http://www.coderah.com/?p=356
I have a machine with Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, so I think it might work. But the phone was already activated, so if I flash it back to as if it were new from the factory, I'm a bit worried about reconnecting with Virgin Mobile

no you don't have a framework loop problem. you wiped everything and don't have any rom to load. you need to flash what's in the stock triumph 7z file. you can't extract anything or open the 7z file with clockwork. you need to load that sdcard or another sdcard with the files from the 7z file.

feeling a bit stupid now. Thanks so much for your help, esp. on a sat. night.
I was messing with the completely wrong zip file...

I've now got the Nandroid file with the 4 images and md5 file, not entirely sure what to do with it. I tried to install from zip with it, and no luck, what is the 7z file you speak of?

*I tried just the zip file, and I tried extracting the file* no luck either way. When I navigate to the extracted folder it says "couldn't open directory, no files found".

ok in recovery go to backup/restore then select restore, then select the folder where those 4 images are.

edit: first you need to open up that nandroid zip file and extract the folder

i don't know what you mean the zip contains only one img file, it contains 4 different img files and 1 md5 file

The instructions are pretty simple....

100% stock Nandroid Backup

CWM 4.0.1.4 Triumph

Stock Recovery

make sure you install the CWM by going into fastboot (vol - and power on) Hook up usb, then drop the recovery.img in the folder on the MOBILE drive.

Extract "Stock Triumph 1980 01 06.00.00.34.7z" to /clockworkmod/backup/ on the sd. Boot into CWM and look for mounts. First format system, data, cache, and under advanced wipe dalvik cache, then select "backup and restore" and under the "restore" options select the Stock_Triumph_1980-01-06.00.00.34 folder, and it will restore a never powered on backup of the stock rom.

it does sound simple, but instead of "format dalvik cache" I've got "wipe dalvik cache". And when i extract, am I supposed to create the directory "sdcard", because I don't see it on the SD card. Or am I supposed to put it on the phone itself by holding down-volume and power? I don't see a "sdcard" directory there either.

whether I place that nandroid folder on the phone or the Sd card and navigate to it I just get an error message.

put it on your sdcard under /clockworkmod/backup/. and it's common sense, format means wiping :P

Depending on the file manager you use (I use root explorer) some will show how linux mounts the sdcard as a folder off /, which it does. Making the active folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ or /clockworkmod/backup/ on the sd card. Sorry for the misunderstanding...

you're right, it is common sense, but I'm trying to follow directions to the letter. It looks like it finally clicked. I created that exact folder, and extracted the zip file while it was actually on the SD card, then when I went to restore it didn't have me navigating through folders, it actually showed the zip file name and gave "restore" as an option. Then it looks like it did it's magic.

Thanks so much guys, this CWM boot mod thing is seriously powerful. I'm back from the grave now. sorry for all my blowing up this thread, hopefully my mistakes can help others avoid the same pitfalls.

Android System Info app by Electric Sheep (IIRC) also shows that info and quite a bit more as well and at times it's handier than using a terminal emulator or adb shell...

I don't have time to work on anything this week. It's summer session finals week, but I am going to send in the Triumph to be included in ROM Manager.

If Koush approves my configs, he'll add the Triumph CWM port to ROM Manager.
