Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

If I wanted to JUST root and not flash anything (for now), and I wanted to use CWM as my recovery, what would the process look like? Something like this?

1: download HTC Sync / mini-sdk; install.
2: open CMD / navigate to sdk.
3: turn off fastboot / turn on debugging
4: plug in phone / go into bootloader / flash unlock code

This is where I get stuck; I'm not using an img for my recovery, I was planning on doing it through the CWM app. So would I just reboot at this point, install the app, then install CWM recovery and backup as usual?
 
What app are you talking about?

Usually You would need to get the recovery.img for CWM and flash it through fastboot. You would then need to flash superuser or SuperSU in the CWM recovery that you just installed.

According to CWM's site, you can just do it via the ROM Manager app. I honestly can't remember how I got CWM onto my last few devices, so who knows if this is how I did it before. I'll find the .img I guess.


EDIT: Nevermind, I got the unlock bootloader working. Looks like all is well and I can move on. :)
 
Okay, so I'm unlocked and now I'm stuck.

I put the CWM recovery img in the sdk folder and put the superuser zip on the SD card. But when I try to flash the recovery img, it says "error: cannot load recovery.img", and when I try to download it via the CWM app it says I don't have the right permissions.

I'm guessing this means I need to deal with superuser first, but without CWM I'm not sure how to flash the zip?

Can somebody get me past this please?
 
You can't flash superuser without a custom recovery. :(

What commands did you use to flash the recovery.

Also did you have the extensions enabled to make sure it wasn't saved as recovery.img.img?

Ah, yeah, that was the problem. derp. There were some DLLs nearby that were showing their extensions, so I assumed I needed the extension, but looking more closely I didn't. It was just the DLLs. :P I should be good now.
 
is there anything special that needs to be done before flashing a new recovery? i currently have 4ext but wanna switch back to twrp..keep getting an error though when i fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

edit..okay afte doing some googleing i think i need to send a command to erase my current recovery img before i try and fastboot flash the new one...maybe?

edit2..figured it out with the help of a few other helpful users..anyone wanting to switch from 4ext to a twrp recovery can do so by downloading goo manager from the market which will flash a twrp2 recovery image to your phone for you..easy as that
 
So if I used the recovery option in goo manager that would got to twrp2 or is there something else that has to be downloaded?
 
My head is spinning...:eek: I only want to root the phone. I want the phone stock with VM and HTC software, only with root access. No rom or kernal, if possible. So where in that guide does the rooting process actually take place and finish? A ctrl-f of the op only turns up 4 instances of the term "root". None of which say that basically say "Ok, in this step you are going to root your device blah blah blah"
This is a supposodly complete newbie guide after all. I think that most 100% newbies would agree with this.
 
from the HTC Dev page - for unlocking - which device do we select for EVO V on Virgin Mobile? Is it the EVO 3D sprint? Or Other supported Devices?

Once you unlock, flash recovery, and flash superuser zip. You are done

If i just want root access and recovery options will i still be able to keep my apps and data following the guide to do this?
 
On step 4, the instructions to get to USB debugging are wrong.
"Next, go to Settings > Applications > Development and check USB Debugging"

That's funny that everyone read that and knew what was meant.
 
Can we revert the phone back to factory settings? Eg locked bootloader?

I know with my old Droid 2 I'd just flash an image and call it good. Is there any similar method with this phone?
 
It's a good guide I guess but... I think I'll be stopping here on my modifications.
This phone has exceeded my knowledge. This isn't easy to follow at all.

Is there a video out there or a less complicated walk through with less clutter?

I am going to just remain happily stock and locked, As well as not being rooted for now.

I took it for granted how easy it was on the Triumph, Ascend and even the Optimus V....
I haven't modified a phone in over a year. I'm starting to think that I'm out of the loop for good...

Root is much easier than the guide makes it look. It took all of 5 minutes (seriously). It's not nearly as scary as it appears. It took me longer to root my OV, though, when I did it, we had to do it all manually.

S-off on the other hand....
I can totally understand wanting to wait on that.

I am having problems with the mini SDK.

For some reason I keep getting encountering this problem.

EDIT: You have to move all the contents of the file up one level. That way there isn't another folder to open and all the contents are available on the first level.

The HTC Dev site requires you to have no anti-malware/anti-virus/firewall/pop up blocker/etc be running. If they are, You won't be able to get the pop that allow you to put in your token.
I used IE, Put it on minumum settings, Disabled Windows defender/Firewall. I ended up having to uninstall my Anti-Virus and reboot my computer even.

If it says "Your current security setting put your computer at risk" in IE, Don't worry.
I had to have it say this to get that site to work.

"The unlock token should reboot the phone for you (so that you'll be back in Android). If it doesn't you can do it manually by reinserting the battery and then holding Vol down + power. You should now see UNLOCKED displayed at the top. If so, congratulations, you are now unlocked!"
After putting in the token it will show you two options. Yes and No. Use your up volume button to select Yes, Then press the power button and the phone will reboot.

That about summed up any difficulties I had. =] I'm now deciding on a ROM...

Ok I am already rooted. But I want to make a video tutorial on how to root this phone. Can I do this all over again without having to go to stock and unroot first?

The link worked for me, but I recently changed the topic of the Evo 3D topic. So I just adjusted it to make sure it worked. I also put the note about the anti-virus blocking HTC dev. Thanks :)
 
I just got a htc evo v phone the other day. I tried using the wifi hotspot but it keeps coming up a error, says to contact the carrier. I have read a thread where I can use a wifi app but the phone has to be booted. Also, I would like to back up my apps and stuff with titaminum backup. I am looking into rooting my phone, I am a noobie when it comes to this stuff.

So, I take it, this is what I need to root then, unlock, flash a custom recovery, then flash superuser through recovery. Is there a step by step guide that I can follow to do these processes. I have been known to screw things up without a step by step guide. I would hate to brick my new phone.

I am trying to root my htc evo v. I am on ICS with Bootloader 1.57. I am a little confused after reading these threads. I take it, I have to unlock it first, how exactly do I do that?? Then I have to install a recovery then?? I was looking into 4ext but thats not free on the market. So, after I unlock, I just download 4ext from the market then, thats it for flashing recovery? What is this, that Im reading about the htc drivers?? How do I get them and how do I go about installing them? Now this thread also talks about flashing superuser, does that mean just downloading from the market then?? Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

There are instructions behind the "show" tags in the first post of this thread, so if this is short please refer to them for more info.

You need to have the Android SDK or the mini-sdk setup (the mini-sdk is easier and is linked in the first post). Make sure you have the HTC drivers, you can use the HTC sync ones (also linked in OP).

Then you need to unlock the bootloader using HTCdev.com. There are instructions on the site and under "Unlocking with HTC Dev" in the OP. After that is unlocked you need to flash the recovery you want to use through fastboot ("Let's install then boot into recovery!" in OP). You need to download the recovery.img you want to use (there are different options, so that is up to you).

Then I would make a nandroid backup. I know you have done that before with your triumph, but even if you choose 4EXT or TWRP as the recovery the steps are pretty similar.

Then you need to flash some sort of superuser binaries (Superuser or SuperSU) in recovery. This will root the phone.
