Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

Once you S-off. When you go to flash a rom, you will first backup your original then wipe it [cache/dalvik/factory reset/system] in your custom recovery before flashing a new rom

Hello guys I have a problem, on step 4 after I put in the fastboot oem get identifier token, the cmd says " waiting for device" an it nevers shows the token. Anyone can explain why its doing this?

So does the previous step work OK?

"adb reboot bootloader"

If that actually causes your phone to reboot into the bootloader, then I think we can assume you have the right drivers, and that HTC Sync isn't interfering, but I can't be sure 100%. You'll have to wait for someone else to confirm this, or you can conrim for yourself that in fact, HTC Sync is NOT still on there. You only want the drivers that it installs. You can uninstall HTC Sync while leaving the drivers behind.

I'll also assume that you are in the SDK folder on the command prompt and that you've unzipped the files correctly.

Do you have usb debugging enabled in the phone settings? The waiting for device error definitely means it's not recognizing the phone for one reason or another. Do you have a spare cable you can use to test?

Also are you on windows 8 or do you have usb 3.0?

A week ago, I bought my HTC EVO V 4G. Today I unlocked it, installed the TWRP recovery, and JMZ's stock rooted ROM.
Everything went smooth! Thank you all for the great tutorial and posts!
I haven't done s-off yet, but I will probably do it eventually, no rush.
For now, I wanted the root, so i can use some apps that require it.

Great thread. Got my "new" Evo V rooted in less time than I'd thought. Directions seemed way more complicated than they actually were to execute. The video helped a LOT.
Just wanted to say thanks.

Guide worked well for me too. I have not tried S-Off yet but thinking about it. The video really put me at ease before I tried it it. Was not bad at all. Thanks for putting this all up.

Just want to note for the benefit of the OP that this guide is out-of-date. I confirmed with fuses at unlimited.io today that rooting now needs to happen after the wire trick for S-OFF and not before with the current version of the controlbear utility. Since the OP of this thread directs the user to the unlimited.io website for the JuopunutBear download and instructions, the sequence of the steps in this guide needs to be updated, at least for those users planning to use the wire trick to gain S-OFF.

Guess I wont be doing that now lol.

can i still root my phone if i downloaded the md5 file for the recovery and the odex???

I'm not sure that I understand your question, the md5 is just a check sum for a file so that you can verify it wasn't corrupted. And the odex file doesn't have any bearing on your rooting efforts. Please explain in detail exactly what you're trying to accomplish and we'll be more than happy to help you find joy. :D

check your sdk tools folder and make sure the recovery is not showing "recovery.zip.zip" if you have enabled show extension of known file types.
it should be "recovery.zip" so rename it.

if show extension of known file types is not enabled, it should be named "recovery" not "recovery.zip"

does this not work with windows 8? because i upgraded yesterday and i have to root and s-off again and now whenever i try to adb reboot bootloader it says device not found

Hi All,

First, I want to thank you all for taking the effort in putting the steps together. Today, I bought the Boost Mobile HTC EVO V 4G phone. I followed the steps and everything went fine till I hit a roadblock in Step 5. Basically, my phone is not going into recovery mode. It is stuck on a white screen with HTC logo similar to the one at 3:45 in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiJbwe9eM-Q

Below is the output of the steps.
c:\sdk-tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
< waiting for device >
sending 'recovery' (5132 KB)... OKAY [ 4.683s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 2.467s]
finished. total time: 7.152s

c:\sdk-tools>fastboot boot recovery.img
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY [ 4.644s]
booting... OKAY [ 0.003s]
finished. total time: 4.647s

ANY HELP WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED..

Apologies for the repeat post. But, I desperately need some help here.

The output you posted looks good and I'm not sure why your recovery isn't booting successfully, but the file might be corrupted so I would try downloading and flashing a different recovery.img.

Here's a current version of 4EXT recovery. Try flashing and booting that using the same commands. Make sure the 4EXT file is renamed to recovery.img or substitute the full name if that's easier.

I just downloaded the file and again followed the same steps. However, it is still stuck on the HTC logo. I know that my phone is unlocked. This is a Boost mobile. Does that matter? I don't mind doing the process again. Is there anything else that I could do to troubleshoot?

Have you tried booting recovery directly from the bootloader?

ramjet73

I think you mean selecting "Recovery" option after starting the phone and pressing both the Power button and Volume. Yes, I have done that too with no luck :(
Yes, that's what I meant.

If the recovery shows as flashing successfully but you can't boot it you may have a hardware problem.

About the only thing left to try is flashing the RUU to see if that resets whatever is causing the booting problem. You can find the Evo V version here.

Thanks for the suggestion. My attempt at flashing the RUU has been unsuccessful. Attached are some of the screenshots that might help you in guiding me in the process. The mobile is booting appropriately normally. So, I am not sure whether it is a hardware problem. This is a new Boost Mobile phone. Since flashing the RUU file is specific to Sprint, the problem could be with the flash file. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. I am working on this since last night.
