Root CM7 Auto Brightness *Possible Fix

So I was sitting out side for lunch today as we had a company picnic. I was messing around the settings for the Auto Brightness because I couldn't see my screen. It seems to take maybe 1 to 1 1/2 seconds to respond which is much better than before from the lock screen. So here is the settings I have configured using g60-final

System Settings < Display < Brightness < Check mark Automatic Brightness

Then

System Settings < CyanogenMod settings < Display < Automatic backlight < Check mark "Enabled"

For what ever reason it seems to be working as good as GB 2.3.4 or even Froyo for that matter. I don't know if this has been posted before but thought I would share.

im going to try this out today lol, also, does anyone know where the actual sensor or whatever thats detecting the light is located

cause for me as well it tends to only take 1-2 seconds to adjust, but sometimes whenever it seems like its just not adjusting or not picking up the difference, if i flip the phone over and allow the rear camera/flash area to be in the direct sunlight for 1-2 seconds and when i flip it back its adjusted

but since i cant look at both sides at once, it could just be coincidence, and it could just be actually noticing the difference as im flipping it lol

When I was playing with the brightness values to use in cm9, I was trying to locate where the light sensor was. I found that it was somewhere near/in the ear speakers area towards the right edge of that area (when looking at the phone of course). I didn't pinpoint exactly where before I got bored...

thx, its just my curiousness lol

cause as i was reading i was thinking it would be a good idea if it had a sensor on the back as well, cause usually with the sun above you and you looking down at the phone theres a chance of a shadow being cast right over the screen, but as long as the sensor could see ambient lighting or the radient light then it should work anyway

If you look at the phone in the right light like sunlight you'll see two blue dots beside the A in Motorola at the speaker. I believe those are the sensors.

Just as an update, I've been inside and outside a bunch today after enabling that second option, I always keep the display on auto, after enabling cyanogenmods auto brightness as well and I've noticed a big difference, seems to adjust pretty fast

So what advantages does auto have? I mean cant you just put it on a certain brightness? Outside this phone is kinda hard to see regardless, right? Does it help the battery or something to have it on auto?

Oh how odd. Every time I first install a new version of a ROM (CM7) or whatnot, I always turn on the Cyanogemod Light sensor filter option. I think this is probably why I never thought the automatic backlight was problem. I compared the speeds with and without the option on. It's about 1 or 2 seconds longer to adjust without the CM setting option.

Yup, this works, I posted about it, in your CM7 thread, about a month ago. You can also change the sample interval to 0.5 seconds instead of 1 second to make it respond a lil quicker.

Battery life and convenience are the top reasons, yes you can set ur phones brightness but then its always that brightness, auto uses a sensor in the phone to adjust screen brightness depending on outside lighting, as for it being hard to see outside, its always kinda hard to see when outside but when the phone adjusts under the auto its alot easier, for me atleast lol

Hahaha, i think the way i ask questions sometimes makes me sound pretty dumb. I know how the sensors work and all that, i was just wondering about the advantages. The thing i dont like about auto is how dark it is inside. But hey, if it helps the battery maybe i can learn to like it. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Ok i tried these settings and for some reason the screen wont go off. I have it set to go off after 1 min. I just looked down and noticed it hasn't gone off. Is there something im missing here?

Edit #2: So i guess a reboot helped...I should try more things before i ask questions huh?

I didn't think it was dumb lol but technically the screen setting itself insteada lets say 50% brightness constantly should save battery

As for screen shut off, that's under the plain old display listed as screen timeout I believe, I think by default its 1min

If it's too dark inside, at a given ambient light level, just tweak the individual brightness levels under [edit other levels...]
And yes, the backlight is THE biggest battery draw on the device. makes much more difference than under clocking/under volting.

You might need to add or delete the number of levels to get the settings to stick. Thangfish and I have had that problem before. The adjust number of levels is at the bottom of the levels list.
