yeah, I realize now that video and the CWM in general probably wasn't needed. I thought I was doing something that would root the phone, definite mistake on my part.
definitely confused about how to install anything with the CWM. I don't have that directory to extract to. If I create the directory and then place the stock recovery folder in there, it's still just that restore image. when I navigate to that folder CWM says "no files found".
what command under restore should initiate this? when I go under backup/restore my options are:
reboot
appy sdcard:update.zip
wife data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
install zip from sdcard
backup and restore (redundant)
mounts and storage
advanced
the only option that looks viable is "install zip from sdcard", which is highly confusing, because I extracted the zip, and it contains an image file.
*edit (sorry for overposting guys, I'll try and edit instead of multiple posting). should I do this:

I have a machine with Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, so I think it might work. But the phone was already activated, so if I flash it back to as if it were new from the factory, I'm a bit worried about reconnecting with Virgin Mobile
