Root Cm7?

Zumaki

Android Enthusiast
Tried it out, but when it booted I had no phone app or contacts app. Also most of the settings menus didn't do anything, just dropped me to home screen. What did I do wrong?

you also need to flash the gapps (google apps) file. that way you will have gmail and the market and such. you can grab it in the rom/kernel stciky.

Was that a part of the update instructions I missed or am I just a bit behind on custom ROMs?

looks like they changed the thread the last time i visted it. with all of cm roms you need to flash gapps. i guessed that they just assumed everyone knows now.

Okay, here's what I did: went to recovery, backed up, cleared cache/dalvik, flashed CM7, installed gapps, booted. Still no phone app that i can find. And no lock screen?

edit: also tried rebooting, re-installing gapps, still no phone, contacts, gmail, etc. I've messed up somewhere.

ok it is cm7.1 that you have then. try re-downloading the file and re-flash it, it could be a bad flash or a bad download. and also wipe like 3x data, cache, and dalvik cache.

theres also a superwipe around in that sticky too i believe.... when going from a sense based rom to an aosp (android open source project) rom, you really hafta remove all traces of the old rom, and in many cases you must also repeat that removal process several times b4 flashing the new rom. Kinda weird, i know.. but ive run into this exact problem b4... and cyanogenmod.com also has their software avaialble for direct download instead of going thru a mirror of some sort. thats where i get my cm7 zips from :) good luck, and let us know how this turns out!

Are you using clockwork or Amon RA? Amon's the better recovery. Never had a wiping issue doing it just once in conjunction with Calkulin's format all zip file.

oh i have... went from esIII (wanted to update my prl LoL) back to cm7 and i used caulkins zip file, didnt work with 1 wipe, nor 2... i ended up manually wiping the caches 3 times and then ran vipers superwipe 3 times cuz i was pissed and didnt wanna be in recovery even 1 more time lol i guess i was following the "measure 14,763 times, cut once" philosophy

Well, I'll give it one more go later today. I have clockwork recovery (because that's what came with unrEVOked root) and I'd rather avoid too much tinkering under the hood right now. Going to a non-stock ROM is already pushing it for me since I don't have a lot of time lately to tinker.

Went to cyanogenmod.com, picked up 7.0.something (latest stable version) and I'll try doing 3 or so wipes of each type before flashing it. The gapps zip I got from the sticky might be an issue too, because when I was installing it, the progress bar goes like 25% then it says its done. Just seems to finish a little too fast. I dunno... I'll post an update when I try again this afternoon.

Some zips just do that. They'll go along like everything is normal, then boom!!! They're somehow magically done. So that's not necessarily a worry. But id really suggest getting amon_ra. Yeah its kinda tinkering but its flashing one more zip file that'll eliminate many headaches in the future and you'll find that the general concensus here is that its superior (vastly) to clockwork.

Dunno if it's because i haven't switched to amon ra, but I tried 7.0.something (latest stable one) and still had no google apps. Tried flashing google apps zip and still got nothin. Having a phone with no phone app sucks.

I really want to like CM7 but maaaaaaaaaan... I'm doin it wrong I guess.

It really does sound like you're hitting a wall here. Do you have an aversion to doing a factory reset? If you're afraid of losing text messages, there's sms backup/restore and titanium backup has batch operations in the paid version that allows for multi app backup and restoring to facilitate that process. But all you should need to do is wipe the snot outta your device, flash cm7, flash gapps, cross your fingers, perhaps pray(if that's your thing), reboot and revel in the pure awesomeness that is cyanogenmod:) but, I can't agree more with the +1 to amon ra thing man. I've been using it since like day 3 of being rooted and haven't ever even wanted to look back. So, in that process I laid out, include flashing the pc36img file at the beginning of that list and go to town! My only word of advice with the pc36img thing is to avoid accidentally renaming it pc36img.zip.zip apparently some folks get caught in that redundancy loop. And I think the file for amon you'll need is in the rooting for dummies guide. Let us know if it works or not, and if not please give us a step by step of whatcha did so we can determine what part (if any) needs modification. Don't give up if you want cm7 as badly as it seems like you do. As you can tell, I'm also a fan LOL despite the fact that I'm currently on kings hybrid ROM. I had to check out the new wares. Oh, btw, is keep a nand of a sense ROM on your SD card too cuz you can't do prl stuff in an aosp rom... Oddly... K, I'm shutting up now. Too much mountain dew today...

ok so what i just realized is that you are flashing cm7 and gapps in the same recovery session. i would recommend that you flash cm7, boot, flash gapps, then again boot.

not sure if that is the reason, but that is the order i do when i flash cm7.

Tried both ways, got nothin.

I don't want to do a factory restore because i don't know what that's going to do to root/boot etc, and right now the only 'bad' thing going on is my phone won't let me have CM7 with gapps.

what recovery are you on? i would recommend that you have amon ra2.3 (like doofus suggested). also lets start from scratch and wipe the heck out of it. wipe data, dalvik cache and cache 3x. you can also use vr superwipe (it is in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky), but you will need to have either clockwork mod 2.6 or amon ra 2.3 to flash it.

once all that is done then flash cm7, boot, flash gapps, boot.
