Root CM 7.10 Questions

Hello all,

I'm kind of a cm7 noob. I'm running 7.1.0 with Timat kernel 2.6.38.8 (heard it would give me good battery life) and amon_ra recovery. I've been thinking about switching back to a sense based rom and I need some suggestions (fast, new, fully functional). I don't know what that means for the kernel I have... if I need to change it.

Also, I've had rom manager premium from the moment I rooted. It just prompted me about an update to my rom... should I select update? Is there anything I need to do before I update? I've read rom manager isn't the greatest idea.

Thanks for your consideration

do not use rom manager first of all. it tends to be very buggy and just does not wipe very well. and since you have rom manager you most likely have clockwork mod 3 or higher. clockwork mod 3 or higher can't flash certain flashable files. it uses a script called edify while most other zips use amend. only clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3 and trwp are compatible with both types of scripts. go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. there is a section about switching recoveries. once switched please read the flashing section. it has instructions on how to flash a rom.

as far as sense roms go, i would recommend mikg2.56. it has some sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built into the rom. it is very smooth and extremely fast in my opinion. just make a nandroid backup, wipe data, dalvik cache, and cache and flash the rom.

Do others share this opinion? I've had no issues flashing via RomManager, but perhaps I need to reevaluate.

Thanks for the opinions,
AarJohn

well i have been on this forum for a while now and i have seen the issues come up from it. if you are not having any issues with it that is fine, but i have seen more issues come up here. also i like amon ra 2.3 better then clockwork mod 3 or higher. you also cannot flash certain zip file as well. clockwork mod 3 and higher only supports edify scripting while most files use amend. only clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3 and trwp recoveries have support for both.

yeah, your mileage may vary, but Ocn is one of the main ones in here who helps people get their stuff straight. His opinion has a lot of experience to back it up. :D

I've got Amon ra 2.3; the only thing I ever used rom manager for was to switch to amon from clockwork... seems to have worked perfect. That said, do I need to worry about my kernel before I start flashing roms again?

You don't have to update the kernel, especially if you are leaving that rom behind anyway. Are you going to make a nand backup of that one before you head off?

Edit: More explanation is in order, I guess. The new rom is going to have it's own kernel anyway, and you might decide to keep the one that comes stock or put a custom sense kernel in to it.

You cannot use Tiamat on a Sense ROM you will need A Sense Kernel like Freedom. You can find kernels on the Kernels Sticky. As far as ROM Manager I prefer to use the recovery directly. I think this is the best way to install a new ROM or Kernal. Never have used ROM Manager but have seen several post where people come in here and have had nothing but problems.

Every time you flash a rom it will overwrite the kernel. Most sense based roms will have the stock sense kernel that non rooted phones have. And for aosp roms they all basically come with the stock cyanogen kernel.

And +1 to mikg 2.56. It should be the stock rom for the Evo. It's wonderful.

Earlier I read something about a new Synergy version + God mode. In August I was using a version of Synergy and was happy with it. I have never tried a Mikg rom though (I'm definitely willing). How do you think they compare?

I've tried both and enjoyed synergy, but kept getting some lag and I've always ended back on mikG no matter what I've flashed..

Its my gold standard of what every other ROM gets compared to.

i am a huge fan of mik as a devolper. his roms are always top notch. i used to like myn ( the dev behind synergy) with his myn's warm 2.2 froyo, but i soon realized how much slower warm 2.2 was when i flashed mikfroyo. mik's foryo rom was super fast. and the same goes for the gingerbread roms. mikg is so fast and i love mik3d as well. gonna flash the his supersonic3d this weekend.

Supersonic 3D is what I'm running now, and I'm really liking it. Not as smooth as MikG but still plenty smooth. According to battery monitor widget, it's sipping even less battery when sleeping, which is kind of surprising so far. It would be nice to have working 4G, but it's pretty nice as it is. Can't wait for a more optimized version.
