Root ClockWorkMod

Ok, this is going to turn into a big rage-fest real quick once everyone reads this stuff. I'm not even going to dignify any of this except for bobloadmire, dont appologize on my behalf for me again. While I am grateful for the support we are getting I dont have anything to be sorry for in regards to what I previously said. There's no need to start getting all ad hominem abusive on people here for their opinions.

Who's being abusive?

I just rooted my 2nd lg optimus elite using you'r one click-method! Took me literally 5 minutes to do everything from downloading minstro and the libraries to down loading superuser to get root axis. Thanks again Hashtag!

When the donation page was initially set up, the going rate was $149.99. Add in wepay's fees plus taxes and you have around $165. I wasn't about to do an exact calculation.

Now for my slightly aggravated response to all of this nonsense:

Lucky for all you kids, I just picked up the Elite for around $135 from a Boost/Virgin retailer (which was 25 miles away, so 50 miles round-trip or about $9 in gas). So $144.

The rest of the money (after the wepay donations got transferred) was out of my own pocket. If I didn't genuinely love doing what I do, I would not have spent a god damn dime on this phone.

I guess my point is this: stop whining. I am volunteering my time and resources to break open this phone and all I'm hearing is whining about the fact that the "target" of $165 doesn't exactly match the price that you can get at (choose a retailer/source). You all are extremely lucky that I'm even attempting to do this.

Oh yeah, one more thing: I have a full-time working job as a manager at a local IT services start-up. I don't have time to be on here every damn day.

I wholeheartedly appreciate and agree with your perspective and reasoning. And here I thought I was irritated by some of these posts!

I think it's safe to say that you otherwise have little personal stake or need in having a custom recovery for this particular phone.

Thank you for sticking it out with this BS. Take your time.

I'm not made of money, but I'm certainly willing to chip in even more to make up the remainder.

Thanks again,
KTB

Thanks, good to know I wasn't the only one! :)

That's pretty much hitting the nail right on the head. Before whoever contacted me on AndroidCentral (sorry I forgot who you are lol) did so, I had zero intention whatsoever of doing anything with the Optimus Elite, especially the VM edition of it (I'm on Sprint so having a Virgin device doesn't do anything for me in the phone department).

Literally the only reason I am even bothering with this device (especially given it's locked-down state) is because I want to help the community as a whole. I believe everyone should have the freedom to do what they wish with their devices, even if that happens to be hacking the living hell out of them.

well let me ask you this. now that you have the device in hand and i assume have tinkered with it some. what are your general impressions? meaning in its speed, overall design, etc? i think the back is the worst feature of the phone. very thin plastic with the nfc antenna attached right to it. you could break the back on the elite by sneezing on it lol. i think the device functions nicely as long as the service is working correctly. also in comparison to the Optimus V,its missing the camera button but did notice in stock recovery that the menu key on front is mapped for those functions.

I agree on all counts. I think having the NFC antenna integrated into the back cover was a very silly design decision. In fact that's one of the first things I noticed when I unboxed it and took the cover off to put the battery in. Saw "Do not scratch or damage this area as NFC antenna inside" and went WTF?!

Couple more things I'd like to note. First off, the front of this thing (from a distance) bears an uncanny resemblance to the iPhone 3G/3GS. I was actually just at 7-11 using Google Wallet and the attendant goes "Is that an iPhone?"

Second, the LCD panel is decent, but the touchscreen digitizer seems extremely laggy (the Sprint version seemed way less laggy, is there a possible hardware difference?). But for the super low price, I can't really complain.

As far as service reception goes, I don't have Virgin so I can't really give any thoughts on that.

EDIT: The lack of a dedicated camera button is more of a minor (okay, major) annoyance but it was still also a very silly design decision.

i agree it does look like a mock iphone of sorts. the laggy response could be due to needing to adjust the pointer thingamabob...you know the thing lol...i dont know what its called lol. but you take your finger and center the touch sensor. my reception issues are mainly localized and due to a ton of upgrades in area that have effected me for close to three months. thought the device was defective until vm sent a slider to me and it behaved the same way. then i realized it was network issues. the reception is strong..high bar gain even when i cant connect. it receives well.

Hmm, interesting.

So let's begin with (a) I'm rooted now.

Figured out the fastboot mechanism and it does work. I think someone previously stated that fastboot could not be achieved with ZV5; it can.

EDIT: I also backed up the stock recovery before I did that, and fastboot does indeed flash it back on correctly.

Let's hope LG/Virgin honors manufacturer's warranties, because I might be bricked already.

Someone mentioned using QPST to unbrick, but I can't find the post anymore. Anyone have any info on this?

yeah its a few pages back in forums. didn't work for me but booting into plain recovery and then trying jcase root flash did. I was hung in boot loop with vm animation earlier and it worked from recovery. avoid doing anything in recovery except booting to it if you can. ill dig up link to the other boot loop fixes...hang on.

Just got off the phone with vm not 5 minutes ago! My wife's elite's volume buttons quit(no insurance) so to answer your question "yes" vm is sending me a replacement . The 1 year manufacture warranty covers anything but lost or stolen.

I know a lot of people like this design because ealier NFC designs were integrated into the battery and this made for less NFC range and also expensive battery replacements. So thats why they integrate it in the cover, which for most purposes is not a big deal.

That's good to hear because not even an hour ago I realized mine had quit too. They were working fine this morning no clue why they would have stopped.

Yea, that was me. My first attempt to zero out the recovery partition after the update didn't work for whatever reason. I have since gotten back into Fastboot.

As for the flimsy back with NFC, this phone is best with a case IMO. And I still find it difficult to believe that the screen protector is gorilla glass, but that's what the phone rep. and marketing materials stated.

nice to see Drew working on this "because he can" Please setup a donations page or thread if yyou get the custom recovery working.
